10 SARATOGA RACES. "Third Day of the Sec- ond Meeting. ‘A Large but Unenthusiastic THREE INTERESTING RACRS, Mr. Belmont’s Countess the Winner of the Two- Year-Old Stakes, Mr. Crouse’s Satire of the Mile and a Furlong Purse for Three- Year-Olds, and Hubbard of the Two Mile and Three-Quarter Dash, Which isthe Best Time on Record. .. SARATOGA, August 9, 1878. Bright skies and a bracing breeze this morning ushered in the third day of the second meeting, | a and the consequence was a !arge attendance at ahe course. At the pool rooms the excitement, early in the morning was fully as great as th, which prevailed on Thursday last over the Kerner, Stakes. The hubbub this time was over the nrg¢ Face of the day—the sweepstakes for t ¢o-yea: olds; and I assure you the pool gejer b aq bis hands full The pool r00\%m was xo crowded that it was with the ur most aiMculty that a passage way cori be mad , jrom the outer door to the outs de circle of seats, ‘where the horsemen and others who W ere de- sirousof making large for’nes on very © nail capl- tal were huddled toget!,er in a perspirin’ mass, The horses had a most excellent & cack to run ‘on. Three evens were on the ¢# cq, the first veing a sweepstakes for two-year-old 3, three-quar- Wers of a mile; the second, a mile av 4 gn eighth by “ehree-year-‘yids, and the third, ada jn of two miles and thfte, quarters. For t@ sweepstakes for two-y¢ ar.ojds there were twenty-four nominations, oO! V nich number six came to the post. She won the wace with the gre atest ease, King Pin second, Mc- Daniels colt thit/ |, Countess is a very plain bay ‘hy, with black, points, a little over fifteen hands. ‘This'makes the fifth stakes that Mr. Belmont’s two- year-olds have won out of eight during the present season, The’ winners were Beatrice (twice), King APadeus (PFice), Steel Eyes (once) and Countess (to-day).
