Wheat was wore active but easier, and corn was unchanged, COMPARISON OF THE IMPORTS. The following shows the imports, exciusive of specie, at the port of New York for the week end- ing September 23 and since the beginning of the year:— 1870, 1871. 1872, Dry goods. $3,220,418 $3,477,944 $3,250,871 General mdse. 8,133,581 6,031,355 5, 820,728 Totalfor week. $6,353,999 $8,509,209 $9,071,529 Prev. reported.. 211,465,482 277,918,699 317, 120,558 Bince Jan, 1...$217,819,481 $280,427,998 $526,192 26, 192,152 MONEY EASY, ‘The morey market was easy, but irregular. The early dealings were at 6 a 7 percent, borrowers paying 6 per cent quite freely, and many lenders succeeding in getting the full legal interest. As the day wore on there was a gradual relaxation, and the rate declined to 3 per cent before the hour of closing the banks, the final quotation being 3 a 4per cent. Commercial paper is neglected and hardly quotable as yet, although some prime names may be had occasionally at a discount of 1 per cent ® month. ADVANCE IN FOREIGN EXCHANGE. ‘There was a sharp recovery in the rates for foreign exchange, and the leading bankers ad- vanced their rates for sterling to 1077; (against 10734 on Saturday) for sixty-day an! 1091¢ for sight bills, cable transfers being done at 10934. The busi- negs in sixty-day sterling was quite active at 10754 and 107%. GOLD STRONG—118% a 1141f. The gold market was heavy at the opening of Dusiness and the price declined from 11354 to 11334. Here the downward movement was arrested by the sudden hardening of the foreign exchanges nd by heavy purchases of the clique, who are credited with intending to make a new “corner” in cash gold as a piece of retaliation upon the Ex- change place “bears’’ who are helping Daniel Drew in his cornering of Erie. As a consequence of these Influences the price advanced to 1141, as much as 1-64 being bid at the close for the use of gold to- morrow, although the closing rates to-day were 4 Sper cent for carrying. The Sub-Treasury paid out $24,000 on account of interest and $1,0000n account of redeemed five-twenties. The course of the market is shown in the table:. +4 iva las In the gold loan market the rates ranged from 5 per cent for carrying to fat for borrowing. The operations of the Gold Exchange Bank were as fol- lows :— ld cleared... old balances. Currency baiances. oe GOVERNMENTS FInM. From January 1 toSeptember 16 the earnings show an increase of $450,833, ‘The receipts of the St. Louis, Kansas City and Northern Ratiway Company for the third weck in September were $56,149, an increase of $3,100 over 1871. $68, Bieened 090 Tesisro4 THE RAILROAD BONDS, The following were the bids for bonds:— New York Cen 6's, 1883. 925% Rew yore oan Os, "87.6 2 the railroad Del, Lack & W Ist m. The stock market was dull and heavy, with, in the afternoon, a weak feeling and a decline of 3 a % per cent. The unfavorable bank statement of Saturday and the acknowledged povguyty of most of the city banks check the outside speCulative senti- ment, and doubtless will continue to do so until the bank reserves show to better advantage. Moreover, the trinmph of the clique in getting the legal tenders for their certified checks irom the Bank of Commerce by the surren- der of that institution dampened the spirits of the “bulls,” while equatly encouraging the “bears” and other believers in a stringent money market the rest of the Fall season, It was feared also that revenge for the revival of the Erie “corner? would stimu- late a fresh locking-up movement, and that the immediate future would witness a re-enactment of the extraordinary doings of last week. The Erie “corner was closer than ever, the cash stock be- ing worth at one time 3 per cent more than the stock deliverable the regular way. The lowest price was 50%, from which there was an advance to 6445 cash, ‘The active leader in to-day’s “corner” was Danicl Drew, who called in the stock 80 genorally that the “shorts” were un- able to make their deliveries. When a quarter past two o'clock arrived he had the stock bought in “ander the rule” for the account of the defaulting brokers, and about 18,000 shares were bought in tor cash during the remainder of the interval to the close of banking hours, A great deal of confusion prevailed as to the interpretation of the rule that parties interested in such transactions shall not be allowed to buy or sell directly or indirectly, The point was next raised and settled that no “cash” ‘transactions “under the rule’? could be made after three o’ciock. The price of Erie hereupon dropped to 51, but Mr. Drew’s brokers came in suddenly and ran it up to 53%, with the very evident design of preventing the “shorts” getting stock which they could turn over to their colleagues to-morrow, and thereby satisfy the “cash” contracts of this afternoon. Uncle Dantel was quick to see this little ‘“‘geem”’ of “the boys,’? ana he stopped it as soon as possible, Rock Island was exceptionally strong on the an- nouncement of @ semi-annual dividend of 4 per cent, payable October 23, New Jersey Central de- clined to 1003g and Lackawanna to 983g on the de- cision of the “consolidated” directory to omit a dividend for the current quarter. Possessors of the obnoxious style of tiles who endeavor to “rush the season” will be summer-aly dealt with and there will, doubtless, be agreat fall in felt. As there are many brokers who insist upon wearing white hats to a later sea- son of the year, and as the “Regulators” are inflexi- ble in their determination to “call in” such hats, the difference of opinion between the two parties generally leads toan amusing, if not exciting, serics of combats, the scene being at times re- markably entertaining. The public who desire to witness the proceedings will find an excellent standpoint in the gallery of the Stock Exchange, entrance on Wall street. Meantime the official an- nouncement has been printed and publicly posted thoughout the Board and over the street, as fol- lows:— NOTIOR is hereby given that white hats are called in on and after Monday, September 30.
