About ten days since Stephen D. Hicks, @ young gman, whose father does an extensive business at No. 219 Greenwich street, while under great mental excitement, caused perhaps by indulging to excess $m alcoholic stimulants, swallowed a dose of arsenic re the purpose of terminating his existence, which iad become burdensome to lim. One of the poiice surgeons was called to attend young Hicks, who emed to do well, and for a time strong aa were entertained of his recovery, at, pein taken suddenly worse on Saturday eveniny ied soon afterwards. Previous to his death, Mr, Hicks told some members of his family and also the doctor that he had swallowed the | poleon in @ glass of lager beer, but did not say here or the circumstences which prompted the act. Mr. Hicks told the doctor that he had carried ‘the poison in his pocket for six weeks; and all ef- forts to learn where he procured tne arsenic proved unavailing.
