Departure of All the Fleet for the South Shetland Isles from New London—De= scription of the First Steam Sealer that Has Ever Left the United States—The Aggregate Tonnage of the Fleet and Other Interesting Details. On Saturday the brig Nile, of 300 tons, will leave New London for the South Shetland Isles, to join the other vessels comprising the great seal expedition which has been organized in this city for the cap- tare of seal skins. The South Shetland Isles are situated in the neighborhood of Cape Horn, and at about ten days’ sail from it. The Nile is the last and tenth vessel engaged in the undertaking, and strong hopes are enter- tained of realizing handsome returns from the capture of seals and seaciephants. It may be re- membered that small New London whale ships | Fie pr $50,000 and $60,000 each last year from roduce of their capture at the islands just mentioned. The following is the list of the vessela which have already put to sea:—Schooners Emma Jane, 86 tons; Florence, 56 tons; Flying Fish, 75 tons; Franklin, 119 tons; Golden’ West, 144 tons; Simmons, 80 tons, and bark Roman, 360 tons, the largest. of the fleet. ‘THE FIRST STRAM SEALER Among the vessels which made a splendid haud last year was the schooner Francis Allyn, of 107 tons, belonging to Messrs. Williams & Haven, of New London. Upon her return home she was sent to the Delamater Iron Works in this city and fitted up with an auxiliary steam engine, whiten occupies: thirteen feet of her length, and which will enable her to move quickly from island to island in quest of seals, and wili enable her to progress against baMing breezes or when becalmed, and will further ve ier facilities for trying blubber, a part of she will use for fuel when her coal is ex- nded, " TOTAL TONNAGE OF THE VESSELS. ‘The total tonnage of the vessels which have left New Bedford (including the Nile) is about 1,500 tons, io wiueh has to be added another handred, the ton: nage of a vessel which has left Stonington, equip- ped by a wealthy New York farrier, The vessel | are eXpected back within ten months from the date of their sailing. e SLAUGHTERED ON THE RAIL, A marble cutter named William Wall, while at- tempting to jump from the half-past ten o'clock passenger train, near the Hoboken depot, om Wednesday night, fell under the wheels and waa killed instantly, He resided with his mother at the pend of Ny ot «i Granf streets, He Beas el wo years of age, and perished in his fal attempt contrary to the couductor’s orders.
