Baker Boy the Winner of the $200 Sweepstakes, and Fred Tyler and Mate the Team Race. Two trotting events came off yesterday afternoon at the Prospect. Park Fair Grounds, the announce- ment of which drew.together about two hundred persons, First on’ the’ list-was a sweepstakes of $200, mile heats, best tlirée in five, in harness; the entries being Mike Rogers’ bay gelding Baker Boy, L. S. Sammis’ bay gelding George Gillett, Wiiliam Thoms’ bay gelding Slippery Dick, aud H.W. Howe’s bay mare Sarah Jane. In the pools, before the start, Baker Boy had the call even against the fleid, They got away at the fourth attempt, and from the word “go” it was evident that Baker Boy could not win the heat, as be went into the airon the turn and repeated this unseemly behavior balf a dozen times. Sarah Jane won the heat by alength, Siip- . Dick oping in second, but was placed third cause of running. Ker Boy was last, four lengtns in the rear. After the leat Slippery Dick and sarah Jane soid at even sums iu the Poois, the others at much lower rates. Dick went of with the lead, but Baker Boy caught him on the turn, and at the quarter was ten lengths in ad- vance, At the hall this advantage wus increased to twenty lengths, and at this point it was appar- ent that Baker Boy could shut out all his contest- ants, but, going into the air at the three-quarter pole and again on the stretch, the others aude Saved their distance. Slippery Dick was secoud, Gillett third and Sarah Jane last. Before the third heat Baker Boy was dropped in the pools and Sarah Jane was bought jor the choice. SPRINGFIELD, Mass., August 25, 1373, The Fall meeting of the Hampden Park Associa- tion was virtually brought to a successful close to-day. The extra race for green horses will be to- morrow morning, but the two closing races of the meeting were finished this afternoon. The weather was very fine, the track in periect condi- tion, and from twelve to filteen thousand people present, The race for herses that have never beaten 2:29 was won by St. James in the first, third and fifth heats. The second beat was won by Brother Jon- eS and the fourth by Lady Banker. James Reynolds has a young mare by the Craw- ford horse, dain by Witherell, aud a chestnut mare by ane Clay, both of whom are threatened with speed, REAPPEARANCE OF THE HORSE DISEASE POUGUKESPSIZ, August 25, 1878, ‘The horse disease has made its appearance here, Fourteen of the City Raliroad car-horses are down with it and the Superintendent bas hard work to run the street cars regularly. Some of the livery stables have also eick horses. The epidemic seems to be confined entirely to the throat, and almost immediately after being attacked the horse be- comes very Weak and debilitated. As yet but one horse has died, Immediate and careful nursin: generally saves them. 1 saw four horses in one lot this morning who were so sick that they could not hold their heads up, and their limbs were tottering and weak. ARREST OF AN ALLEGED HORSE THIEF. Aman giving his name as Daniel Mack arrived in Trenton early yesterday marning with a valuable horse, and put up immediately at @ livery stable after making inquiries from a police officer as to the best place to stop, In consequence of the early hour of the morning (it being but five o’clock) at which he arrived, the suspicions of the Marshal were aroused as to the legal ownership of the equine; and, after hearing the story of the police ofMicer, the former gave orders to have the horse detained until inquiries could be made, Early in the day a despateh was received from Bristol, Pa., announcing that @ horse bad been stolen, which pueaennes tly proved to be the one in the possession of Mack, In the afternoon three men came from Bristol who are members of the Newpontville, Pa., Vigilance Cominittee, and irom them was learne that Mack was in the employ of Mr. Arthur Sanders, of Bensalem township, near Bristol, and that on ‘Sunday evening he suddenly disappeared with the animal in question. A reward of $100 was offered’ for the arrest of the thief and the recovery of the horse., Marshal ‘tyrrell received ‘one. half of that sum, and the horse was delivered to the three pur- sners. The thief took his exit soon after leaving the stclen property at the livery stable, and has not been seen since.
