THE FOREIGN MARKET, The London quotations came steady for consols and United States securities, and with an improve- tient of % in Erie shares, The London Jnvestors’ Guardian of the 4th instant, referring to the fort- ‘nightly settlements at the Stock Exchange, says:— Several failures were announced, chiefly through over speculation in Eries; in oné case the differ- ences amounted to £40,000, on whieh a dividend of Bs. 4c, in the pound has been paid; in another case the differences were £12,000, to meet which the de- faulter had a balance at the bank of twenty-five shillings, + Itisto be presumed the latter gentleman has emigrated to America to start anew in New York, THE BANK STATEMENT. The bank statement proved quite favorable and surpassed the expectation of the street. The chief feature is a gain of over three anda half millions of legal tenders, reflecting the return of currency to this centre from the interior, the movement Returns from the Ohio and Mississippi Rayway Company give the following results for the two past years:— Operating Per- Earnings. A Washington despatch to @ Wall street news bureau says:— Jay Cooke & Co., associated with Rothschilds, Morton, Bliss & Co., Morton, Rose & Co., Messrs. Morgan and the Barings, London, through their representatives, have presented to Secretary Bout- well a written proposition for negotiating the bal- ance of the five per cents. At the request of Rep- resentative Dawes, the Secretary reserved his final answer until alter the meeting of the Ways and embracing more greenbacks than it was thought to do. The effect of this addition to the reserves has been impaired by a loss of nearly a million and a half of specie, the result of the heavy drain of gold into the Custom House to pay for duties on the im- ports of the week. The deposits are greater to the extent of a good five millions and the loans have been expanded over two and 4 half millions. The statement compares with its predecessor as fel- tows :— Specte: Circulation. Deposits. 207,441,500 Legal tenders... 40,876,700 —The changes being in Increase in loans. Decrease in specie Increase in circulation. Increase in deposits. Increase in legal te! An analysis of these figures shows that the banks now hold $5,499,100 in excess of the reserve re- quired by law, a gain for the week of $809,075, GOLD STRONG—112% A 1134. The gold market was strong and active and the price advanced from 112% to 113%, closing at 1133;. The immediate infuence occasioning the rise was the further Custom House return of the week's imports of foreign merchandise, showing a total introduction of ever eleven millions, which ‘was helped again by the considerable decrease of specie in the bank statement. The Sub-Treasury paid out $275,000 on account of interest and $6,500 on account of redeemed five-twenties. Wabash was weak and declined to 714, and Western Union was heavy and lower. Harlem was excited, and advanced from 117 to 1224, but re- ceded to 11934. The rise was variously attributed tg rumors of intended sales of real estate and to the anticipated early success of the underground railroad. New Jersey Central advanced to 104};. Boston, Hartford and Erie declined to 8 on the re- Ported return of the President of the company from Europe without veing successful in getting help frem foreign capitalists. Excessive Importation: of Foreign Goods—The Amount Last Week Over Eleven Millions—What H. B. Claflin Thinks of the Matter. The arrivals of foreign merchandise at this port during the past week amounted in specie values to $11,282,162, figures not likely to be exaggerated in view of the customs duties required to be paid upon the invoices, Last year the weekly average of the imports was $8,000,000, which amount was considered excessive. MR, CLAPLIN’S OPINION. A HERALD representative paid a visit yesterday morning to the firm of H. B, Claflin &Co., the largest dry goods establishment in the city, and, after threading his way through the network of cases that filled the immense salesrooms, arrived at the private office of Mr. Horace B, Clafin, the head of the firm, who received him with his usual courtesy. After taking a scat opposite Mr. Claflin the following conversation ensued :— HERALD REPRESENTATIVE—I have called upon you, Mr. Claflin, in order to arrive at the meaning of such @ large increase in the dry goods imports during the past week, Mr. CLAFLIN—I can only account for it by the ar- rival of the goods ordered by the large wholesale houses for the Spring trade. HERALD R&PRESENTATIVE—But, Mr. Claflin, the duties paid last week amounted to nearly four mil- lion doilars, which is double the ordinary receipts of the Custom House from that branch of goods, Mr. CLAFLIN—I do not believe they amounted to quite $4,000,000, but to some $400,000 less. HERALD REPRESENTATIVE—Well, how do you ac- count for such an increase ? Mr. CLAFLIN—It is generally the custom with Many of our large importing houses to send orders to their agents to ship goods soon after the new ear, and it popeet to be a coincidence that they ave all arrived together. HERALD REPRESENTATIVE—Have you reason to expect any very large trade this Spring ? Mr. CLAFLIN—Well, we expect a fair trade, but I do not see any reason to anticipate anything ex- traordinarily large. HERALD REPRESENTATIVE—Why do you have your Spring goods shipped so early ¥ Mr. CLAFLIN—When they arrive about this sea- son we have time to open the cases and have the goods arranged, in order to make a display for our country customers, + HERALD REPRESENTATIVE—When does your coun- try trade commence? Mr, CLA¥LIN—Buyers generally are in the city, going and coming, from the end of January until the 1st of March. HERALD REPRESENTATIVE—How do the dry goods merchants get along with the present Custom House authorities? Mr, CLariin—Speaking for myself, and I believe the generality of the dry goods trade coincide, there is every reason to be satisfied with the work- ings of the Custom House, and I believe that the present management is good, HERALD KEPRESENTATI VE—How ‘oes the general order business go along ? Mr. CLAFLIN—I have nothing to do with them; but I have heard no complaints aguinst their man: ner of doing busin thanking Mr. er rauewdral, The Huraty representative, after Clatiin for his courtesy, retired, rs) EPISCOPAL CHURC miitel str wil Divine. mer ts all iree.
