French rentes were bigher at $442, MONEY EASIER. ‘The money market was easier, but was again irregular, the tendency being, hewever, rather in favor of borrowers—that is, the highest rate of the day was 1-32 per cent flat against 1-64 and interest on Monday. The early rate for loans on stocks to 00d houses was at 7 per cent, but before one o’clock vorrowers paid 7 per cent coin, the rate hard- ening to 1-32 by @ quarter past two o’cleck. After ‘that period the supply increased, and before the Close of dealings on the sidewalk loans were made @t as low as 5 per cent, with more money offered ‘on the same terms. On government collaterals the rate was uniformly quoted at 6a 7 per cent, ommercial paper was steady at 8 a9 per cent dis- count jor prime names. FOREIGN EXCHANGE LOWER. The foreign exchanges were heavy under a bet- ‘ter supply of bills, and rates again declined. The ‘ow rates for money in Europe are stimulating foans of bills to borrowers on stock collaterala, the parties being those already conspicuous for similar transactions within the past few years. FINANCIAL MATTERS IN CONGRESS. A Washington telegram to a Wall street news bureau states that at a meeting of the Banking nd Currency Committee to-day a resolution was adopted directing the sub-committee on specie payments to report measures for— First—The redemption of Treasury notes in coin after May 1, 1874. Second—Authorizing the Secretary of the Trea- eury to issue bonds bearing gold interest not to exceed six per cent, to be exchanged for coin in case it is needed“r redemption; and Thdvd—Free banking under the National Cur- sency act after the Ist of July, 1873. GOLD 8TRONG—113% a 114% a 1137. The gold market again presented the anomaly of increased strength in the face of the 1urther weak- mess of the ioreign exchange, the explanation of which, in view of the reputed existence of a clique im the market, is not inobvious, It is, indeed, sur- mised that the advance to-day and the greater Scarcity of cash gold were intended to be punitive efsome of the clique whose faith in higher gold had been weakened to such an extent that they hhad become perverts to the bearish side of the “ppeculation, and had both sold out and sold short. The course Of the market is snown in the table:— GOLD FLUCTUATIONS, ETO. In the goid loan market the rates ranged from 6 percent for carrying to flat for borrowing, The | operations of the Gold Exchange Bank were as fol- lows :— Gold cleared $56,366,000 Gold balances 1,547,305 currency balances. 1,878,882 The Sub-Treasury paid out 000 on account of amterest and $300 on account of redeemed five- twenties, THE RAILROAD BONDS, The ratlroad bonds were unusually active, with a ‘Well distributed business, the continued etfect of the proposed further refunding of the five-twen- ties. Mr, Sherman was very courteous, and expressed him- self willing to give any information in hus power. “1 have been sent to ascertain,” aald thé FS porter, “what action the road proposed taking on the question of dividend on the preferred stock, “The matter is undecided,” said Mr. Sherman. “It was referred to acommittee, and this commit- tee have made no report as yet.” “But ig not the period arrived at which the divi- dend should be declared?’ “Yes, I believe the usual period at which they are declared is passed, It 1s generally about the middle of January. Tugspay, Jan. 28—6 P. M. The merchandise markets were emphatically dull to-day, almost without exception. The heavy fall of snow intensified the previously existing inertia by rendering the transportation of goods almost an impossibility and causing @ deadlock in almost all departments of trade. Cotton was active and steady. At the Produce Exchange things were almost at a stand, and in some cases Prices were wholly nominal. klour was quiet, but with small supplies there was no pressure to sell, and the market was comparatively firm. There was almost no demand for wheat at any price. The export movement continued to be held in abey- ance by the scarcity of freight room, and holders would have been necessitated to accept of prices: decidedly lower in order to sell to any extent. The same remarks apply with almost equal force w corn, though the market was rather more steady, closing, however, in favor of the buyer. There was a@ pretty free movement in oats, and prices were again higher, the market closing firm at the improvement. Whiskey was dull and lower, owing mainly to the difficulty of moving it. The provisions market remained very firm, except for lard, which was the turn easier. Freight room was exceedingly scarce, especially for grain; but with very light offerings rates were barely sustained. There was little or nothing done ia groceries, but the markets were generally steady. Petroleum was quiet, with prices favoring the buyer. Spirits of turpentine was again firmer and closed very strong. Rosin was steady. Wool was very quiet, but the stock being light holders were firm and demanded full prices. Asums.—Receipts for the past three days, 49 packages There has been a fair jobbing demand for pots at un- ¢hanged prices; but pearls remained entirely nominal.
