On ’Change to-day wheat and flour were quiet and about steady. The cotton market was easier. THE COTTON MOVEMENT—THE COTTON CROP OF 1871-72. ‘The receipts of cotton at all the ports for the past ‘week were 13,554 bales, against 4,461 bales the pre- vious week. The total receipts since September 1, 1872, are 13,654 bales, against 9,137 bales for the cor- Tesponding period of the previous year, showing an increase in the present crop of 4,417 bales. The ex- ports from all the ports for the week were 2,055 bales, against 10,195 bales for the same date last year. ‘The stock at all the ports is 64,401 bales, against 95,390 at the corresponding date in 1871. The estimates of the cotton crop for the year just closed are even smaller than those made earlier in the season, when it was thought the yield would not exceed 3,100,000 bales. According to one authority—the Commercial Chronicle—the total crop was only 2,974,351 bales, @ result obtained by the following calculations, the figures being com- pared at the same time with the crop of 1870-71:— Year ending Sept. i 1870-71. 1871-72, Receipts ra the shippin, rie, bal ase py "2,732,286 4,082,154 ada shipments “irom nessee, &c., direct to manu- FACLUFETB......0+eeeeer eens 065 228,093 Total + 2,854,351. 4,261,077 Manufactured South, “not in- cluded in above.. 91,240 Total cotton crop for the year, bales.. sis seecees 2,074,351 4,352,317 The estimate of the New York Cotton Exchange ‘will doubtless be ready some time during the ensu- ing week. THE IMPORTS OF THE WEEK. ‘The total imports of foreign goods at this port during the past week were $8,969,052, made up of $3,365,385 of dry goods and $5,603,667 of general merchandise. The amount of ary goods marketed ‘Was $4,051,509. MONEY 4 A 5 PER CENT. Money was easy and after being quoted 5a 6 per cent closed at 4a5 per cent, with the business of the day at 5 and 4 percent. Prime paper was dull at about 8 per cent discount. Foreign exchange was weak and lower. The leading bankers low- ered their rates another one-eighth per cent, ac- tual business in sterling being at 108% a 1033¢ for Bixty-day and 109 a 1094¢ for sight bills. THE BANK STATEMENT. The bank statement was unfavorable, in conse- quence chiefly of a loss of nearly three millions of specie, attributable to the heavy customs payments of the week, which amounted to four millions. The decrease in legal tenders has been, considering the season of the year, quite light. The deposits have fallen off nearly five and a half millions. The statement compares with its predecessor as fol- Fe 31, Septemer 7. GOLD FIRMER—112% A 113}y. The gold market was firmer with an advance to 113, a8 @ consequence of the greater scarcity of cash gold and of the loss of specie in the bank statement. The Sub-Treasury paid out $86,000 on account of interest, and $12,000 on account of re- deemed five-twenties. The market was dull at the advance. STOCKS STRONG AND UNSETTLED. The stock market was strong in sympathy with New York Central, which fluctuated between 99% and 100%, closing at 100. The early advance to 100% brought out heavy sales to realize, under which and the first impressions of the bank state- ment the whole market became heavy and de- clined. Areaction to 1003 in Central induced a general recovery and the market closed strong again. The rise in Central late in the day was due to large purchases by the “shorts” through fear of scrip dividend in the interval to Monday morning. The other changes were not of moment outside of Pacific Mail and Western Union, and were mostly for the better. In the Southern State bonds the only feature wasa rally of one per cent in the South Carolinas, the new July ponds advancing to 24, HIGHEST AND LOWEST PRICES, The following table shows the highest and lowest prices of the principal stocks during the day bho Lowest. OFFICE OF FISK @ HATCH, Bankers and Financial Agenis of the Chesapedke and Ohio Railroad Company, New Your, Sept. 9, 1872. By direction of the President and Directors of the Chesapeake and Oho Railroad Company we offer, tor proposals, all the remaining balance of their First Mort- gage Six Per Cent Gold Bonds, now amounting to $2,023,700. Proposals must be accompanied by a deposit of five per cent, and will be received up to and includ- ing Monday, the 16th inst., the directors reserving the right to reject any proposals which it may not be for the interests of the company to accept. The five per cent de. osit will be applied toward the payment, in case of ac- cepted bids, and returned to those whose proposals are not accepted. The President of the Company, Mr. C. Among them are the fol- lowing well known New York merchants :— Messrs, A. A, LOW, WM. H, ASPINWALL, JONAS G, CLARK, ~ DAVID STEWART, WM, WHITERIGHT, This road will extend from Richmond to the heart of the Great West, at a point on the Ohlo River 313 miles be- low Pittsburg, where it will at once connect with 12,000 miles of river navigation, and soon by connecting roads with the whole great system of Western railroads, thus giving ashort, direct and easy grade outlet to the mil- hons of people and inexhaustible products of the West to the Atlantic Coast, and in return furnishing them with the manufactures of the East, and cheap coal and cheap iron from along the line of the road. Itstraffic must be ‘immense, It will cost, fully equipped, upwards of $80,000,000. Of the whole length of the line, 427 miles, at this date 360 miles are completed; the grading is near- ly done on the remainder, the iron is being rapidly laid, and during November next it Is expected trains will run through to the Ohio River. The Western end, 200 miles, will be nearly all laid with stee) rails, the bridging all iron and the masonry first class in every respect. The total amount of these Bonds is $15,000,000. The amount sold by us from the dato of bringing out the loan 4s $14,489,600. ag ‘The amount now offered by us is made up as follows :— Unsold balance of loan a: $510,400 Repurchased and received in | benture Bonds of the Com Eeaving balance subject to proposals...
