The Actors’ Market-Place—How They Aro Bought and Sold and the Plaint of the Song and Dance Man. The Coming Triumphs of the Sock and Buskin. The last managerial engagement is signed; the halls of the Grand Central are deserted; the rooms ol the dramatic agents are no longer the point of attraction for managers and actors; there's a hurly-burly of preparation and a winging home of Summer birds from Europe and the watering places; the ceaseless din of hammers mingles with the by no means dulcet tones of the stage manager, who is conducting a rehearsal, and flaring posters on every side announce the glad news that the season is about to begin. Let us take a peep at the prepa- tions going on in this grand opera house for the pro- duction of a gorgeous spectacle, in which there isan olla poarida of everything that the stage can boast of—opera, ballet, pantomime, extravaganza, spec- tacle, comedy, &c. There is not much, if any enjoyment in witnessing a rehearsal beyond the mere gratification of the curtosity of the uninitiated. An extremly disagree- able odor of fresh paint greets us on entering by the stage door. Crossing tie stage “what a scone | of confusion is before us! It looks agif chaos had come again, or like the ruins of some old building which the wind, with one blast from his lusty lungs, had blown over. Scenes, wings, borders, carpenters’ benches and tools He aroundin ad- | mirable disorder. The stage manager 1s sitting beside a small table near the footlights expounding the arcana of the text to a half dozen members of the company; @ group of ballet girls, looking very unromantic and seedyin old calico gowns, are being marshalled under one of the proscenium boxes by the dark-visaged . maitre de ballet; the gamins who are to figure in | the monkey scene indulge in somersaults | and other pranks; the chef qorchestre ia in the | green room wrestling with-a refractory chorus, | and ruby-faced ladies of Hibernian descent are | scrubbing, dusting and washing in every direction. If we dive into the depths beneath the stage we find machinery of the most ponderous and seem- ingly complicated kind, but so cunningly arranged that one man.can do the work that twenty would be required to do by the old method, Here are wheels and levers for sinking or elevating the heaviest scenes, traps in abundance, and a perfect labyrinth of passages, in which the uninitiated would soon lose themselves. Emerging from this labyrinth and mounting the broad (in other the- atres you can hardly squeeze your wy through) stairway leading to the ‘‘files’’ we encounter a half @ozen painters’ frames, with a small army of artists brushing away for dear life. Mounting still higher we find ourselves in an extensive apartment, which contains as much cordage and rigging as an old line-of-battle ship. Hore the ‘flies’ are re- vealed in all their bewildering variety, and none | but a practised eye can evolve anything like order out of such chaos. Another flight of stairs and we are among the catpenters’ shops, and, leaning over the magniticent dome, an indescrivable coup d'wit is unfolded. Descending to the stage we find the Property rooms and the sanctum of the costumer crammed full of the most heterogeneous articles. Heads of insects, armors, rich satin suits, royal Tegalia, peasant dresses and monkey skins are lit- tered around. We escape from this palace of wonders deeply impressed with the responsibility, superintends Buch a little world of extraordinary | interest. There has been a remarkable change of late years in the prospects of the stage. The public are be- coming gradually weaned from those idols that have been the reproach of music and the drama And an insult to all intelligent and educated minds, Mere sensation, unaccompanied by positive merit, will receive the cold shoulder this season, and a higher standard of talent is demanded. The people ave taking @ greater interest in the stage than they have ever done before, and the theatre is now a subject of intelligent criticiam in quarters where one would scarcely look for it. Even politics no longer has @ prominence before amusements, and the Presidential clection ceases to be a bugbear in the treasurer's office. Managers are making un- usual preparations for the coming season, | confident in the interest taken by the pub- lic in affairs of the stage, and careless, as far as their theatres are concerned, | who wins in the Presidential race, There was a | time when the stump overshadowed the stage—on Such an occasion when “Tippecanoe and Tyler too’ drew better than “Di Quella Pira,’’ and when @ bar- | becue left an opera, comedy or spectacle with empty benches, Nous avons changé tout cela, and People go the theatre nowadays with the same fidelity as to church or to the counting house or workshop. The conntry districts are also progress- ing in this respect, as a number of new theatres are springing up in towns.and villages where the sock | single passage. | nee in 1859 as Elvira in Praia tet My and buskin, the fiddle and bow or the voice of the warbler were unknown before. Preachers may declaim as they please against the stage (bet- | ter for them to try and reform some of its abuses), but the people, one and all, want tt, and close their ears against the ravings of fanaticat parsons, As long as the stage is properly conducted there can be no reasonable objection urged against it, On the contrary, it can be mado the means of do- ing more good and inculcating sounder principles of Christianity, charity and real religion than the anathemas of the parsons Who declaim against it. No more powerful engine for good or-evil exists in @ community nowadays than @ theatre, anda salu- ip} which will remove from it ¢ tionable, Will make it all that ‘The revolution which took place last season im music Is still In progress, {1 was on a acale of grandeur suoh as could Scarcely be hoped for by the most sanguine lover of the divine art. The season Of I871-72' seemed almost ondiess in at- traction’. Opera tn every shape and dialect, com certs Innumerable and oratorio afforded the peo- ple of New York such & sumptuous feast that many supposed that satiety would be the consequence: and that @ reaction would ensue, But thetr tite has only been tho more sharpened, and thoy look forward with more cagerness than ever nefore to the prospects of the fall season, Even the few redeeming features of the Boston Jubilee—Strauas, the French, English and German representa- tive bands and Mme. Peschka-Leutner—were gladly welcomed here, as if there had not been an uninterrupted succeasion of mustea. attractions for ten months. The people have alse become critical and chary. of their praise and patronage where there 1s an evident lack of mertt. European artists are astonished to find here dis cerning audiences that will not be carried away by the more glitter of a name, but which demand un- dovbted tment before they accord the endorsement required of thems To be sure, our public are toe much tn the habit of forgetting criticilam after they have once given the required endorsement to an artist, and anscrupulous managers are but too ready to take advantage of this supinencas. The sharp scalpel of honest criticiam is the only-posaible weapon to keep artists ad managers up to the’ standard of excellence demanded by ait intelligent people, ITALIAN OPERA, The operatic prospects for the season are excéed- jngly brilliant. Messrs, Maretzek and Jarrett wilt commence their season st the Academy of Music” on September 29 with “L’Africaine.” The com-~ pany consists of the following artists :—Prime donne soprani, Mme. Pauline Lucca (Baroness Von Rhaden), Miss Clara Louise Kellogg, the firat of American fayorites; Mile, Rosina Lavetlie, from the Grand Opera, Paris (this lady has for years eung roles like those of {nes in “L'Africaine,” Isabela in “Robert,” the Queen in.“Les Huguenots,” an@ was the favorite Filina in “Mignon”). Kellogg, during her last brilliant season in London, sang with him in “Linda.” He was also the main attraction in Cherubini’s “Due Giornate."’ Abrugnedo, tenor di Jorza, is @ Spaniard by birth and about thirty. years of age. When a child he received his first © lessons in music from Roncont. It ts singular that he now mects his old master in the same com- pany. First comes the famous prima donna who has so long been the great favorite of the opera of Berlin, who occasionally delights the most critical au- diences of London and St. Petersburg to an extent’ that leads them to the most enthusiastic and rape turous demonstrations, — = A short sketch of her remarkable career will therefore, doubtiess, be very acceptabie to our readers who desire to have some acquaintance with this distinguished queen of song before she appears upon our boards.
