FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. 4n Active and Steady but Easier Money Market. The Rate on Call Seven Per Cent Coin to Four Per Cent Currency. ——_-+-——— BUOYANCY AT THE STOCK EXCHANGE, —_+__— 4s It the Groundswell of the Spring T the Advent of the “January Rise?” e or The Optimists of New York Central and the Pessimists of Mariposa. pili an Sera WIE SYNDICATE STARTING SPECULATION, Gold Lower, with a Ciique Change of Tactics. The Effect on Government Bonds of the Re- vival of Syndicate Operations, WALL STREET, WEDNESDAY, Jan, 22—6 P. x. ‘On 'Change to-day cotton was in goed demand and steady for “spot,”’ while “futures” were an tc. per Ib. better. Flour continued active and closed dearer, while wheat and corn were quiet, but firm. THE GOVERNMENT PURCHASE OF BONDS. ‘There were nine proposals to sell bonds to the government, the amount tendered being $666,400, at prices ranging from 113.20 to 113.49. The price of gold was taken to be 1133;, which limited the acceptances to $516,400 at 113.20 a 113.37. THE SYNDICATE OPERATIONS. ‘The Washington news despatches of this evening state that the Secretary of the Treasury has taken no further steps toward a negotiation of the new Joan, but will probably make a choice to-morrow between the rival Syndicates who have submittea proposals to him preliminary to an immediate prosecution of the refunding of the six per cents. THE FOREIGN MARKET. ‘The cable telegrams continue to report a better market at the other side, the London quotations coming another \4 better for consols, as if the pub- lic mind were fully reassured of the pacific rela- tions of England and Russia regarding the Asiatic question. United States securities have been steady for the old six percents ‘nd firmer for the ten-forties and new fives, a not unnatural conse- quence of the proposed resumption of refunding of the former, Erie shares, after a feverish fluctu- ation, closed at an advance to 50%{—equivalent tg 63 in our currency. MONEY BASIER. ‘The money market was active, but with a relax- ing tendency and easier rates. ‘The rate on call among the stockbrokers was pretty uniformly 7 per cent, at which there was an active demand, with occasional transactions at 7 per cent coin. Among the government dealers the rate was about percent, with exceptions at 5and7 per cent. Toward the close of banking hours there was & pressure te lend in the market on the sidewalk, and the rate declined to as low as4 per cent for some nominal transactions just at the verge of three o’clock. The dealings in commer- cial paper were on a larger scale and on the basis of 8a9 per cent for prime names, the quotation ranging from 7 te 10 per cent for first class grades. ¥oreign exchange was firm and rates unaltered. GOLD LOWER—1153{ A 113%. The gold market was lower under the depressing Influence of the contemplated early resumption of operations by the Syndicate, the effect of which is rather of @ moral than of a substantial nature, for the reason that the farther refunding of the 62's will result simply in an exchange of one kind of bond for another by European heiders, the issues first liable to redemption being almost wholly held dn the toreign market. The market was alse heavy under a free supply of clique gold, which, as is now evident, was hurried!y disposed of yesterday before the action of the Ways and Means Committee had been made public, the clearances this afternnon— nearly $108,000,000—reveuling the extent of the transactions arising under this NEW INFLUENCE. Accelerated by these considerations the price de- clined to 113% ; but ata later period of the day re- acted to 114% (which it touched for a moment only) upon the announcement 4 shipment to-day of over $200,000 specie, compris- dng $150,000 gold, a foreign honse had engaged $250,000 to $300,000 coin to go out by to-morrow’s steamer. Toward the close the market softened again to 113%, and closed dull ana steady. The Sub-Treasury paid out $170,000 on account of past due interest on the public debt, chiefly for Jannary coupons, and $6,500 om account of the dwindling balance of CALLED FIVE-TWENTIRS of 1862, The course of the inarket is shownin the Mss 2PM 13% 3 : 1 it 11354 2 113% In the gold loan market the rat 2 ranged from 7 per cent for carrying to fat tor borrowing, The operations of the Gold Exchange Bank were as follows :— . The publication of the circumstances in yesterday morning's papers were in the main correct. The murdered man proves to be Charles H. Pfeifer, a carman, in the em- ploy of @ boss carman named Cassidy, doing busl- ness in Williamsburg as teamster for .De Castro & Donner, sugar refiners. Pfeifer was a native of this country, and resided with his wife ana four little children at the corner of South Eighth and Third streets, Williamsburg. He has worked for Cassidy for many years, and all agree in describing him a3 @ sober, industrious and inoffensive man, who would not be apt to atiack Nixon, as the murderer charges he did, with a whiMletree. He has recently been em- ployed at the Roosevelt street terry, and was in the habit of driving the extra horse used to assist the heavy teams of his employer up the hill, He was returning to the ferry from such service when he encountered the rufian who so murderoualy took his life. Be was very popular among the carmen about the ferry, and hjs murder caused such indig- nation that several of them expressed the wish that they could get hold of Nixon and elevate him upon a lamppost, Deceased, who was about thirty- five years old, worked as a teamster for seven years for Haveweyer & Elder, sugar bb sey igs of Williamsburg. He leaves his family periect iy de titute, except What assistance they may be entitled to from Montauk Lodge No, 3, Order of Red Men, Williamsburg, of which he / an esteemed and active member. A number of the members of the lodge called at the Centre Street Hospital yeste: day and identified his body, as did also his brother- in-law. Dr, Cushman made a post-mortem examination yesterday morning at the hospital. He tound that the bail, which had been fired trom a smal! Sharp's revolver, had entered through the nose and lett eye, traversed the brain, the direction being back- wards aad obliquely to the right, lodging under the dura mater, The postmortem clearly es:ab- lishes the falsity of Nixon's charge that Pielfer was standing on the ground in the act of striking him when he fired the fatal shot. Had he been on the ground when the ball was fired by Nixon standing in the wagon the course of the ball would have been downwards from the point of entry, whereas the course was horizontally and obliquely through the brain. The witnesses agree that the deceased was on the back of his horse when shot, and none of them, as far as they have communicated with Coroner Herrman, who has charge of the case, re- port any threatening demonstration on the part of Pfeifer, The murderer is an old and notorious resident ot the Sixth ward, and, the police report, has tre- quently been arrested for petty, offences. They Say that at one time he kept a fence, was a thief and the associate of thieves. At present he keeps a low gin mill in Baxter street, peauouted by low whites and blacks, and while this was ran by hia wiie he followed the ayocation of bill poster for one Lindemann, who keeps a place near Chathain square, Detective Van Buskirk, of the Fourth ward, reports that on the Ist of ‘August, while the colored people who were celebrating the emanci- pation of their brethren of the West Indies were, returning from Brooklyn on the ferryboat, Nixon’ got into an altercation with oue of the parry. and committed a felonious assault, For this he was arrested and taken to Es Market, where the se Was finally settled. verybody who knowa 1 gives hin a bad name, or as commonly expressed, he was “mussy’ and quarreisomo with all his associates. A member of Company C, Duryea’s Zouaves, called upon Captaiit irr and reported Shae while Nixon was a member of his cofapany he was c: quent Stealing frequently nd was flually drw ipod out of the Be ety af, Falmouth, Va., but equently return en. gaged in the Sale of newspapers.
