Yesterday the Methodist preachers, for the twon- tteth time, demolished Professor Tyndal and his prayer test, and raised the standard of Christianity on the ruins of the scientists. Revs. Mallory, Taylor, Wood, French and others opened their masked batteries on the strongholds of science. Mr. French gave an illustration from tis own per sonal experience of a physical answir to prayets When, as a young man, he entered the Methodist ministry in the Northern Ohio Conference he had a disease in his eyes which compelled him to -wear green glasses, He found that his ministry was not as effective as it might have been on this account. For two years, there- fore, he prayea that God might heal his eyes. One day, while dining with » large company, the wae bade him to remove his glasses and declare to t company that he was healed. He did so and as Pg as eneae his sight was wholly restored, so at, though he 1s now sixty-two years of age, he does not wear glasses, nor has he ever worn them since that day. Rev. Mr. Rutledge, of Nashville, Tenn., spoke on EDUCATION AMONG THE COLORED PEOPLE of the South. He showed that while the Methodist Episcopal Church has given attention to mission- ary efforts, Church extension, tract distribution and other interests among the negroes it has failed in the educational interests, which he deemed one of the most important features of Reine work in the South.. The Catholics, Con- nalists, Presbyterians and other de- nomi ations are there with their teachers. Last year the American Missionary Assocn tion, a Congregational body, spent $228,000 and maintained 346 teachers in the South. This is w larger sum than the Methodists expended there for all their connectional interests. ie Presbyterians spent $60,000 there. The Congregationalists have but 3,000 ‘colored mombers in the entire Southern country. The Methodists have 150,000, and yet maintain only seventy-five teachers, eachers of the South stand between the preachers and the pe and tend to destroy the influence of the former. ‘The Church is obliged to call unlearned men to the ministry. Some of them can read, but cannot write, while others can write well, but are bare}; M able to read. The Methodiets build most of the churches for the colored people, and every church in the South is a post office, and Mr, Rut- ledge believed that at least 600 letters are dis- tributed in most of the churches every Sabbath. These are read off by the teachers because the ministers are unable to do it. And these teachers thug stand between the pastors and the people, and-many yor a are hostile to THE Y HE ITINERANT SYSTEM OF METHODISM, The Catholic Church, too, 48 paying much more attention to the education of the colored people than to their evangelization. The Sisters of Charity go from house to house instructing the colored: women in coments duties and in the rudi- ments of common school education, And while they may not have much success with the older folk there 1s great danger, as Mr. Butler remarked, that the young people Will take to that Church in large num verre Mr. Butler thinks that the Metho; dist policy of organizing colored conferences dis~ tinct from conferences of white ministers is detri- mental to the best interests of the colored people, who are not yet intelligent enough to carry thetr own spiritual affairs unaided, It fosters, al! the spirit of caste, which he conceives to be im jurious, Mr. Rutledge is here now peer ‘among the churches to awaken an interest in beli of Met! Ln aid education in the South. Next Mond the preachers will have 2 — eusay on ‘A hilation,” by Rev, M. 4 Te
