Ma a The closing quotation for gold on Saturday after- Doon Was 113% a X, TUR BANK STATEMENT. The weckly statement of the associated banks is unfavorable, owing chiefly to a decrease of about three and a half millions of legal tenders, the loss of which is not readily explained and has given rise to a surmise that the Treasury is quietly with- drawing the four anda half millions of greenbacks issued last month, The Western money markets are more active, but the outflow of currenoy so far has not been large enough to account for the loss, At the same time there is an increase in specie of Moderate amount and a small contraction of loans. ‘The decrease in deposits is as irregular as the rest ofthe banking movement for the week. Despite these drawbacks the banks are yet in a strong position for this season, and continue to hold A SURPLUS OF ABOUT FOUR MILLIONS in excess of the required reserve. The statement compares with its predecessor as follows :— Sunray, Nov, 10—10 P. M. The events of the past week in Wall street will have but little interest for the ordinary reader of the money article in view of the prominence gud- denly given to what willbe the immediate future Of the markets in tic cinergency which has arisen ‘with the GREAT FIRE IN BOSTON. Natarally the imind runs back te make compar- ison with the situation a year ago, when the great fire at Chicago gave us a prototype of the present extraordinary situation. Indeed the repe- tition of history has seldom been so closely ilustrated. It was » Saturday night when the Chi- ago conflagration commenced, but it was not un- til Monday, midway of the hours devoted to bust- neas, that the tiamense destruction of property began to operate upon the markets. At nine o'clock gold was offered at 11414. THE FOREIGN MARKETS have been active and excited the past week, the commotion commencing in Germany with an onslaught upon some of the less favored American rallroad bonds and extending to London, where the dread of a drain of specie from England to -Germany in payment of the French indemnity led to a sudden raising, on Saturday, of the bank rate to seven per cent, while the strect rate for money the same day was quoted at7a8spercent. The suspension of the London agency of the Paris firm of Bowles Brothers & Co., a banking house of American origin, was announced by cable at the cloge of the week. THE GOLD MARKET ‘was directly affected by the foreign news just summarized, and the price advanced from 111% SaTuRDAY, Nov. 9—6 P.M. The trade movement during the week has been slow, having been retarded by the general elec- tion of Tuesday, which was held asa close holiday in commercial marts, while on Monday and Wed- nesday there was but a feeble attempt to do busl- ness anywhere, the Presidential election absorb- ing the undivided attention of the mercantile public everywhere during the latter part of the week. The fuctuations in the gold premium acted as a decided hinderance to commercial enterprises, and to-day, Saturday, the usual dullness incident to the closing day of the week was intensified by the unexpected and ap- parently causeless advance in the gold premium to nearly 14 per cent, in view of which business in many commodities was brought to a complete stand, The export movement was interrupted by the unsettied condition of gold and exchange, but it was hoped that at the expiration of a few days, at the worst, matters will have returned to their on Monday to 118% on Saturday, the | normal condition and business once more have be- small advance being due to the absence | come comparatively active. On ‘Change flour was of @ “short” interest which had been | exceedingly dull. Wheat was also dull and closed generally closed out by a ‘‘squeeze” in cash gold on Monday and was not renewed. The clique were, in fact, so heavily eaddied with gold that they were compelled to pay the full market price for money to have their balances carried over Saturday, THE MONEY MARKET. The money market was casier, taking its course during the week, the business in call loans on Mon- day having been at7 per cent currency to 7 per cent gold, and the last rate Saturday 6 per cent, with an intermediate fuctuation to as low as 4 per cent. The supply of commercial paper is still pressing, and rates range from 9 to 12 per cent for prime names, with very little doing under 10 per cent except at bank. Very naturally the advance of the Bank of England rate of discount caused an ADVANCE IN FORKIGN EXCHANGE, and sight biils are now above the specie snipping point. The sixty day rate continues a little below that standard, The following were the closing heavy, notwithstanding the advance in gold, which it was hoped would enable holders to realize an advance. Corn was dull. Whiekey was excited and decidedly higher, the market being “swept clean,” and closing buoyant at the advance. Pork was quiet, though firm, while lard was the turn dearer. Cotton was 1-l6c. 3¢e. per Ib. easier for both spot and future, The mar- ket for raw sugar was excited and closed considerably better. Petroleum was more sought after ata decided advance in prices.
