BUFFALO, August 6, 1873, There were 20,000 persons on the course to-day, and the private equipages turned out in much greater numbers than yesterday—the carriages being gathered in dense masses, extending nearly hall-a-mile in length, As usual at the meetings here, there was a large percentage of ladies, many of them in elaborate toilets and very beautiful. ‘The day was as fine as could be wished—the sky cloudless, the air balmy, with a fresh breeze blow- tng from the Niagara, and the landscape bright and green, melting into a soft haze m the distance, a THE 2:21 RACE, ‘The first event of the day was the: purse of $20,000, ior horses that had never trotted better than 2:21, mile heats, best three in five, in harness ; $10,000 to the first, $5,000 to the second, $3,000 to the third and $2,000 to the fourth horse. Irving’s bay gelding Jim Irv- ing, Benjamin Mace’s bay gelding Sensation, Dan Mace’s chestnut gelding Jadge Fullerton, Alden Goldsmith’s bay gelding Gloster, ©. 8. Green's chestnut mare Lucille Golddust and A. E, Brown’s bay gelding Derby. The two last named were withdrawn. In the pools Judge Fullerton brought $100, Jim Irving $30 and the field $20, First Heat.—Irving had the pole. He and Sensa- tion got off on even terms, but both horses broke badly and soon gave Camors the lead. Fullerton regained his feet first and passed the quarter-pole neck and neck with Camors, Gloster a length and a half, and Sensation eight lengths behind. Time, 34% seconds, Camors then took the lead and came steadily away, passing the half-mile in 1:09%, and leaving Fullerton, with Gloster third and trotting gamely. They maintained pretty equal positions to the three-quarter-pole, where Gloster took second place. Coming home the horses were straining every muscle, and Fullerton getting the whip well laid on, while Camors trotted squarely and surely in the lead, with Gloster close following, and amid a defeaning thunder of applause, Camors crossed the score, with Gloster’s nose at his wheel, Fuller- ton half @ jength behind Glostey and Sensation seven lengths to the rear. National Championship Sweepstakes for the Lorillard Badge—Six Contestants Postponement on Account of Darkness— Bach Shoots at Twenty-eight Birds— Brown end Hudson Ahead. SaRatoea, N. Y., August 6, 1873, The National Championship Pigeon Shooting Bweepstakes for the first acquisition of the magnificent national champion badge, Presented by Mr. Louis L. Lorillard, of New York, was commenced to-day at Glen Mitchell, but not finished. The rules under which this badge shall be shot for are such that as often as once in three months the holder can be challenged, and the stakes are to be $500 a side, All the matches for the badge are to be shot according to the English rules, which have been slightly modified,.at fifty birds each, frem five traps, placed five yards apart, thirty yards rise and eighty yards boundary. Both barrels are allowed to be used, and the amount of shot must not exceed one ounce and a quarter. These are the general conditions tor the champion- ship matches; but to make the first contest for the badge, an event of more than usual interest @ grand national sepeminomanto sweepstakes wus arranged by the donor, the Soncinians being $100 entrance, play or ‘pay, half of which is to be added to tne? badge and the other half to go to the second best contestant. For this money and the trophy the subscribers were to shoot at forty birds each, under the rales, save that the birds were to be furnished on the usual terms for the shooters, There were six entries for the event, these being Harvey A. Brown, of Cleveland, Ohio; Captain A. H; Bogardus, of Elkhardt, Il.; Abe Kleinman, of Cricago, mL; Ira A. Paine, of New York; Miles Jonnson, of’ Yardville, N. J.; T. H. Turrell, of Chicago, l)., and a Mr. "Hudson, of Syracuse, N. Y., who, with the consent of the contestants, was per- mitted to take the place of E. Garrison, of the same place. From this list Miles Johnson was allowed to withdraw in consequence of tiiness, In the pools before the work began Paine was the favorite, Kleinman the second choice, Bogar- dus third, with the others selling as a field. When twenty-eight birds had been shot by each darkness came on and the shooting was postponed until to- morrow morning. The assemblage to witness the event was large and the utmost interest was evinced in the result. The three noted shots, Who were at first the favorices, were beaten from the commencement of the sport, and long be- fore the postponement was announced Brown and Hudson had the caliinthe betting, with Kleinman, Bogardus and Paine selling in the fleld, as the three latter were then two birds behind, and Brown and Hudson even at that time.
