NEW YORK HERALD, TUESDAY, JUNK 3, J873—TRIPLE EDUCATION MATTERS, Examination and Opening Exercises in the College of New York, the Catholic Protectory and the New Primary School No. 4. COLLEGE OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK. ‘The examination of candidates for admission %e the introductory department of the College of the city of New York began yesterday. At & quarter to nine o'clock in the morning the appli- ants assembled in the college chapel. There were $55 all together—a much iarger number than in the previous year. The examination was in spell- fmg, arithmetic, English, grammar and reading, Is was conducted in accordance with the usual Pregramme; for the most part in writing. The examination in this department will be concluded to-day, Out of the students presenting themselves for admission 143 have chosen the ancient classical ©ourse, 110 the modern classical course, and 296 the eommercial course, Of the last 94 have chosen French, 198 German and 4 Spanish. The parents of gix have not yet determined which course to choose for their sons, All of the scholars have had $0 pass a year at Jeast in one of our public schools, OPENING A NEW PRIMARY SCHOOL, The new and handsome Primary School No. 4, between First avenue and avenue A, on Sixteenth street, which is now entirely complete and presents quite an imposing appearance, was formally opened Sey tay under the direction of the Principal, iss M. Lownie Warner, by a series of interesting exercises by the children. The exercises eom- menced at nine o’clock A. M., and were concluded about noom, All the Board of Trustees mae present, together with Inspectors Gerard, Agnew and Hayard. Mr. Harris Millard Drenited atthe piano. The exercises included an openin; Brayer, singing, recitations, declamations an jialogues, and were very commendably carried out. The school is a fine structure, about 120 feet by 0. It has three foors, including the basement; is constructed of brick, with granite stone facings. = stairways are admirably arranged in case of » and, indeed, the whole building seems fire- Bree roof toa greatextent. There is thorough ven- tion in every part. It cost $100,000, and has Deen built during the short space of the p past year. THE CATHOLIC PROTECTORY. The annual examination and exercises of the Catholic Protectory, Westchester county, N. Y., came off b mr goa at one P,M. The exercises ‘were confined to the male department.
