2 His Policy for June. ‘THE BANK STATEMENT. ‘The Manipulations in Gold. ‘CLOSING PRICES ON SATURDAY. WALL STREET, } Sunpay, June 1, 1873, ‘There have been spasms of activity during the ‘week in all departments, but the general tenor may be represented by one word—dulness, ‘Ihe specu- lative spirit has shown its chief interest in Pacific Mail and Union Pacific, but both of these stocks have been subject to certain artificial influences that are already familiar, and it is scarcely neces- ®ary to advert to the causes of fluctuation, The ‘remainder of the market in the main was not only ‘@teady, but at the close of the week manilested a Strength in keeping with the precedents that at- Zend this season of the year. THE FOREIGN NEWS. Im the main the foreign news presents no fea- ‘tures that are not encouraging. Our bonds, rail- Toad securities, consols, reutes and the premium ‘onthe French loan indicate a solid Continental substratum. This genial influence being reflected to our own market, the resuit is seen in firm gov- ‘ernments, steady gold and strong stocks, THE MONEY MARKET during the past week has been remarkably easy, and at the close borrowed additional strength from the improvement in the bank statement, The latter, taken in cunnection with the poiicy of the Secre- tary of the Treasury, as joreshadowed beiow, would seem to indicate that we may expect a new ‘temper in the life blood of the nation. THE POLICY OF THE TREASURY. Secretary Richardson, in his despatches to-day, ‘which naturally atiord a cue for the operations o1 ‘the ensuing month, has instructed the Sub-Treas- ury of New York to “sell seven millions of gold and ‘to buy one million of bonds during the month of June.” The tendency of this order will be to dis- ‘turb the operations of the goid clique, and we may dook at once for a bear movement. THE BANK STATEMENT for the week was in the main favorable, in- asmuch as it shows a gain of $548,175, und nearly Testores the surplus reserve reported last week. ‘The legal reserve now amounts to $4,918,650, the percentage of reserve to habilitics in the case of national banks being about 27.61 per cent. There has been a decrease in loans, specie, circulation and deposits, with an increase of $1,579,400 in legal tenders. The statement, with its predecessur of ‘the preceding week, is given below :— May 24, May 31. bolt $46, Far $277,957,800 18,482,000 Circulation. 27,446,100 Deposits 208,136,500 Legal te 44,382,300 The changes for the week have been as follows :— Decrease in loans.. $1,887,500 Decrease in specie. 1,150,600 Decrease in circulation, 47,700 Decrease in deposits... 1,625,800 Increase in legal tenders. 1,579,400 The above figures show that the banks now hold ‘$4,918,650 in excess of the reserve required by iaw, @8 against $4,070,475 last week, the gain being $848,175, GoLD ‘was steady during the week. It was evidently not ‘the intention of the clique to torce prices in such @® mauner as to arouse suspicion. Yet there are grave reasons for the preseut manipulation, and ‘those who look at the relationship between specie and currency, and see the strong volume of the one and the slight substratum of the other, are forced to the conclusion that the parties who have 80 persistently absorbed gold for the last three ‘weeks, have done so with a keen eye to the future, ‘and in expectation of results that will accrue frem causes not more specu'ative than they are natural. GOVERNMENT BONDS YESTERDAY opened quietly, but retained their firmness, with Amereased activity towards the clese of the day. ‘The quotations indicated strong sympathy with the foreign market, and the demand is not likely to Blacken while surplus capital abroad continues to seek profitable investment. A fair business was done in the issues of 1831, 65 and 68. Secretary Richardson is reported to have received a despatch from Government Agent Catel, at Lendon, to-day, stating that “the called bonds are coming in rapidly. The indications are that another call will be made this week. SaTURDAY, May 31—6 P. M. ‘The trade movement was rather slow all through the past week, and’ mercantile affairs began to assume a quiet, Summer aspect. Apart irom a slightly accelerated export movement in bread- staff, there was scarcely a noteworthy exception to the general duiness belore noticed in the mer- ohandise markets, and the volume of business frem day to day showed a marked de- crease, Dry goods were decidedly dall all through the week, while hardware, groceries, &c., were quict, Cotton remained: dull and the sales were very light. At the Produce Ex- change dulness and depression were the features ofthe week. There was no inclination evident on the part of buyers to purchase flour to aay exteac and prices declined considerably. Wheat was in fair demand, both for spot and forward delivery, but on the basis of lower prices, and considerable sales were made for June delivery at a reduction of So to 7c. from the extreme figures lately cur- ront.
