An outrage of the most diabolical nature was perpetrated between eight and nine o’clock last evening at, Lincoln Park, the details of which are Peculiarly atrocious and more flendish in their Rature than any crime, perpetrated in Chicago for slong time, The perpetrator, thanks to the vigi- ance of the police of the North division, is in cus- fody, and at the present writing, there is strong ope that the victim will recover. The particulars af theoutrageous assault will be found below. __ MRS. CAROLINE GUNGER, fhe woman who now lies helpless upon the couch that may prove her deathbedpis 4 German, thirty- two years of age, and resides with her husband at ” they street, Yesterday afternoon Mrs, ‘Gunger paid a visit to her mother, on the corner of Reuven street and Chicago uvenue, and remained wntilatter supper, At about eight o’ciock in the evening she started for her north side home, and et Canal street met a man in 4 buggy, who TALKED LIKR A GENTLEMAN, nd inquired in Kind words where she was-goit Mrs. Gunger frankly told the map where she lived, and stated that she was on her way home. He in- formed the woman that he was gomg that way himself; that it was a long walk, aud that, if she desired, she couid ride with him, The woman did mot suspect that the man who made this kind Ofer was other than a gentleman, and, innocently believing that no harm could result, she accepted the offer, and was assisted into the buggy by the table driver. The man drove rapidly, but did not take the woman directly to her home as he had j pro! ‘To her inguiries he MADE EVASIVE ANSWERS, and headed his horse toward Lincoin Park. Mrs. Gunger did not even then suspect that the motives of the man were villanous, but supposed that he had some business in that direction and would soon carry her to Whitney street. But when the Park was reached, without, appareutly, a soul ‘Within hearing distance, and the horse was stopped, A PEELING OF FEAR took possession of her, and with trembling voice she asked the man why he had brought her to that Jonely place at such an extraordinary hour, His answer confirmed her worst suspictons, and filed her with consternation and alarm. His base in- g@uits not only took the form of words, but actions ‘Were suited to them. Drawing a BRIGHT-BLADED KNIFR, ‘the monster informed Mrs, Gunger that unless she acquiesced to his demands he would butcher her on the spot. The brave woman is not one of the ‘ind to be easily intimidated when honor is at Stake. The first intimation she received of the Villain’s intentions, and instantly after the threat ‘was made, she jumped from the buggy-and at- awempted to make her escape by fight. Her perse- id after her, and before she had run a ! SEIZED HER BY THE HAIR Pulling out several handfuls, and effectually stop- ing her progress. He then knocked her down with fist and made a second attempt to accomplish purpose. The woman who had innocently erred pe accepting the advances-of a stranger proved to e a lioness when the hour of danger came. She resisted with all her strength, and her piercing ‘acreams for help were heard a long distance from the scene.of the encounter. During the struggle ‘the fiend USED HIS KNIFE with merciless fury, and attempted to destroy the Ufe of the woman he had failed. to rob of her vir- tue. During the entire struggle, while she was being almost hacked to pieces by her assailant, Mrs. Gunger never ceased shouting for help. In ase none came she had fully determined to de- fend herself against an armed rufilan so long ag ‘Ufe and strength lasted. But SHE DID NOT ORY 1N VAIN. Policeman Jacob Schurer heard the screams and hastened,to the spot. He found the woman faint- ing,.staggering and almost ready to drop down e: hausted, while the cowardly beast who had perpe- ‘trated the horrible crime Was apparently gloating over his success in murdering a defenceless woman. But when he saw the officer coming the coward fed, closely pursued by the man. The latter overtook the iugitive on North avenue, and had no difficulty in conveying him to the Webster avenue station, where he gave the name of EF. 8. Grifith. With all haste policemen made their way to the ‘Park, and there found Mrs. Gunger IN A SBNSELESS CONDITION, and atfirst sight it was thought that she wasdead. Blood flowed copiously from a large number of wounds. She was conveyed as speedily as possible to the station house, where Dr. Geiger was called to dress her wounds and attend her wants. Upon examination he iound that she had been cut in twelve different piaces, but that none of the wounds were necessarily fatal, though the com- dined injuries might produce death. The heroic ‘Woman was afterwards taken to her home, and at last accounts was doing as weil as the most san- guine could reasonably expect, ARRAIGNED. The man giving lis name as GriMth was ar- faigned before Justice Kauffman, at the North Side Police abr eeyrs morning. Upon the evidence of Dr. Geiger that the injured woman would not be abie to appear for some time, and that ler condi- tion was dangerous, the examination was con- tinued until the 11th inst. upon two charges—one of assault with intent to kill and the other assanit with intent to commit rape. In each case bail of $6,000 was required, in default of which the villain- Ous wretch was sent to jail. HISTORY REPEATING ITSELF. The first man ever executed in Cook county was Convicted efa similar outrage on a Mrs. Thompson in the woods where now Lincoln Park ts located. In that case the injuries proved fatal, and the per- ‘trator, Stone, was convicted and hanged. LIVELY TIMES IN THE COURT HOUSE. Samuel Schuster, of123 Second avenue, a drover, who says that his infinence elected Jacob Seebacher to the Assembly and secured his appoiatment as deputy sheriff, yesterday afternoon went into the new Court House to see Deputy Sheriff Patrick J. Hanbury. While conv art? with the latter Seebacher, as it is alleged, approached Hanbury and said to him:—“What do you want to talk to that man for; he will be bankrupt to-morrow.’ Mr, Schuster turned suddenly and told Deputy Sheriff Seebacher that he was a har. A fight at once ensued, and seebacher strack Schuster four or five times, much to the amusement of the crewd that hangs around the Court House. Yesterday afternoon Mr. Schus- ter, accompanied by his counsel, Mr. Abe Hummel, applied to Judge Hogan, at the Tombs, for a war- rant lor the arrest of Seebacher.
