‘PINANCHAL AN Recurrence of Stringency in the Money Market. The Rate on Call 1-32 a 1-16 “and Interest.” Money in London More Active, but Abundant at Nominal Rates. NSOLS A FRACTION LOWER. Foreign Exchange Firmer and Gold Weaker. ‘The Speculation at the Stock Exchange Defiant of Tight Money. An Exceptional “Break” in Pacific Mail on Fears of a Retraction of the Government Subsidy, “Erie Seeking to Enjoin a Foreclosure of Boston, Hartford and Erie—Tennessee and Vir- ginia Finances—The Richmond Conference of Bondholders. WALL STREET, } Monpay, Feb, 24—6 P. M. Ou 'Change to-day spot cotton was dull and mominal, Future delivery was only in moderate Fequest at %c. per 1b. easter prices. Flour, ‘wheat and corn were dull but nominally steady. COMPARISON OF THE IMPORTS. The total imports of foreign goods at the port of New York, for the week ending February 22, and since the beginning of the year, compare as fol: lows :— good $ doa 3,183,005 $5,2810455 Dry goods $3,405,099 2 -Gen, mdse. 4,620,654 4,895,250 4,701,760 Total for week.. $8,035,653 $8,028,264 $9,983,515 Prev. reported.... 40,216,851 46,814,331 53,692,477 ——_+ Since Jan. 1.....$48,252,504 $54,842,595 $63,675,992 THR FOREIGN MARKET. » The London money market was reported more active, but the street rate 1s still fully one per | cent below the bank rate, which continues to ‘be 344 per cent. Consols a shade lower and United States bonds steady, if not firm. Eries were quiet at 52) a 5244, equivalent to about 6434 in our curs rency. The new French loan was lower at a‘ premium of 5% a6 perf cent, and French rentes in Paris were back to 56.35. MONEY STRINGENT. The money market resumed the activity inter- rupted on Saturday by the advent of the holiday of that day and the rate on call, which at its lowest ‘Was quoted not less than 1-32, gradually hardened ‘as the day advanced, until at the close of business it reached 1-16 and interest. Among the govern- ment dealers the rate was 7a 7 coin, and some of the leading stockbroking houses got accommoda- tion at bank ‘on wide, margins at7 per cent cur- rency, but these latter transactions were rare and exceptional. COMMERCIAL PAPER ‘was neglected and nominal, Foreign exchange was firmer in the absence of offerings of borrowed bills and rates in actual business approached nearer, say to within + 43-16 of the asking rates of the prime drawers, which were 109 and 10974 for sixty days and sight, sterling bills respectively. It is conjectured that“the more active condidon of the London money market reported by cable to-day is attributable to the receipt of intelligence there of the recent heavy~loans of sterling to stock- brokers here on pledge of American stock col. rals. ne GOLD LOWER—114% a 114%. The gold market was heavy and lower, the price yielding another point to 114%, under the ostedsi- ble and reputed influence of the Treasury orders {er the immediate prepayment without rebate of he March interest on the ten-forty five per cents, The amount of gold to be disbursed on this account would have little or no effect upon the market were not the clique, as already intimated, tem- porarily disposed to see a decline in the premium. The speculation for a rise has been discouraged by the exceeding cheapness of money in London and by the utter blockade to exports of specie from this side; and the clique, after their successful and fucky unloading at the top of the market last week, are cautious about resuming operations until they see more clearly the future drift of the several circumstances influencing the COURSE OF THE MARKET. The principal fuctuations of the day are shown in the following table:— Jows:— Gold cleared. + $42,792,000 Gold balances - + 1,276,314 Currency balanced. . 1}468}590 The Sub-Treasury paid out $852,000 on account of {nterest, a portion of the amount being disbursed on account of the March interest on the ten-forties, and $9,500 on account of redeemed five-twenties. THE RAILROAD BONDS, The railroad bonds were generally quiet ana steady. The Union Pacific firsts and incomes were weak and lower and the land grants firm. Boston, Hartiord and Erie firsts declined to 3914 on the an- mouncement that the Erie Railway Company had applied for an injunction to prevent a foreclosure vof the mortgage. Dealings in the Southern State bonds were con- fined almost exclusively to the Tennessees, ‘which ‘were quite strong and advanced to 8244, doubtless on advices favorable to the rejection of the claims of the holders of the new issues of the Bank of Ten- ‘nessee in the appeal to a higher Court than the one which recently decided them valid. A Richmond despatch in possession of the Financier says that the conference composed of a con:mittee from the Legislature and a delegation from the holders df VIRGINIA BONDS agreed upon the following arramgement for @ par- tial