STOCKS DULL AND LOWER. ‘The stock market was dull and generally lower, particulary siter the bank statement, the com- bined unfavorable nature of which robbed the mar- Ket ofa fractional improvement which it under- went during the earlier hours of the day. The de- ¢iine, however, was not of important extent out- side of Lake Shore, which fell a further one per @ent on an intimation that the road is net likely to cofitinue earning enough to maintain the payment fs per cent annual dividends, particularly as it is Boon to be subjected to treble competition with THE CANADA SOUTHERN road on the one side amd the Wabash and C., C. C. and I. on the other (tne C., C. C. and 1. being now An adjunct of the Atiantic and Great Western and Erie lines), The St. Paal stocks were exception- ally firm, 1f not strong, and Western Union, alter @n advance te 86% and a reaction to. 86%, closed at 86%. Pacific Math was fever- ish, but mostly firmer at 57% a 56% 256%, and Rock Island toward the close became strong and rose to 11534. Erie was heavy and de- lined about 3¢ in face of the improvement in the London quotation. Boston, Hartford and Erie re- covered to 7% on the stronger opposition which the counsel 01 the company are giving to the move- ment for A FORECLOSURE of the mortgages. Harlem advanced to 13734, doubtless on seme quiet ‘‘point” from Albany. The Erie Railway Compauy commenced to-day paying the 1% per cent dividend on the cemmon and 314 per cent on the preferred stock, and the books of New York Central closed this afternoen for the 4 ‘per cent dividend payable April15. Complaint 1s made by the brokers that the new transfer agents’ of the Erie Company are unnecessarily slow in the ‘work of paying the dividend, In other agencies it is usual to have the checks for the dividend written outin advance, ready to deliver when called for. But in this case the brokers are compelled te await the tardy clerical details of comparing names and Ming out the checks‘in each application as it is made, In the Southern stock bends the Tennessees were hheavy and % a \ per cent lower. The Missouri sixes were strong, with sales at 9434. Jt was rumored that forged Wabash stock cer- tificates were in circulation, but no illustration ‘was at hand up to the close of business.
