THE ELECTION HOLIDAY, ‘The Legislature, at the session of last Winter, made the day of the State election a legal holiday, Bo that November 5 this year will be observed ac- cording}y. Weanesday, Oct. 9. vo Oct. 16. ednesday, Oct, 23. Wednesday, Oct. 30. Total. Thursday, Oct. 3. Thursday, Oct. 10... Thuruday, Oct Oct. on raday, Oct Thureday; Oct. 81; Total. $5,000,000 HOURS OF BUSINESS OF THE GOLD BOARD. The Gold Exchange, at a special meeting held to- Gay, decided to limit the time of business dally to the interval between ten o’clock A, M. and four ‘clock P. M., except on Saturdays, when the ad- journment sha'l take place atthree o’clock. Deal- fngs on the street or elsewhere before or after the hours fixed are not only devoid of legality so far a8 the Board is concerned, but punishable by fine, MONEY STRINGENT, The money market was stringent under the re- mewed application of artificial means, the clique having withdrawn a million dollars from the banks ‘on Saturday and withholding to-day all the money they could control. The lowest rate on call was 7 per cent and the highest 1-16 per cent, equivalent to nearly 23 per cent. The mquiry lasted until nearly half-past three o’clock, when the aealings closed at 1-328 1-16 per cent. The quotations for prime commercial paper ranged from 8 to 12 per cent, FOREIGN BXCHANGB ‘was dull aud heavy, and actual business was on the Dasis of 10734 for prime bankers’ sixty-day sterling and 108% for sight bills, although the leading draw- ers contrived to ask 107% 9 107%. There was con- Siderable activity in billson Paris owing to their relatively cheaper price. GOLD BTONG—113% @ 114%, The gold market was strong, under a renewal of the operations of the <lique, whose doings in the money market have been noted above. The ad- vance was helped by the continued limited pro- gramme of Treasury gold sales and by a London espatch stating that Spain was about to demand indemnity for her losses by American filibusterism 4m Cuba, making her appeal to a court of the Euro- pean nations, after the manner of the Geneva ar- bitration settlement of the Alabama claims. This atory had less effect abroad than at home; for sub- sequent to its receipt here it was announced that our bonds in London had closed at an advance of 34 8 34 per cent, The course of the market is shown in the table: In the goid loan market the rates ranged from Mat to 3-32 for borrowing. The operations of the Gold Exchange Bank were as follows :— $41,587,000 . 008,069 ‘ Zorsiei2 ry p eter 26,000 én account of Interest and $4,000 on account of redeemed five- twenties, and cancelled $790,000 of the called three per cents, on which interest ceased to-day. GOVERNMENTS STRONG. The government bond market was strong and Bigher, prices advancing % a ¥ per cent in sympa- thy with the upward movement in gold, which in- fuence was furthermore helped by the rise of five- twentics in the foreign market, The activity of Money repressed, however, the buoyancy which would otherwise have undoubtedly attended this Bdvance, and the market left off quiet at the im- provement as follows:—United States currency sixes, 112 a 11255; do., 1881, registered, 114 a 114.45 Go., d0., do., coupon, 115% a 115%; do. five-twen- ies, registered, May and November, 114% a 1144;; do. do., 1862, coupon, do., 114% a 114%; do., do., 1864, do., do., 11495 @ 114%; do. do., 1865, do., do., 11534 & 11534 ; do. do., 1867's, registered, January and Foly, 11855 & 113% ; do, do., 1865, coupon, do., 1183; a 118%; do. do,, 1867, do., do., 113% a 114; do. do., 1668, do,, do., 114 a 114'¢ ; do. ten-forties, registered, 107% @ 108%; do, do., coupon, 107% a 108%; do, Gives, 1881, registered, 110% @ 111; do. do., do,, coupon, 110% a 111. THE RAILROAD BONDS, The printed list of the Stock Exchange appeared $o-day with the recent numerous additions to the tall, The new Delaware, Lackawanna and Western vonvertible loan was quoted 99a 102, Buyers of this security should refuse all bonds numbered ever 3,000, a8 the original loan was limited to 3,000,000 in the advertisements, but increased to 000,000 after the bids were opened, The Board hae ruled, therefore, that the bonds only of the first amount are “A GOOD DELIVERY,” The foliowing were the bids for the railroad bonds at the regular call ;— New York €en t's, 1883, Kew York Con Ox re,. ks me : A ieyeon Jew York Com we sub, th Del Lack ai about steady. The “bear” clique held almost undisputed control of the stock market from the opening, and under their manipulation pu ioe declined, the depression at one time being ag muchas & a i per cent for some of the leading stocks, although the