A HISFORY OF ‘THE: CRIME. Dr. West, who is aged‘about teenty-Jour yeara, @ Delawarian by birth, and a man. of e@wcation and refinement, has resided in this town farsome years, ‘and was well esteemedby all with whom he became -ecquainted. He. is a ‘man, however, given to ex- periments and.ecientif.c research, apa for over a previous to his .arrest had beem experiment- with a new kind of gas,.the properties and ~onjects of which he carelully guanded from his rs. Hts ostensible business, however, was the cure of pulmonary complaints. About the time Operations: in his laboratory in this place he insured hi favor of his wile or $24,000; and the better to prepare for the werk he had laid out, he reported that the new gas was of such a character that it would remove the skin ‘from. the haman body.and destroy all chanees ot identifica- tion, or even to deve: e the complexion or color ol the body. On several ocensions he invited per- sons into his labornatery and expatiated upon the wonders of his invention, and even in some cases tavited his-visitors te, partake 01.1. No one’s sus- pacion, however, Was aroused uatil Thursday morn- img, December 6, 1872, when the people of the neighborheod were startled by 2 TRRMLVIO. EXPLOSION au the laboratory ef Dr. West. The citizens hur- Tied. to the place, and upon the floor, after tbe fire had been extinguished, was Jound ‘the body oi a man, supposed to be the Preiessor, and subse- quently qmuenvor, ‘The head, ieet and bands were mis: ng and the skin had been peeled irom the flesh, shreds of clothing found near the remains were identified by Mrs, West as her nusband’s, and for a littie time the, people believed that the ingenious West had -dalen a victim to his own invention. A qore careful examination of the premises discovered a large quantity of powder under the floor, meur (he body; and the additional discovery that the limbs had * Deen cut and not blown from the trunk quickly excited.suspicion. Then it was remembered that Mrs. West petrayed but littie sorrow at her be- seaverent, and the fact that West's life was heavily ausured started the authorities on a new theory— viz., that West liad, to use a police term, “PUT UP A JOB? to defraud the insurance companies, and to do ‘which.more successiuly had added murder to his come, The eXamination aiso showed that the skin had been carelully peeled irom the body. The next ining to ascertuin was the name of any one who Was missing and whose body could have been ope- rated upon by the Professor. It was quicaly ascertained that a few days before the explosion West had taken into his employ a colored man named Henry Turner. but more familiariy styled “Gooch” Turner, and a search for him failed to elicit any intelligence ol his whereabouts, Some beheved that “Gooch’’ bad murdered his master, mutilated the body, caused the explosion, and then decamped; wlule tae great mass of the people sus- pled that the negro was the victim and the Pro- fessor the crimimal. The latter theory was foliowed by the officials here, who s00n ascertained that a man, .with his face elosely muilled, a few minutes after the explosion boarded ‘a ireight eo trap bound south, waich had stoppea at this place. Conductor svans informed them that “the man, who a bundle, lett the train at ‘Delmas, ered @ carriage .
