CAPE OF GOOD HOPE, Long Continued Drought and Disastrous Consequences to the Farmers—Sheep Dying in Thousands—Trade and Pro- duce—Diamonds and Freight Rates. By mail from Africa we have our press files from tne Cape of Good Hope, dated at Port Elizabeth on the 14th of February. The journals supply the fol- Jowing summary of news:— GENERAL TRADE om JHE WOOL STAPLE. The past fortnight, says the astern He has not been marked by ay event of public impor- tance, Trade continues brisk and there 18 no ma- terial change in the produce market to report. The rains to which we rejerred in our last Rok mary were not so general as we then supposed, \ and distressing accounts respecting the state o! some ofthe northern districts in consequence of the drought have reached us. In the divisions of Richmond and Hope Town the drought is very severe, and sheep are dying by hundreds and thou- sands. One farmer we know lonk 1,600 sheep, and his neighbors count their losse: hundreds. Even in the districts more to the eae -east—Colesberg and Burghersdorp—drougnt prevails, In the divi- sion of Hope Town, it is sald, there has been no rain wort peaking of since last February— nearly a year. Indeed, as everybody knows, it must be very dry indeed if sheep die in such Dum- bers from the drought, STATE OF TRADE. The trade returns for the colony, and for each port, for the quarters and years ended 3ist Decem- ber, 1871-1872, are published, There is no denying that the past year was one of unparalleled pros- perity in the colony, The prices of the chief articles of export were well maintained in the home market, while its import. trade with giant strides far outstripped the business of any previous year, and this, too, without any rash speculatien or disproportionate increase of stocks, It is sur- aac where all the imported goods find an out- let, especially as the attractions of the diamond flelds have not to any great extent increased our population. The total value of imports for the whole colony for the year ended scember 31, 1872, was £4,388,728 against £2,586,298 in the pre- vious year, showing an increase of £1,803,430. To- wards this increase the three Eastern Province ports contribute not less than £1,233,082, or more than two-thirds, Cape Town shows an increase of £533,097, and Mossel Bay, £34,619, while Simon's Town and Port Beaufort show a decrease. EXPORTS, WITH DIAMONDS. The export returns are of a gratifying charac- ter, showing as they do @ large mecrease on the previous year. Tne total value of exports from ts colony during the year 1872 was £4,666,071, against £3,40#,635 in the previous year, showing a net increase of £1,257,436, upwards of one cvhird, and this, too, despite ‘the’ fact that diamonds ex- ported through the customs show a decrease of nearly £100,000, The value of om Ort including diamonds, 18 thereiore really much more than it appears to be. MARKETS OF THE MOMENT. Trade has been brisk during the past fortnight, and a good business has been done. Country buy- ers have visited the town, and large indents have been received from the diamond fields, Free State, and the northern and northeastern districts, There has been some specelation in coffee, the price of which has advanced about ten per cent, in consequence of the falling off of the crops in ‘the Rio market, which is more particularly rejerred to below. Flour, too, has advanced in price and holders are firm at current rates, The money market remains unchanged, The rate of discount continues at four to four and a-half per cent for short-dated paper and five per cent tor bills having three months to run and upwards, Exchange on London is slightly more iavorable to the seller, FREIGHTS. There has been some fluctuation in the freight market during the past fortnight. The two steam- ers on the berth—Royal Mail steamship Roman and steamship tae tees with engagements for Wool at 4d. to 4d. per Ib., but as they filled up rates stiffened, and to-day %d. per lb. for fleece- washed wool and %d. per lb. for scoured wool are the current rates. Grease wool, mohair and skins gd, eed Ib.; dead weight 40s, per ton, with the usual primage of ten per cent. Kates by sailing vessels nominal, nal, say 3gd. per Ib. THE SALT LAKE LAW TROUBLES, Sat? Lake Ciry, April 6, 1873. Judge McKean informed the Bar yesterday that no case in equity would be heard by the Court, in- asmuch as jary trial on the law side of the court could not be had, except parties agree, until Con- gress aids and corrects judicial affairs. The dect- sion works great hardship, but is apparently.un- avoidable. ——___ ++ MARRIAGES AND DEATHS. Markied. BRrowN—Prick.—At Zanesville, Ohio, on Monday, March 31, J.