decline generally was hardly more than 3¢ per cent, The chief business was in Pacific Mail, which declined from 7444 to 73%, but raliied eventually to 74. The cligue contented themselves with keeping money worth apmall consideration instead of repeating their usual pian of exacting extravagant rates, the effect of which has been unusually to excite a stub- born opposition to them more injurious than if the speculative sentiment were allowed to be worked upon by HOMEOPATHIC DOSES of tight money. Besides which extreme rates | tempt the shipment hither of money {from Boston, Philadelphia and other cities. The caimer and cooler manner in which the cliqne have gone to ‘work has been rather a feature of the opening of the week, and has disconcerted their opponents nota little. They are, however, still heavy lesers by their recent transactions, and some sales of Pittsburg to-day at adecline from 8814 to 874g are believed to be a further inroad upon those ‘salted- down” investments which they had been holding against a rainy day and are now compelled to part with for money. One of the “bears” in Panama settled on Saturday at a loss of $25,000. He sold a thousand shares at the equivalent (making allow- ance for the dividend) of about 121 and covered at 146, A BET of $6,000 was made the same day that Pacific Mail would sell at 100 before it sold at 70. Erie went off to 4734, Insympathy with the London market and the general heaviness here. The approach of the Western elections has a tendency to check busi- ness in the stock market and in Wall street gener- ally, especially as the prospects of the success of the administration (in the eyes of Wall street) are not so clear since Mr. Greeley has retracted his de- mand for immediate specie payments and the un- settling of the chances of Hartran{ft in Pennsyl- vania, HIGHEST AND LOWEST PRICES. M, ‘The commercial cutlook continues to be of the most promising character, notwithstanding the fact that the scarcity of money and high rates of discount operate as direct hindrances to mercantile enterprise. The export movement continues without visible abatement, while in some commodities—notably breadstuffs, &c.—the move- ert is on the increase, The carrying trade has seldom been #o brisk or the rates of freight so remunerative, and yet the shipments of the leading articles are large and steaaily increasing. The — petro- leu trade, which hag been languishing — for somo time past, shows decided signs of recupera- tion, and vessels suitable for this business have come to be in fair request once more, and unless prevailing indl- cations prove delusive we shall soon be called upon to chronicle a more active export movement in this leading article of ‘chandise than we have seen for some time past. The movement in grain received @ fresh impetus to-day, and, notwithstunding ireight room was scarce and dear, purchases of both wheat and corn were on a liberal scale and at full prices. Corn in particular was freely purchased, both on the spot and in advance of arrivals, at very full prices, There were purchasers for November delivery at higher prices than had before been paid; buyers thereby evincing continued confidence inthe future. It is abundantly demonstrated that the grain crops of Europe are deficient, and a good export movement hence 1s accordingly confidently reck- oned upon, and the more sagacious among the exporters have already set about making good the deflclency of the European harvest by lMberal shipments from this side; taking advantage of the comparatively low prices current, particularly of corn, which is going forward in large quantities. The movement in provisions coniinues very slow, though on the whole prices are very well sustained. On the street there Was @ good business, and the commercial outlook is be- cowning more and more promising with the lapse of every succeeding week. In groceries there was no movement of particular importance, yet the market for most arti- cles remained very firm. Petroleum took a decided up- ward stride to-day, on account of the cessation of opera- tions at the oil producing districts, they having stopped operations for thirty days. In the naval store trade the inquiry was principally for spirits of turpentine and the market was very strong. Corrox.—The movement in spot cotton was fairly active for exvort at about former prices, though !f anything the market ruled in buyers’ tavor throughout the day and closed decidedly weak. The annexed quotations show no changes as compared with Saturday's tigures, Future deliveries were aio easier and ye. per Ib. lower. The sales eum w) lows i T-Day.
