M. On Change to-day cotton on the spot was megiected and nominal, while futures were mode- rately active andashade firmer, Flour was dull, “wheat was. also dull, and corn was quiet but mot -espentially changed in price. THE DRY GOODS IMPORTS. ‘The total imports of foreign dry goeds at the port of New York during the past week were of the s@pecie value of $2,104,060, The amount marketed @uring the same period was $2,278,850. These fgares are a reflection ef the tragic accident to the steamer Atlantic, the loss ef whose carge appears 4m the abeve diminished importation of foreign merchandise. THE FOREIGN MARKET. The London market was unsettled by ramors ‘that the Bank of England rate of discount would be raised to-morrow, and consols and United States bonds declined, the former % and the latter 4 a 34 per cent. Subsequently consols recovered, and elosed strong, as if the apprehension excited by this rumor had been quieted by the intelligence from this side of the Atigntic of the advance in Sterling bills, the whole disturbance having doubt- ‘tess originated in the tendency of specie to leave London for New York, It is SIGNIFICANT, however, that the difference between consols for money and those for the account (next settling day being in the first week in May), which was *% this morning, is only + to-night. Yet we are ad- vised by cable that three months’ bills were quoted Only 434 per cent discount, In this closing recov- ery our bonds did not participate, but they left of steady. The amount of bullion withdrawn from the Bank of England on balances to-day was £170,000, Erie shares were weak and declined to 60%. The new French loan was steady and rentes tm Paris were strong, closing at 66. GOssIP OF THE LONDON MONEY MARKET. ‘The following paragraphs are from the London Weekly Circular of March 22:— There is » rumor that a syndicate has been formed after the New York model for speculating on our Stock Exchange, with a capital of £7,000, 000, pecans ved by some of the daring financiers who conductell the operations which ended in the col- lapse of 1866. There may be no truth in the state- ment, but the fleld ts 80 inviting that some men of Dusiness have long considered it probable wna; such an enterprise would be undertaken. It is well to look at our weakness straight in the face and to Btrive to repair, iustea@ of merely to hide. It is w@ndeniabie that the almost exclusive gold basis on which the pyramid of business is conducted has rendered the London money market pecullarly gensitive—more sensitive than even that of New ‘York to the withdrawal of gold. Given that ten- Sever, to alarm, and given the means of one ri Wacpoyp etal ey ore with searrite Prot there hing rotten or if prices What a combination Such as indicated Spc coemeemeeiet at at to pure! ely, Keep! e “pearing” point was reached, when the fa would be sudden, the sales enormous, accom- to produce the terror, with heavy with- wails ef gold —_ the bank. The Syndicate 1s said to possess 000 sterling, which would givea — power, ‘ina ‘controlling, as it deubtiess ‘would, many means of information, and still more of ing, slarming and false news, it mignt in- spire a panicy feline particularly if there waa any in the atmosphere, when we electrici' Wight sce mteeke and shares knocked about in Threadneedle street as they sometimes are in Wall The ota, ag of the money market in New York continues exert an evil influence on business, Stocks to a neavy amount are carried for the Wall 1 brokers by foreign bankers, many of them eee pt the failure of a considerable BI ad red caution, and there is seme uneasi ree tet oF admitted that the business of the United 8 at large is in athealthy condition. MONEY EASIER, ‘The money market was decidedly easier, and the Bate on call underwent a gradual decline from % ‘and interest to 7 per cent coin, The average rate of the day was between % and 3-16 per cent. By Chree o’clock the quotation had fallen to 1-16 a M per cent, and before the adjournment of side- ‘walk business, which occurred about twenty min- tes later, money was offered at 1-16 and loaned at Zeoin, There was a iuither contraction to-day of the outstanding extra greenbacks to the extent of $249,000. The buyers of the government gold @old yesterday took out $1,250,000 of it this after- moon, giving in payment $1,000,000 legal tenders and the remainder in national bank notes. ADVANCE IN FOREIGN EXCHANGE. ‘The foreign exchange market was weak at the @tart and rates were lowered a further 3 per cent, ‘Pat with the rumors from London and the subse- quent relaxation in money the market strength- med to 107}; and 108% for prime sterling, with actual business pretty close upon these rates, the @emand being fairly active for Saturday’s mail, ‘The following shows the revised standard of quota- ‘tions :—Sterling, sixty days’ commerctal, 106 a 107; @0., good to prime bankers’, 107 a 10714; do., short wight, 107% a 108% ; Paris, sixty days, 5.373, a 5.3114; 4o., short sight, 5.2734 a 5.264; Prassian thalers, ‘(0% o 71; antwerp, 6.373, a 6.31%; Switzerland 4356.05.31; Hamburg, 9334 # 94%; Amsterdam, 0% a 39% ; Frankfort, 40\¢ a 40%; Bremen, 93% a Oy. The latter figure te the highest’of the present specula- tion, and the highest, in ‘fact, wince the excitement ‘which followed the declaration of war between France aad Prussia ta the Summerof 1870. The clique bought severe millions of gold all the way up to 118%, but were suspected of trying to make a “tern” at that point. The advance to 118% brought out heavy sales, under which there was a reaction to 118}, but the market recovered to and 4 CURIOUS FACT gst | a number of London operators are ‘ oO or in this market, having sold through the American agents of the London hoyses where they deposited their margin, As a token of foreign ap- preciation of American credit the matter is quite significant, The course of the market is shown in the table :— 104. The currency aixes were exceptionally weak, and declined to 11334. STOCKS STRONG AND UNSETTLED, The stock market was strong with the relaxation im money and prices advanced quite smartly in the intervalup to the session of the second board. ‘With the rumors frem London and thelr apparent confirmation by the sensation in the Gold Room the market became heavy and lost part of its improve- ment, but the decline was checked by the eyentual relaxation jn money to 7 coina 1-16 per cent, and the market left off steady, if not firm, at 4 stage of prices between, but rather under, the medium of the day’s extremes.
