On 'Change to-day cetton was in good demand and.unchanged for “spot,” but sfc. a ic. per pound better for “future.” Flour and wheat were ‘ull, while corn was quiet but firmer. COMPARISON OF THE EXPORTS. The following shows the exports, exclusive of specie, from New York to foreign ports for the ‘week ending December 10 and since the beginning of the year:— 1870, 1871, 1872, For the week... $4,679,671 $4,176,158 $4,556,034 Prov. reported. 180,168,855 223,699,423 221,108,963 Since Jan. 1,..$184,848,526 $227,866,681 $225,590,047 THE FOREIGN MARKET. The London quotations come steady and about as last reported. United States bonas are not quite #80 firm, but the changes in prices are not impor- tant. Consols are quoted ex the ‘Christmas in- terest,” which is not payabie until January 5, or one Gay before Little Christmas, owing to the exci- sion of time made by the adoption in England of the Gregorian Calendar. Eries were reported 3 lower for actual business, with the quotation as beloro. The Paris market shows lower prices for rentes, but the decline is probably a reaction from the re- cent advance rather than a result of fresh political agitation. A further reduction in the Bank of Eng- land discount rate is looked for, but will hardly be made for a week or two to come. ADVANCE IN FOREIGN EXCHANGE. There was @ further advance in the rates for foreign exchange, the leading bankers asking 108% for sixty days and 110% for sight sterling bills, but allowing a commission of % for round amounts. ‘The current demand for each mail steamer the past few weeks has been quite active, and the bankers, in covering, have denuded the market of commercial bills. It is a healthy sign when our merchants remit in this way, and close up accounts rather than borrow gold and exchange against the chances of a decline later in the Winter. The vicis- pitudes attending this species of speculation have deterred the merchants this year from a repetition Df the practice, and it looks as if 1872 would close bn a quite general _ SETTLEMENT OF FOREIGN ACCOUNTS #nd'a smaller mercantile interest on the “short” side of gold than has been the case since the close ofthe war. There were no new developments as $0 the suspension of Jacob Fréres, of Belgium. The following were the closing rates:—Sterling, sixty days, commercial, 108 a 10854; do., good to prime bankers’, 108% a 108% ; do., short sight, 11044 a 11034 ; (Paris, sixty days, 5.323 a 5.28%; do., short sight, 5.23% @ 6.2354; Prussian thalers, 71a 71%; Ant- jwerp, 5.31% @ 5.26%; Switzerland, 6.31% a 5.25; ‘Hamburg, 94% 89634; Amsterdam, 30% a 40%; Frankfort, 40% a 41; Bremen, 94% a 9534. ' THE NEW LOAN. ‘The refunding of the national debt through the Megotiation of the new loan is beginning to re- enlist attention in financial circles. It is said that (oad offer of the Rothschilds to take the remaining $300,000,000 of the 5 per cents at par, in goid, with he privilege of calling all the 434 per cents within year, has not been withdrawn, and that Secre- itary Boutwell will close with it if not instructed to he contrary by Congress. As the new iflves are now selling in London at 89—equivalent to about 98 dn our gold—it is diMicult to see how the Rothschilds ware going to make a profitable market ior the joonds after they buy them. : MONEY ACTIVE. The money market was still quite active, but a perceptibly easier tone was discernible, although che modification was not of any important extent. ‘The business of the day was at 7, coin, to 1-32, ‘with loans at as high as 1-32 and interest, and others again at as low as plain 7 per cent, the latter being exceptional and ob- tained only by favored borrowers on first class collaterals. The early closing of the Joan market was rather a feature of the day, ac- counts having been all adjusted quite a while before Ahree o’clock. Petitions are in circulation urging ‘the passage of the billintroduced in Congress for ‘the repeal of the usury laws. Commercial paper ‘was moderately active, and the note brokers re- \port a continued large inquiry. Prime names were quoted 10 a 12 per cent discount. SOUTHERN SECURITIES FIRM, In the Southern State bonds Tennessees were Strong, and advanced to 825. As before stated, Athe inquiry from the railroads has ceased, but new buyers are found in parties who look to see the State resume interest and the bonds advance to 90895 within the next eighteen months or two years, The recent rise has also been helped by jlarge purchases to cover some venerable contracts ‘on the “short” side. The South Carolinas were jmore active and better. The South Carolina wevens, which were created under an act authoriz- jing a loan for the relief of the State Treasury: jhave been dealt in quite largely at 35. The firmer tone of the gold market induced a corresponding feeling in the government iist and led to an advance of % to 4 per cent in quotations, the disproportion of the improvement ag compared with the rally of 34 a 44 ia gold being due to the re- fusal of the government to buy bonds at the Sub- Treasury to-day, where the offerings were $666,950, at prices varying from 112.46 to 112.99, The price of gold waa taken to be 11234 when it was tn real- ity 112{—a) limitation that prevented any accept- ances, much to the disappointment of the street. The scarcity of bonds will again be noticed in the small amount offered in response to the usual adver- Uisement for PROPOSALS OF FIVR-TWENTIES. to be sold to the government. GOLD UP—112% A 112%. The advance in the foreign exchanges and the Mercantile demand for gold to settle foreign ac- counts at the close of the year led to a reaction in gold from 1123; to 112%, the rise being assisted by the discovery of a greater “short interest’ in the market than was believed tocxist. At the same time a great deal of long goldis steadily coming on the market, owing to the apprehension of an ap- proaching decline, and yesterday nearly $5,000,000 was disposed of for parties whghad been holding it & good while, but were now satisfied that the time