. * AQUATIC. The British University Oarsmen—Pro~ gramme of Saturdey’s Contest On the Thames—Na: and Weights of tho Crows. ‘The aquatic circles of England at present are in Biever of excitement regarding the intcr-aniver- ity boat race~the annual contest hetween the picked crews of Cambridge and Oxford Universi- ‘ties—which takes place over the usual course on the Thames on Saturday afternoon of this week. Phe sporting journals of London for some time past have parrowly watched and “worked up” fer their readers every item of interest concerning the gen- tlemen who have been selected by the respective educational institutions te do them honor on the eventful day, Both crews reached their quarters, mear Putney, week before last—the Cantubs on the 2th Inst, stopping at the Star and Garter, and the @xonians the 13th inst., making their head- mparters the Fox and Hounds, Since that “time they have had daily practice, gee $ bi p onal a! over Sat entire Cearac, whiceh is froin Putney ‘te Mortlake, a distance of four miles and three jugs; and at last advices, thongh no detailed eriticism: could be indulged in regarding their row- impresstons have been formed by competent bees ‘which Rave been given to the don pub- in the folowing shape :— Taken man for man Cambridge are unquestionably much the stronger crew, and when seated ti their boat their superior we shows to very marked aavantas At the same tine thelr rowing is not so clean and fin: ished, at any rate not so taking to the eye, as that of their eppobents, their most noticeable tautt being a tendency eo tung at the beginning of the stroke and a want of uni- fruity “about the. feather, in addition to. which they ut present scarcely seem to be thorough at home on their sliding seats, On the other hand, all reach well out, and, beyond all ques- tion,’ make their beat travel at ‘a great pace. The Oxtord rowing is marked by greater cleanness and regu- farity, and the men throughout make b er use of the “shdcrs” and get a good grip of the w at the co mencement of the stroke, but veem to lnck the powe row it through. This last defect was particularly notice- ble in their practice of yesterday (March 14), the result being that their craft seemed to “hang” between the me t boat in which the Cambridge crew will row was built by J. M. Clasper and is of cedar, 58 feet 4 inches in lengtn, 25 inches extreme width, 14) tmches deep amidship, 744 inches depth at Stel and at sternpost 7 inches. The Oxonians’ boat is four inches slerter and slightly wider than the @antabds’, Both cratts are fitted with sliding seats. Appended are the names ana weights (at last ad- vices) of the two crews:— . Lincoln : . Dowdlig, St Johia's “stroke) re St. John's coxmwat Both crews have accepted the Lora Mayor's in- witation to dine at the Mansion Heuse on the even- ing of the race. Boat Race on the Tyne Between Thomas Winship and James Lally—Winship the Winner. On Monday, 10th inst.,a straightaway sculler’s face was rowed upon the River Tyne, at Newcastle, detween two well-known Tyne oarsmen, named Thomas Winship and James Laliy, for £100 a side. The course was from two boats, moored twenty yards apart, at the High Level Bridge, up to the Buspension Bridge at Scotswood, a distance of aearly four miles, Great interest has been taken ‘m this match, not only because of the large amount ef the stake, but also because of the prominent Cane the two men hold among Tyneside scullers, insiip has rowed in several matches and at sev- eral regattas, but he more prominently came before the public as the stroke oar of the champion four- ed crew which rewed in the American races. is opponent, Lally, has so far confined himself, as an oarsman, to the Tyne, and has won for him: self a high name among rising Oarsmen, and nota few look forward to his winning, at some not dis- tant time, avery high pesition as an oarsman. The Gnal deposit of En @ side was made on Ffiday might, when Mr. William Oldham, of Newcastie, was mutually accepted as referee. The tess for position was won by Winship, who chose the north side. Lally got the best of the start by about three feet; in the first six strokes, however, Winship gained on him, and for a short distance ‘oth men rowed side by side. At 400 yards from the start Wiaship crept up, and at 600 jana is led by Tatty canoes length. his next few strokes lly appeared to be somewhat exhausted. Win- skip rowed en in fine asiyle, and at Redheugh Bridge, a distance of halfa mile, he led by three = ths. The race was now Virtually over, as never gained on his opponent, and Winship shot through Scotswoed Suspension Bridge an easy winner byelght lengths. Betting at the start was 7 to 4o0n Winship, and after the toss 9to4. A great Qmount of money changed hands, There was @ very large attendance, between fifty and sixty shonsand persons being’ present. Victories of the American Light-Weight Cnampion in Boxing and Running— He Defeats Faweett, of Birmingham, in @ Glove Contest and in a Foot Kace of One Hundred Yards, wince Billy Edwards, the American light-weight champion, left New York for England, his many pugilistic friends here, who remember him kindly for his straightforward conduct on all occasions, fave heard but little regarding his movements and mtentions while remaining in the land of his birth. ®nce or twice reports have reached them that he was about being matched against boxers of repu- tation, but these affairs always fell through, though the reasons were unknown. At last Billy has been Going something for himself—engaging tn a glove contest and ruuning a feot race with Fawcett, of Birmingham, and in both these events he proved the winner, which all that know him will be giad tolearn. The particulars of these sporting aflairs are tuus given in late English pape! Edwards ‘Was seconded by a well known ex-champion, Fuw- wett by one of the London division and a once rominent member of the Birmingham ring, while @ post of reieree was filled by a gentieman weil Known in the Mauchester aportiag circles, At tea minutes to eight o’ciock the men put up their bands and be; the fight, betting being at evens. Throughout the affair the balance of skill was de- cidedly in ravor of Edwards, who used both hands very eifectively, and, had the gloves been removed, he would lave ee short work with his @pponcnt, who peared ww rely be Bis = superiority nf tsa power, tn almost every round, he bored Edwards 'to the ropes, where he put on the hug, time after time ;in- @eed on One occasion the ropes had to be cut to re- lease the American. After the men had been fighting an hour, Kawards fell weak, and odds of 2 to 1 were oifered on Fawcett, After this, however, Edwards revived, and in the thirty-eighth round he threw bis man heavily with the cross-buttock ; aud, in the jorty-first and last, knecked him out of timo with a tremendons right-hander on the Jaw, At the end of one aay and forty-five minutes. About noon yesterday one of the employés on board the Bremen steamer Rhein, which is lying at the Bremen pier at Hoboker, on entering the boiler room discovered smoke and flames rushing through the apartment. The combustible materials near by were being rapidly encircled by the fire, when the officers and seamen hastened to get the water pumps in working condition and cast streams upon the flaming timbers. After a few minutes the fire, which might have proved a disas- trous one, was extinvutshed by the energetic efforts of the men, The officials were very anxious to keep the matter hushed up, ANOTHER STEAMBOAT SUNK Lrrtiz Rock, Ark., March 25, 1873.
