Wheat was also qgufet and unchanged, while corn was in better de- mand and firmer. COMPARISON OF THE EXPORTS. THE FOREIGN MAREET, ‘The London quotations caine bueyant for consols, ‘which were +; higher. United States bonds were a ‘trifle lower for the 67's, but strong and higher for the ten-forties. The new French loan was strong and advanced to7a7'< per cent premium, French rentes in Paris were lower at 57.35. Erie shares in London advanced to 523;—equivalent to about 0555 4n'our currency. MONEY EASIER. ‘The money market underwent a gradual and, what looked like, ® natural relaxation, ite ten- tency to ease having been quite marked tor several ays past and having been interrupted only by artificial influences. Early in the forenoon the business was generally at 1-16, both for new loans and for renewals, and as high as 8-32 was paid in exceptional cases. But as the day advanced the fate declined, until it had reached plain 7 per cent some time before three o’clock, subsequent to which hour the quotation went as low nominally as & percent, Mercantile paper was quoted 10 a 12 per cent for prime nam Foreign exchange was weak early, but left off rather firmer, at 108 a 10815 for prime bankers’ sixty day sterling and 109 a 40035 for sight bills. THE WESTERN MONEY MARKETS. ‘The progress of the relaxation in the Western Money markets, already adverted to in the HERALD, ts thus narrated by the Chicago Tribune ‘of yesterday :— Notwithstanding the continued stringency in the New York market, which wouid naturally be ex- ‘pected to affect Chicago to seme extent, money Continues to work moderately easy in mest parts of the Wei The demana trom ss. dealers, to Bettie their option urchases tor Mut was larg 3 ‘but as the funds only go out of one bi “into ether by these settiements Je ts antiol ated tl at, this temporary demand being over, the market ‘will work easier next week. The supply of funds in the open market is evidently increasing, and auoney is freely offered on collaterals at 10 and 12 yer cent, with a tendency to lower rates. GOLD FIRM—115 A 115%, ‘The gold market was firm on heavy purchases in connection with transactions in bills on Europe, the recent decline in the latter having brought in ,Jarge numbers of buyers, Early in the forenoon ‘@he market was streng and advanced to 1154 on ‘the further influence of the report that Congress, Defore adjeurning, had sanctioned the reissue of the $44,000,000 of. greenbacks, but the price eventually receded to 115,,on @ Washington tele- gtam crediting Assistant Secretary Richardson ‘with saying, in explanation of this report, “No action has been taken relative to the $44,000,000 Dill. The matter remains precisely as it did be- ore, the Secretary still claiming the right to issue ‘tne whole amount whevever necessary.” The ad- ‘vance im consols and in the French joan in London te-day encouraged the expectations ef a farther eduction of the BANK OF ENGLAND RATE Of discount at the meeting of the directors to-mor- Trew, but without weakening the market, which felt off firm at 115. ‘he principal fuctuations are shown in the table: In the geld joan’ market the rates ranged from 72 per cent for carrying to fat fer borrowing. The Operations of the Guid Exchange Bank were as fol- lows :— + $62,422,000 + 2,333,815 Currency Daluiices. + — 8,005,469 The European steamer took out $154, 319 in silver, ‘The Sub-Treasary paid out $110,000 on acceunt of interest and $7,200 0n account of redeemed five- twenties, THE CITY BANK STOCKS. The currency sixes were weak, and after sales at 114 continued to be offered at: that price, which ought to tempt buyers, as it is the lowest reached in a good while, and includes three months’ interest, Curiously enough the ten-forties were off %{, despite the IMPROVEMENT IN LONDON, The following were the closing prices:—United States currency sixes, 118% a 114; do., 1881, regis- tered, 11634 a 116% ; do. do., coupon, 11814 011834 ; do, five-twenties, registered, May and November, 11534 @ 115%; do. do., 1862, coupon, do., 11534 a 11545 AG, do., 1864, do, do., 11534 a 11534; do. do., 1868, do. do., 11634 411654 ; do., 1867, registered, January and July, 11434 0 114%; do. do., 1865, coupon, do., 1145¢ @ 114%; do. do., 1867, do, Qo,, 11634 a 116% ; do. do., 1868, do, do., 11634 @ 116343 do. ten-forties, regis- tered, 1103 a 111; do. do,, coupon, 111 a 111%; do. fives of 1881, regigtered, 1134 @ 113%; do. do., coupon, 113% a 113%. STOCKS IRREGULAR AND DULLER. The stock market was less active under the sub- sidence of the excitement in Pacific Mall and the abatement of apprehension as to bankruptcies, a numerous ameunt of which misfortuaes were feared from day to day. absorbed the earlier interest of the day, and after @ plump opening at 57 and subsequent sales at 5744 Meantime it gave way to the Mote active interest taken in Western Union Tele- graph, which was hammered steadily all day long, with heavy sales of the stock, and declined from 8744 to 84%, reacting at the close to 85};. In EXPLANATION OF THE MOVEMENT * it is said that the Clark party are anxious to get back the stock they sold at 87 a 88, just before the purchase of the Cuba cable, and either have made their peace with the Vanderbilt party, or are afraid ef being ousted irom control of the cempany at the next election. in the fact that the parties who “broke” the market to-day by freely have been heretofore identified with Clark, Schell and Gould in the Northwestern speculation. It is said to be their present intention to “smash” the stock down ‘ten per cent more, to about 75, Otherwise the market was irregular, ONE FEATURE toward the close being a sudden rise to #0 in c.,C.and I.
