Prephesied. —--—_—__ Healthy Tone of the Market—The Broadway Widening Decision—Authorization by the Board of Apportionment to the Comptroller to Issue $3,000,000 Bonds to Pay Awarés on Riverside Park Improve- ments—The Projected Crystal Pal- ace Building—East Side Prop- erty To Be Greatly Enhanced by Its Establishment. —_— Our review of the real estate market for the past week, taken from a pecuniary standpoint, must Ye vory limited. The Christmas holidays in- tervening retarded business, and the little left after that the subsequent snow storm completely crushed. In consequence of these two events the transfer of property was very light indeed, and, in fact, no one expected much activity to prevail be- tween the 22d of December and the New Year. If, however, the prognostication of the oldest and most respected brokers and dealers in property may be taken as authority, the business of real estate after the holidays will be the most brilliant ever known. For our part we can only state, that ona close inspection and thorough examination there never prevailed a healthier tone in “Real Estate Matters” than at the present time. Hold- ers of property tenaciously retain the same at firm prices, while buyers are willing to make oon- cessions even. at the stir rates demanded, ENDING IMPROVEMENTS ~*~ all over the city, in altering, extending and widening streets and avenues, have thelr influence on property lying contiguous thereto. One of the most important of these transpiring during the past week was the confirmation ¢ of of the 2 at ssments ade by the “last appointed commis ners” ‘on the Widening of Broadway. The decision of His Honor Judge Larned was published im the HERALD on the 24th inst., which wound up with the infor- mation that “it was stated an appeal would be taken from this decision of the Court, and that if necessary the case would be carried to the United States Supreme Court.” Should this occur it will be done only by ONE PARTY INTERESTED in the award, as all the remainder are perfectly well satisfied with the action of the Commissioners, Itis, however, expected that the wise counsel of friends will prevail and no appeal be taken, which can only result in retarding a much needed and highly important city improvement. The only pity is that the law legalizing the Broadway widening, from Thirty-fourth street to the “Circle” at Plity- ninth street, did not include the space between Thirty-fourth and Twenty-third streets, or even down as far as Seventeenth street. Then Broad- ‘Way, when so completed, would have been one of the finest avenues in the city. The last snow storm demonstrated most forcibly how sady Broadway needed ADDITIONAL SPACE FOR VEHICLES. While the cars on the adjoining avenuca were only hindered from running long enough for the snow ploughs to clear a path, Broadway, after the sidewalks were cleared, had no travel thereon whatever, owing to the great height of the snow thus accumulated. It was only late in the after- noon, and after laborious work by the employés of the road and several ponderous snew ploughs, thata passage for the cars could at length be made. Tre wider streets and avenues were not subjected to such annoyances. AS soon as the Broadway widening is compited | the cars now running on this street should be continued all the way to the end of the island, and property on that line must then necessarily in- crease lergaly in valae. The next important event affecting A RISE IN HEAL ESTATE bas Nai during the week was the tend a Board of Apportionment, meeting. the 27th inst., at the Comptroller's yee at which t the. following’ bonds were ordered be raised :—Asscssment fund bonds, au euapter 579, section 18, Laws of 1853, $2, byt ovement stock, chapter 920, Laws of 1200; ni ‘amounts are to be applied for paying for the land for the ct Park, and ordered to be used for that purp: ‘The effect this action wiilhave on pooner ded nd yest of the Riverside Park cannot the rejection of ths appeal cur anpeancrmant or the re} of peal ag ess~ ments on account of this Park by the Court of Ap- peals, ahead of all other journals, at once enhanced the value of peearty. yet reg 9 and even own- ers felt somewhat uncertain of the Park being an established bah for tear the. Yesterday at the Fark—The Ponds Greatly Crowded—Fun and Frolic on the “Ringing Steel.” The gayest of times was experienced by the skating fraternity yesterday at the Park. No such gathering has before been recorded this season, and though, perhaps, larger crowds have been present on the several ponds during the past two or three years, there was never observed such a respectable throng nor one that so heartily appre- clated the privileges extended them. Early in the morning men, Women and children commenced to visit the lake in scores, and before noon there were four or.tive hundred bent on all the fun that the occasion could possibly furnish. Many of these were very proficient in the art, and, having considerable “elbow room," displayed their skill to appreciative lookers-on. At two o'clock there was such an increase of visitors that both ponds were black with them. Young gentlemen came with their sisters, husbands with their wives, little boys with tneir pretty-faced and sweetly dressed smalter sisters, and beaus escorted belles first to the yalung | rooms, where thelr skates were ad- justed, Sand then “to the “jee, where one and all fairly revelled in the enjoyment of the hour. HEGROES IN THE PATERSON PUBLIC SCHOOLS, At the meeting of the Paterson Board of Educa- tion om Friday night there was one of the most lively munteipal Board discussions ever heard in that city, For several months the matter of ad- mitting colored children to the public schools in the same classes as the whites, and to enjoy with them all the privileges of such schools, has cropped up once in a while, but never reached any further disposition than the admission of two colored children into one of the public schools. Recently a couple of lots were purchased and preparations begun for the building of a col- ored school, but preceedings have been stopped, with the idea that such a building would not be necessary from the yas geilas sie the ition At the meeting held ques peo to aciimax. A petition was received from ome colored people the establishment of a colored evening school, the pavicen not desi to go $0 the white schools. Finally the matter came te a "direct vote, and was passed by a large majority, only two or three members op ouing t What will be the result of this is hard to tell. None of the School Commissioners denied the con- stitutional right of the colored children to attend the white schools; but during the continued exist- ence of the prejudice thas prevails upon both sides many decmed it an ill-advised arrange- ment. The resolution will probably result in the abolition of separate public schools, and the mixing of the by and blacks together in the same schools. principals of private schools are delighted with ft arrangement, as they pro- fewa pa hoo. falling eff of the ‘attendance at the public schools, and a gencral resort to the pri- vate institutions of learning. PITCH AND TOSS. Snow Shuttlecock Between Citizens and Car Companies, THE SHOVEL WARFARE. Im fact things, like the snow and garbage are somewhat mixed, and what is evorybody’s busi- ness is nobody's business, Floundering pedes- trians wanted to know why the Street Cleaning Commission were not at work, especially under the new reform regime, which purports to make this metropolis a Paris in cleanliness and. am Elysium in comiort, but it still remains a Cologne for filth and an Alaska for impaasibllity except om snow shoes. The Police Commissioners waited awhile and then attacked Broadway. Men with materials were soon at work, and in a short space of time the great artery was cleared from Union square to the Battery, at an expense, tt is eati- mated, of some twenty thousanit dollars, OFF OF BROADWAY, however, especially in the narrow streets of tee lower part of the caty, there were continuous lines of rocky mountain ranges and Sierra Nevada im mintature, ne had to travel a considerable dis tance to find & crossing, and how the wholessie houses in Church, Oollege and contiguous streeta ever managed to receive and despatch goods during the storm only the draymen and express companies can tell. These companies, finding the city authorities had evidently made ug their minds to wait for a thaw to relieve them from the snow elephant, were constrained to put theés shoulders to the wheel and bring out the snew plough and the shovel brigade, Then came THE TUG OF WAR. Astonished proprietors looked shiveringly out e# snow-enwreathed windows and found a Book ot Genesis being enacted under their peering eyes.
