6 NEW YORK THRTY-£IGHT YEARS AGO, THE HERALD RECORD of Mr. Bennett at That Period. si te Rie: iows From the baie oe Republican, Au- | ‘This bas all been brought about by the movetyent + Yesterday we “discoorsed” a little in a desultory ‘Way on metropolitan journalism in the year ’35, taking as a text a few venerable New Yor« HERALDS of that year, which, by lucky chance, had “eacaped the paper mill. In the editorial and ag, vertising columns of thege Gueer little shees8 we get some curious giimpaes of the inetropolis itself, aa it presents itself to the restless, obscrvant eyes of the young James Gordon Bennett, ‘The population, as nearly as we can figure it out, Ws somewhere in the neighborhood of two hundred and filty thousand; five years ago, in 1830, it was 202,589, There is still a good deal of nervousness and four thousand citizens in ’32, and nearly one thousand last year. We are all happily uncon- ‘million dollars’ worth of property. ‘Trade has fairly started on its northward march. An indigvant taxpayer writes to thé HmRaLp to complain that Broadway, ‘the pride of New York— May, of America—the promenade of thirty years,” 4s being choked up and spoiled. Hecalls upon the Mayor to “enforce the law, and remove the fruit Btulls, the furniture, the empty go-carts, handbav- wows, fine the con! &c.” Editor Bennett comments as follows :— of t hi t observed that Broadway 1s moving up town From ot Pauls down to ‘Trinity both jes of Broadway fora: only an extension of Wall stroot; it is equally as 1uil of business. A few years ago it wi mere promenade. Now no fine youn; seen below Fulton strect, unless she for.a new house o aeradle tor her boy. y Street “There the falr show off to great advantage. This same Astor House, by the way, is now near: weady for the roof, and the editor has no hesitatio: 4n pronouncing it a splendid structure. Mr. Astor, he hears, advances $50,000 to Boyden by way of furnishing the house; receives $15,000 rent the first year, $18,000 the second and $21,000 the third, and attends to the letting of the stores himself. It 4s hoped that Stetson, of the Boston Tremont, will come on and lend a hand in getting the new enter- prise fairly laanched, The editor is confident that The 8: his hote) will “make the Park and vicinity a vast pics of public intercourse.” His head is level here, at all events. The city is crowded just now with Southern and Western merchants, who have come on Jor goods, and who daily call at the HERALD office and order tbe paper sent to them by mai!—a thing unprece- dented In the history of any penny paper,’ proudly remarks Mr. Bennett. One of these rural tradesmen has a grievanc We can hardly get trom the steamboat to our boardin; house without being beset by some half dozen impuden fellows drumming with such questions a8 these :—"Fine ay, sir;” “Just rom the West?” “Suppose you come to buy'goods?” “Can carry your go Hiitie fess than on any other lines” “We are insured ;” “All the others are foi responsible,” with other questions, and then a pre- sentation of a card and an invitation to some house of ill fame or to the theatre. Partly in consequence of this unusual influx of Visitors, perhaps, the fashionable hote& and board- ang houses have just raised their prices all around, & proceeding that has given rise to no little popu- lar dissatisfaction and newspaper criticism. ‘The HERALD learns that the “restorateurs’’ (sic) are protiting by the rapacity of the more pretentious tablishments. “Persons take their furnished dgings, have their breakfasts sent to them from @lestorateur, and dine and tea at them, all for about baif the price now charged by taverns, Even rivate families are beginning tosend to the resto- ateurs for their meals.” The livery and boarding Btabie keepers have also raised their prices, the re- Bult being that hundreds of gentlemen have sold their horses out of the city and that club stables gre multiplying on all sides, “A horse well kept at a club stable, including the care ofa gig, sulky or tulbury, will not cost exceeding $12 a month,” the HERALD thinks, If business ts ere just at present, the town it- fe ig rather dull. To be sure, there was a shock- ig Murder on Friday night at a sailors’ boarding jouse, Which makes @ “stickful” in this (Monday) gmorning’s HEKALD. There was aleo a fire in a car- mter’s shop, Dear Broadway, Sunday afternoon, which two men lost their lives, but the HERALD fannot learn their names. Although the first Btrect railroad will not be built tor several years te the Bowery rougiis, we notice, are already at he little games for