On board were several refractory sailors—among them Jacob Metland, who has since become a murderer. He ‘was not-a man who would rob the merchant or make a wanton assault upon a stranger. But he ‘was kwown among his companions as an energetic, combustible and highly excitable individual, whose ANGER WHEN AROUSED knew-no bounds. The captain of the vessel knew this, and ne skilfully avolded a collision with him. The mardships, real or imaginary, which the crew had been compelled to undergo, gave rise to muti- nous growls;.but on reaching the harbor the gail- ore thought it best to desert. The mas- ter of the vessel informed the Russian Consul, and the latter bad the case brought before United States Commissioner Shields, of this city. The lat- ter, perceiving the grave nature of the case, issued 8 warrant for the arrest of the RINGLEADER OF THE DESERTERS, whose name is Pritz. The warrant was placed in the +hands of Mr. John E. It is stated that the Khivan expeditionary force under command of General Kaufmann will return to Tashkend about the middle of August, TERRIBLE MINING DISASTER. Sr. Lours, Mo., July 11, 1873, A terrible accident occurred at ten o'clock this morning in the fire clay mines of Parker, Russell & Co., about five miles from this city, by which three miners were “killed and several wounded. One hundred and fifty men worked in the mine at the depth of 160 feet. A special despatch from Minneapolis says :—“The proceedings in the Gordon case at Fort Garry have developed new facts, which materially change the complexion of afnirs. To add to the disgrace of the city there isina corner of the Governor’s Room a glass case, about ten feet high. In this glass cage there are seven or eight flags with the magical names of Cherobusco, Molino del Rey, Garita de Belen, Buena Vista, Contreras and Vera Cruz emblazoned on the rag- ged siiken folds. Mr. Judson Jarvis sent a messenger with him to see Under Sheriff Joel Stevens. This gentleman was sitting in a chair, and on being spoken to at once told his story. He said that he had seized the property in the Governor’s Room to satisfy a iegal debt, Sheriff Stevens said :— “I Lave three men in the Governor’s Room and they have levied on the property there.” Sheriff produced somte twenty judgments against the clty, which had been en to the Court of Appeais by Comptroller Green. “What is the amount included in those judg- preety against Comptroller Green?’ the reporter asked. “Well, I suppose,” said Mr. Stevens, ‘that it amounts to over sixty thousand dollars, [ have a lot of fre engines, the property o1 the city, in my possession now, and [shall hold them until Mr. Ureen pays his just debts.
