THR GOVERNMENT GOLD SALE. ‘There were thirty bids for the government gold advertifed to be sold to-day at the Sub-Treasury, the amount called for being $6,740,000, at prices ranging from 114.51 to 115.22, The latter extreme ‘was bid by one firm for the $1,500,000, which was awarded to them accordingly. THE FOREIGN MARKET. ‘The London quotations came a little easier, say 1-16, for Consols and somewhat irregular for United States bonds, the 67’s being off a fraction and ten- forties 3% lower: Erie shares were active and trong and advanced nearly 144 per cent, closing ‘ata reaction to 5334, an improvement of one per cent upon the previous day’s closing price. The Bank of England made no change in the discount rate, which remains at 3% per cent. The bullion account of the Bank shows a decrease of £188,000 for the week. Frenca rentes continued depressed and declined to 56,90, MONEY ACTIVE, The money market was active, but at steadier rates, the extremes having been 1-16 on the one hand and plain 7 per cent on the other, both of ‘which were, moreover, exceptional. The average business of the day in call loans was at 1-64 and in- terest, equivalent to about 1244 percent per annum, and the quotation stood most of the dayat 1-32 a 1-32 and interest. Between two and three o'clock the Tate had fallen to 7 per cent. Before the close of banking hours it hardened again te 1-324 1-16 and receded to and closed at 7 percentcoin. GOVERNMENTS LOWER, The government list was lower contrary to wnat Might have been expébted of the advance in gold, and the ten-forties declined a full 3 per cent, while the new flyes receded about as much. The 678 were barely steady at yeaterday’s quotation— the majority of sales being-at 11655. The cur- rency sixes Were rather firmer, but without business enough in them to really test them. STOCKS DULLER AND FIRMER. The stock market was quiet, particularly as com- pared with its recent activity and excitement, and a languid duiness overcame it at times, as if it sympathized with the spring-like milaness of the Weather. It was unsettled most of the day, with, however, a gradual development ot firmness not inconsistent with the relatively easier working of the money market, which, in turn, was regarded as beneficently influenced by the call of the Comp- troller of the Currency for @ statement from tue banks of their condition as they were at the close of business last Saturday, particularly as these ret: eS te aes’ << te Bessey pezsesse: o zt 4 institutions now feel less restraint about maintain- ing too strictly the proportion of RESERVE TO LIABILITIES, ‘The market opened weak and fell off tn sympathy, with a deciine in Pacific Mail to 58%, but recovered in the interval before the second board, only to fall off again in the interval between two and three o’clock, or when the highest rates of the day were beimg paid for money. The eventual relaxation in money caused a fresh reoovery, which was given a sudden and very strong impetus by the despatch already quoted above as to Mr. Boutwell’s personal explanation in the matter of the $44,000,000 legal tender re- serve, an explanation, by the way, which seems to have been evoked by the persistant demands of the money writer in a democratic morning journal. The effect of this explanation was to send the mar- ket to THE HIGHEST POINTS of ‘the day, most of the leading features retaining to the close of business all, or pretty nearly all, ef the improvement thus acquired. Pacific Mail lead- ing the rise, as it had led the fall, advanced to 66, and-Western Union, the rival of Pacific Mail in the day’s activity, to 86%. The latter stock was steadier, the range of its widest Nuctuation having been 1% per cent. Erie opened at 663, in sym- pathy with the London market, but fell off in later dealings and became steady at am average of about 66. A risein Lake Shore to95 and the fluc- tuations in C., C. and I. ©, between 3934 and 40% were about the enly other noteworthy features. HIGHEST AND LOWEST PRICES, ‘vancing the market than had the sale in depressing The following table shows the highest and lowest ‘at. This influence was strengthened by & prices of the principal stocks durin; street Pp ~ ‘Washington despatcn to a Wall mews bureau, stating that Secretary Bout- Well had personally requested that publicity be made of his right and intention to issue the whole or any part of the $44,000,000 of legal tenders now held as & reserve whenever in his opinion it might be necess: to do so, Hereupon gold ad- wanced to 11534, Which is THE MIGHEST POINT reached since last Summer, and is within % per per cent of the highest reached during the year 1872, In sofar, therefore, as the progress of time has been expected to show a descetiding average of gold quotations the farther we get away ffom the period of the war and the original issue of paper money, the year 1873 will be a disappoint- ment, for, with the quotation of 1155 as the high- est of 1872, it is pretty certain, or at least the ‘chances are, that the highest of 1873 will equal or exceed it. This retrogradation is not a very for- tuitous circumstance for Mr, Boutwell at the mo- ‘ment he is about to resign his four years’ charge of the Treasury portfelie. Missouris and new South @arelinas were steady at 94 and 20 respectively. The politi- . TuvurEspay, Matifiis—eP. M. The trade movement was still slow to-day, as a rule, but there were more exceptions to the rule than for a long time previously. The most note- worthy exception was at the Produce Exchange, where there was decidedly fore activity in wheat, and a comparatively large business was consum- mated on the basis of advanced prices, The move- ment was mainly for shipment to Liverpool, pri- active market there at full prices. Vessels for charter Were still scarcely to be found, but there was rather more room by the steamers. The scarcity of tonmage is still seriously felt, and tends to greatly curtail the export movement in the leading commodities. Floug ‘was still dull, but prices were nominally un- changea. Corn was dull, but firmly held. Oats were also dull. Whiskey remained steady. There was continued activity in provisions, nbtably in pork and lard, which accordingly ruled firm, with considerable sales. In lard a large business was reported in contracts at full prices, Petroleum was dull and easier.
