Flour, wheat and corn were quiet, bot firm, THE DRY GOODS IMPORTS. The total imports of foreign dry goods at this port during the past week were $1,409,643. The amount marketed during the same period was $879,487. THE GOVERNMENT GULD SALE, The advertisement of the government offering to sella million of gold excited bids for a total of 63,425,000 at 111 0 111.69, The million was awarded at 111,61 a 111.69, MONEY EASIER, For the first time in several weeks the money ou call has loaned at 7 per cent, the relaxation tooking legitimate to warrant hopes of its con- tinuance. The early rate, not only in new business but in renewals of outstanding loans on stocks, was the familiar “ONE-RIGHTH AND INTEREST,” which has been paid, it 1s to be hoped, for the last Mme. But as the day advanced the supply of money tcreaged, and by ten minutes to three o'clock had Weaned at 7 per cent, after which it was offered at 6 per cent, and transactions were reported at 5 per pent, It was too soon to look for an effect upon sommercial paper, which was still nominal. Foreign exchange was firm for sixty day and weak for sight sterling, with quotations unchanged. THR FOREIGN MARKET, Cable advices of a private nature report the Lon- don money market as greatly easier, the strect vate being as low as 83¢ per cent, against 6 per pent at bank. The quotations of CONSOLS IN LONDON flo not show any important’ variation, but our ‘bends have been rampant, the '67’s rising to 92% and the ten-forties and new fives improving in proportion. Erie sharcs show a rise of % per cent to 61, equivalent to 62% in this market. The Bank of France shows a gain of 600,000 francs in its bul- tion account for the past week. @OLD LOWER—111% a 111%, The gold market was weak anil lower, the price @eclining a further one-eighth per cent to 111%, at which it closed. The adveni of the now year with the current lighter tenor of the imports has re- vived, but only faintly as yet, the speculation ior the decline and sellers are slowly putting out con- tracts om the ‘‘short” side. It looks like folly to ge “short” of gold at prevailing quotations, par- Aicularly as the matter is regarded from the stand- point of the Stock Exchange, but OPERATORS IN GOLD pre furnished facilities for enlarging their dealings ten times the amount they would be capable of with the same margin or means in stock specula- Mon, and hence a smaller movement in the pre- jatum is attended with as large results. April and October, 22 a 24; Arkansas sixes, funded, 85 a 42, ‘The fiscal agents of the State of Louisiana an- nounce that no provision has been made to meet the January interest on the State debt, the machinery for the coliection of the taxes having been deranged by the political troubles in Louis- jana, There were no transactions in the bonds, which have been neglected and nominal for a good while, GOVERNMENTS LOWER. The government bond market was quite dull and the demand seemed confined to the foreign bankers, who were buying for the European mar- ket, where our securities are in renewed favor, judging by the cable quotations, which come higher day by day. The market here was again lower, as a consequence of the farther decline in the gold premium and on account of sales by parties who had been holding bonds temporarily over the close of the year to avoid local imposts of taxes; but the depression from this Jatter in- fluence scems to have about exhausted itself, and A STEADIER TONE was noticeable in the closing dealings this after- noon, particularly when the absolute buoyancy of our bonds in London became known, ‘The fol- lowing wore the final quotations:—United States currency sixes, 1125 @ 112%; do. do., 1881, regis- tered, 11434 114%; do. do. do., coupon, 114% a 115; do. five-twenties, registered, May and Novem- ber, 1125 @ 113; do. do., 1862, coupon, do., 112% a 112%; do. do., 1864, do. do., 113 @ 11344; do. do., 1965, do, do., 11334 @ 113%; do, do., 1867, registered, do. do., 1865, coupon, do., 112% @ 112%; do. do., 1867, do. do., 11356 @ 113%; do. do., 1868, do. do., 1134 a 113%5 coupon, 109% a 109%; do. fives of 1881, registered, 111% @ 1124; do. do. do., coupon, 111% @ 1124, STOCKS DULL AND FIRM. The stock market was dull in its general features, but exhibited a firmer tone, the relaxa- tion in money inducing a further advance with the attainment for several of the speculative favorites of the highest prices of the season. The improve- ment was most conspicuous in Erie, Union Pacific, Western Union and ©, ©. and I. ©., the last men- tioned rising to 383;. Erie went up to 62%, or to the level of the closing London quotation, but under the impetus of the relaxation in money moved a further 4 per cent, to 63%. The specula- tion in Western Union Telegraph is likely to be quite spirited, as its present ALLEGED INFLATION has tempted the organization of a ‘bear’? pool, who predict a big tumble in it before the adjourn- ment of Congress the ensuing Spring, while the “bulls” are sanguine ofa large advance to follow the resumption of dividend payments by the company. The price of the Northwestern shares advanced 3g a 3 per cent, without the record of any transactions. Pacific Mall was unsettled, but onthe whole firmer. The rest of the list waa steady, with in some instances a fractionally lower average as compared with the previous day, but the general result was A HIGHER AVERAGE of prices and a firm market at the close, The re- laxation in money inspired less activity and en- thusiasm than might have been anticipated, prob- ably because of a sceptical view of its continuance. In the case of Erie, the advance in which was sul- ficiently accounted for by the facts already cited, the upward movement was strengthened by rumors that the company would bring suit against Commo- dore Vanderbilt for the return of $4,500,000 paid him in the compromise of 1868, when he settled with the then directors of the road for the stock which had been issued to him to break the famous Erie corner upon Daniel Drew. Fripay, Jan, 8—6 P. M. The trade movement was necessarily slow to- day, the previously prevailing quietude being in- tensified by the extreme difficulty of moving mer- chandise about the city, rendering it useless for buyers to make extensive purchases. In view of this fact duiness was the most conspicuous feature to-day throughout the ramifications of trade, The markets were almost univer sally