adjustment of the public debt question:—Four per cent interest for 1873 isto be paid on consdis; four Dex ceat on two-thirds of the umfunded debt, COMMERCIAL, New York Central. + 10445 10354 Erie...... The chief feature in the upward movement was Western Union Telegraph, which advanced to 9244, but reacted about one per cent before the day’s business was over. A spirited demand for Rock Island carried that stock up to 114%, and as high as 1153; was paid where the buyer had the option of waiting sixty days before making payment. The see-saw between WABASH AND LAKE SHORE, under-the further induence of the completion of the Canada Southern Railroad, which is an ally of the one andva rival of the other, was again illus- trated in an advance of one per cent in the former and a decline of nearly one and a half per cent in the latter. Erie, keep- ing ahead, as usual recently, of the London market, advanced to 6534, and New York Centrai recovered to 1043, The enormous earnings ef the Jatter road—about $25,500,000—for the year ending October 1, 1872, explain the position the price of the stock*has occupied the past month or so, or since THE OFFICIAL REPORT was made public through its transmission to the State Engineer in obedience to the requirements of the law on the subject of railroad returns. In con- spicuous contrariety to the general tenor ofthe market Pacific Mail was weak and at times ne condition of half-panic, the price dropping from 70%4 to 67%¢ and reacting to 6914, only to fall still lower to 67!4, the depressing influence being the expected withdrawal of the subsidy granted last Winter by Congress, now that the members of that virtuously indignant body have had their anger pro- voked by the charge of the use of corrupt means in the furtherance of the passage of the law granting the subsidy. Boston, Hartford and Erte sold at | 9% on the news that the Erie Company had moved | in the United States Courts in Massachusetts for an injunction to prevent the Trustees from fore- closing upon the road. The CHESAPEAKE AND ONIO SIX PER CENT GOLD BONDS, the total amount ot which is only | | | do no sugh thing; he wanted to have the thoroughiy investigated, and whoever was to tae wrong he cape vs pened. . “Very weil,” he Court, “f will then phe complaint against Mr. Williamson ana be old you both in sureties of $2,620 each to ppear beiore me, when notified, for examination,” Wil- liamson gave the required amount of bail and was discharged, while nig less fortunate enemy had to go back to prison, THE KNIFE IN WILLIAMSBURG, Two Persons Stabbed by a Jealous Lover, An exciting but not a very grave episode oc- curred at the residence 18t McKibben street, Wil- liamsburg, near midnight Sunday. The cause of the tragedy is briefly tola by Misa Barbara Spengler as tollows:—“I had been spend- ing the evening with Mr. George Schneider at the residence of some relatives named Santer, and about hailf-past ten we started for 181 McKibben street, where I reside, and after reaching there we remained at the door some littie time talking. Samuel Sauter and Jacob Sauter, accompanied by a taller man, whom I do not know, followed ns home and wanted to come in the house, and £ would not let them. They were jealous of George, They said they wanted to see motner. I told them she was asieep. George then remonstrated with them, and I saw the tall man give him a push. About this time Mrs. Mary Whitman, the woman who Is stabbed, and who is George’s sister, came down trom up stairs and ordered them pay The taH man then gave her a push, and she cried out at once, ‘I am stabbed!’ and felldown. They then allran away, This morning we fonnd that wocn the man gave George the push that he had stabbed him, too, in the leit side. The wound. 1s @ slight one, and when he went away he did not know that he was cut,’ $15,000,000, are secured upon a property worth $35,000,000 to $10,000,000, and are fully equal in intrinsic value to tho Central Pacific bonds, ‘They are issuod in denominations of $100, $500 and $1,000, coupon or registered, and at their present market price, 87! and accrued interest, are very desirable. The CENTRAL PACIFIC SIX PER CENT GOLD BONDS are too well known to requite description or commendation. Their total amount is $25,359,000; they have for a long time range in market price near or above par. Their market price to-day is 104 to 104%. The WESTERN PACIFIC SIX PER CENT GOLD BONDS amount to $2,795,000. ‘This road is now consoli- dated with the Central Pa and the payment of its bonds, principal and interest, is assumed by the latter. As they have recently been introduced on the Stock Ex- change we expect to See them rapidly rise to the price of Central Pacifics, being substantially the same in char- acter and value. Coupon ponds, $1,000 each. Their mar- ket price to-day is 91% to 95.