which they are hereafter to be- ome co iamous; Mr. Brown was knocked down by two of them last Wednesday evening and relieved fa valuable breastpin and $23 in money. We earn, too, that the comet can now be seen with the help of a very powertul telescope, aud a month hence will be visible to the naked eye. But, gener- Diy speaking, the local intelligence is not of a very Xciting quality. In the way of amusements we ave Mr. and Mrs, Wood at the Park Theatre in ppera; English comedy at the Franklin (‘boxes filty cents, pit twenty-five, no colored persons ad- mitted”); Mr. Sutton, the ventriloquist, at the erican Museum; the living ourang-outang ‘(nearest Lae to the human of any Known Animal,” and the great living anaconda serpent Sa a docile,” “can be handied by the most id,” ‘ied with a living fowl at twelve o'clock er Monday ang Thursda, ™) at Peale's Museam ; . Take that for November 30, 1835, forexample. There is no “materia! news” on the French question, hir. Bennett tells us, but the spec- Blators laugh at the notion ofa war, and he isn’t sure but they are half right. The only stock in which there 1s a upward movement is that of the United States Bank, which institution is getting ted to “die with case and dignity on the 4tn of rch next,” The government surplus funds in the city aggregate $10,000,000, The concentration (such @ sum iu the hands of ome set ofmen Mr, enuett regards a8 a menace to the community; Indeed he believes that the “recent speculations id teas, brandies, &c., have actually grown out of a maguitlcent project to apply the iamous system of ‘cornering? to articles of merchandise,” Fiour, fuel and ail provisions may be expected to immediately advance. The sales of real estate during the Week have been “immense,” and at higher prices than ever. The quotations include twenty-five Btocks, all told—-six banks, five insurance com- nies, Seven railroad companies (the Patterson, joston and Providence, New Jersey, Boston and Worcester, Utica, Long Island, and Camden and Amboy), two canals, two gas companies, two trust vompanics, and the ‘Farmers’ loan.” The most indefatigable advertisers, thirty-eight ieeth ag0,, were the patent medicine people and be ‘‘specialists;” in these old HERALDS they oc- cupy niore room than all the others put together, The ‘‘wanis,” which have since become such a aiure in the HERALD, already begin to crop out, ut are scattered about among the larger adver- Lisements, The same may be 8: of “to let” and Aboard.” “Pergonals,”? also, igin é pear, though not under that name. Thus, “a young entieman {rom a West India island, who, having 0 female acquaintance in this city, takes this method of becoming so with some young ay (not above twenty-four years of age), who els & disposition to become united, and has an Income AF Lo N18 Own, of from $2,500 to $4,000,” Bdvertises fora wile. Buiidlog lots are offered for Bale, We notice, a8 far up town as Ninety-iourth Btreet. Mr. Foster calls attention at some length and with much eloquence to the advantages ot his commercial school. Twenty banks put in an ap- arance, ten lines of foreign packets (including e Texas one), iour rellroad companies (the Bos+ ton and Providence announces that it is uow run- ing three trains each way daily), and three steam- aut lines. “xcellent post coaches,” we observe, “are always in readiness on the arrival of the boat t New Haven to couvey passengers to Mortford, vidence and Hosion.” Turning Ing yesterday was five; clearing, three, tly, we Botice that the declaration of principles of the American Auti-slavery Society appears as a paid ad- Vertisement. It is printed in very tine type, ana takes up more than hali a column's space. Among the names at the bottom we find those of Arthur and Lewis Tappan, Join Rankin, Wiliam Jay, Elizur Wright, Jr. and Joshua Leavitt. MSETING OF THE BOARD OF HEALTH. The regular meeting of the Board of Health was field yesterday. No business of importance was @one, save the reading of a report by Dr. De F. Day, the Sanitary Superintendent, in reference to the removing of night soll, The report went to show that gross negligence was manifested on the part of the scavengers who perform the work, they manifesting a total disregard for the ordinances ‘wating toeir work, 2 je inquiry into the reported ‘The Doctor also mad nuisance of scavenger carts collecting in front of houses, &¢., and jound the nuisance to exist to a greater ex than had been supposed. These are the questions which are agitated by the press, That he will be the nominee of the republican party there can be no doubt.