firm, however, and, though business was 80 light, @ buoyant feeling obtained almost everywhere, evidencing a healthy state of affairs throughout commercial circles generally, On ‘’Change flour and wheat were wanted to some extent for export, but holders were so firm ir their views that the actual transac- tions were extremely light. Corn was also very firmly held, and, though the movement was slow, better prices were obtained at the close, and the market, though dull, closed firm. Oats were de- pressed, and car lots were placed at lower figures. Whiskey experienced another let down, and there were free sellers. Provisions were firmer, esve- clally pork, which sold at better prices. Freights were necessarily quict, owing to the snow blockade, but rates experienced no further let up, excepting for grain, where lower figures wore accepted. Cotton was in demand and steady for “spot” lots, while “futures” were a shade better. Groceries remained quiet, yet the market was firm. No change took place in the petroleum market, prices being still entirely nomi, nal. Naval stores were dull, but nominally the same in price. Wool were quict, but firm. Metals were quiet and also firm. Some Activity in the Market Already Apparent—A Number of Private Salee Effected=The Famous “Club Heuse’” Property Disposed Of—Business Trans- acted at the Exchange Salesrooms. Contrary to general expectations, consideravle activity existed in real estate yesterday and the day before, but only among the large dealers, which, however, tends to confirm a previously ex- pressed opinion, that transactions in this line for the present year will be even more extensive than thoze of any previous period. Considering the ex- tremely bad weather, which is more apt to keep operators within doors, it becomes @ matter of surprise that any business should take place at all. Each and every one of the reai estate brokers, while being engaged with all their available furce in taking an account of the past “year’s business ana to strike a balance, still manage to find leisure time to effect a sale when a purchaser offers him. self. ¢ A number of private sales were perfected since the 2d inst., but the purchasers expressed a desire to keev their names and location secret, and in- deference to their wish we refrain from particular- izing. One of the most important of these sales effected thus far has been the following, made by Mr. William H. Raynor, .of No. 534 Pine street, which comprises the plot known as the “Club House” property, situated on Lighth avenue, 199.10 feet; avenue St. Nicholas, 199,10 feet; 180th street, 125 fect, and 1318t street, 125 feet, altogether ten Tuil lols, for $91,000, This valuable plece of ground Was purchased for @ permanent investment, and may be considered a bargain. On *Change, a fair audience assembled yesterday, notwithstanding the existing dampness under foot and overhead. The veteran auctioneer, James M. Miller, had announced the sale of four different parcels of property, by order of referees; but three of them were withdrawn—one of these, owing toa final settlement between debtor and creditor, two by adjournment toa future date, and the other sold, which consisted as follows :— One house and lot on the south side of Forty-third street, 416 feet east of Second avenue, 16.8x100.5, by order of atti i ta pega referce, to W. La Cutting, plaint for Mr. Benjamin B, Faire fnitd, by direction. of Jonn vt, Eatnan: referee, sold the three story high stoo} brown stone house, Peoria i LS eb mort- age Of $5,000, now hel yy a savings at Gates on Fifty-ninth street, eighty feet orm Lexington avenue, to John D. O’Riely, for $10,000, ‘To-day there will be very little more than stock sales disposed of at the salesrooms. THE FIREMEN’S MEDAL We publish the following satisfactory explanation in regard to the alleged delay in the awarding of the firemen’s medals of merit. As the matter is in the hands of Mr. T. Bailey Myers the firemen wil) rest assured that it will not be neglected. Mr. Myers, by his handsome donation of 6,000 volumes to their library and by other acts of kindness, has already proved the interest he takes in the firemen . of New York:— To THe EDITOR OF THE HERALD:— I notice in a communication in the HERALD of to- day a reference to the delay in conserring the Bennett medals on the firemen. The medais, four in number, have been for some time in the safe of the Department, awaiting the settlement by the commissioners of the relative merits of the many gallant fellows who are fair claimants for the rizes by their successful efforts in saving lile. here was & great delay in the striking of the medais by Messrs. Tiffany & Co., in consequence of the die being cut too thick to sup; ply two medals yearly from the income of Mr. Bennett’s liberal contribution, and a fear on their part of injury to itif they were struck as thin as the sum would justify. I explained these facts to Mr. Bennett just prior to his sailing for Europe, and suggested that in future one thicker medal would be prefera- ble. He asked to be allowed to increase the fund to an amount suiicient to continue the donation of two medals of the original size. ‘The endowment was made by Mr, Bennett send- ing me his check for the foe da without requiring any formal acknowledgment. { obtained his con- sent to the preparation of a deed of trust, and associated Messrs Robert 8. Hone and James rea McLane, whose position has been houorary, as have had the entire management, and it aay avoidable delay has occurred on the part of the trustees (of which I am not conscious) the re- sponsibility should fall on me. The commissioners are now making arrange- ments for a re presentation of the medals, ac- companied an address, at an early day, at Wiich I trust Those who appreciate the services ot the firemen and the public spirit of Mr. Bennett Will be fully represented. poe AG respectiully LEY MYERS, on behalf of the qrusteesof the Medal, New York, ss: 187: A Goon GOOD SUGGESTION, To THe EpiToR oF THE HERALD:— AS a preventative of the whole of a theatre burn. ing, why do they not have here in New York and through the States (where the theatres are built more substantially and ona much grander ecale in every respect than im Europe) a wire curtain, to be let down immediately after a performance? The rincipal theatres on the Con- saeitlet Snr ope uate re them. The curtain is on the same principle a6 the e Davy lamp.