tor a rise in gold had gone by. The Sub-Treasury paid out $92,000 on account of interest and $29,000 on account of redeemed five-twenties. The Eu- Tropean steamer took out $103,000in silver. The course of the market is shown in the table: 112% 4 P.M. In the gold loan market the rates ranged from 4 per cent tor carrying to 1-32 for borrowing. The operations of the Gold Exchange Bank were as fol- lows :— Gold cleared.. Gold balances, Currency balances. STOCKS ACTIVE AND STRONG. There was a larger volume of business at the Stock Exchange and a wider distribution of the speculative interest, the day’s transactions in- cluding a more active movement in a number of heretofore neglected features, such as Wabash, Harlem and the inexpensive Boston, Hartford and Erie. The chief feature continued to be Pacific Mail, which fluctuated between 774 and 80, and acted very much ag if tne clique were really en- deavoring to buy it “this time.’ A rumor has pre- vailed recently that the company contemplated the issue of a mortgage of $2,000,000 to procure means to replace the steamers lost so plentilully the past six months, instead of encroaching upon the ample cash ASSETS IN THE TREASURY for that purpose; but the story has no foundation in fact, a8 no proposition of the kind has been brought before the directors, nor has there been any meeting of the directors for the past few weeks to entertain such a proposition. The rumor about a Mortgage was started in the interest of the clique to help them depress the stock, and was at first given out as aconfidential “point” for the ‘betrayal of the unsophisticated. It is said in some quarters that Stockwell and Smith are quite alarmed for the success of their allied venture on the “short” side, especially as the mass of out- siders and professionals are beginning to think the stock has strack “hard-pan” and are buying ac- cordingly. The renovation of HANNIBAL AND ST. JO caused a further smart rise in that stock, the com- mon shares selling ap to 4744 and the preferred at 691s. Afresh spurt in Western Union Telegraph, which took it to 79, was credited to purchases by the numerous “shorts,” who had sold in the apprehension of a decline to follow the tabooing of the company by Congress and the Postmaster General. The children and youth’s speculative favorit2—Boston, Hartford and Erile— advanced to 914 and is on the cards for an advance to 20, (E. & 0. E.) The latest movement of the day was in Wabash, which ‘“Jakey” has watched very carefully all the time for Mr. Drew, and is now on the programme for a brilliant speculation in connection with the completion of the Canada Southern Railroad and an independent connection with Buffalo and New York, HIGHEST AND LOWEST PRICES. WEDNESDAY, Dec. 11—6 P. M. Quietude was still the most conspicuous charac- teristic in commerce to-day, and the buoyant tone which but recently obtained in the merchandise markets has, in numerous instances, given place to depression. Quite a number of the leading articles of commerce are either lower or have a downward tendency. The export movement has been re- stricted of late by the scarcity of tonnage, and this diMculty still obtains, though, perhaps, not to 80 great an extent as it did some days ago. Itisa noteworthy fact, however, that the scarcity ot freight room has not tn tnis instance been followed by the usual advance in the rates of freight and charter. On 'Change to-day flour was still dull and heavy, while wheat was dull and nearly nominal. There was hardly any export demand, andin order to sell to any extent lower prices would have had to be accepted, while, on the other hand, purchases to any extent could not have been made except on the basis of full previous prices. Corn was quiet, the extreme prices demanded checking sales. Whiskey was again armer under light receipts, There was almost no market for pork, which remained nominal. Lard was in im- roved demand, Lp = market was much nes ries quiet, but prices nominally seady. Transactions in Property Light—The Fifth Avenue Hotel Fire the Main Topic=The Proprietors Condemned— More Hotels Needed, but Should Be Fireproof=An Important Sa! or Fifth Avenue Property—Legal Sales on *Change—The Riverside Park Improve- ment and Effect on West Side Property. As predicted on Tuesday, the assembly on 'Change yesterday was not so large as on the previous day, owing to the unattractiveness of the sales, which consisted mainly of bonds, stocks and corporation shares, The general topic of conversation was the mel- ancholy occurrence at the Filth Avenue Hotel, where so many lives were needlessly sacrificed, The owners, projectors and builders of the hotel came in for a great share of blame in the disaster, and the action of the proprietors relative to the poor victims by sending the remains to the Morgue was commented upon in unmeasured terms, Real estate men are bitterly opposed to tar and gravel roof, and attribute the spread of the fre mostly to this combustible material. The newly-projected hotels will and onght to be of fireproof material onevery floor, including the roof. Then such calamities will in future be avoided, The factis that the hotel accommoda- tions for the increasing population of this city are inadequate and must be increased. The hotels down town make room for business houses, and our caravansaries necessarily have to be located in the upper part of the city and as near the depots as possible. The daily increase of prices in real estate all over New York should be a warning to those in- tending to erect hotels to secure available sites at once. No better investment can be made. An important sale was made yesterday by Messrs. V. K. Stevenson & Son, of 11 Pine street, being the high stoop four story brown stove house 609 Filth avenue, the northeast corner Forty-ninth street, owned by Dr. C. H. Gardner, to Mr. Charles F, Chickering for $130,000, At the Real Estate Exchange Muller, Wilkins & Co., besides disposing of large amounts of stock, bonds, &c., sold the annexed property by order of A.
