The financial and, of course, the industrial vitality Of France may, according to the news con- ‘veyed in our Paris telegram, be set down as an economic productive wonder, When tho war of 1870-1 came to an end, aud there arose the question of paying a large indemnity to. Germany for the expenses of a breach of she peace, the generat idea was that France was ‘nearly bankrupt on the fall of the empire, and that monetary troubles throughout Europe were to be expected from any attempt to pay thé vast sum demanded by’ Bismarck. The war ex- bn of Germany are reported officially at 278,000,000, and: her receipts from France, as figured out above, will be $1,141,015,000, The French Budget of 1872. THE ERIE FIRE. Second Day of the Investigation—Im- portant Testimony by Ex-Chief Engi- neer Coyle, A. K. Brown and the In: jured Man Nagle. The Jersey City Fire Commissioners resumed the investigation yesterday into the conduct of Chief Engineer Farrier at the late fire. Wiltiam M. Beach testified that he was misunder- stood as to the language used by him concerning the Chief when he related the conversation to a re- porter of the Standard; Mr. Wilson's evidence con- veyed the language correctly. John Coyle, ex-Chief Engineer, testified—1 was at the fire in the Erie building; observed closely the wall that fell before it fell; expressed the opinion to several persons around me that the wall was dangerous; did not give “any ‘warning to any per- son in authority because I could find none; when [ saw No.3 engine put there I knew it was a very dangerous position, and I started to find some one in authority to have that engine taken away; I met Fire Commissioner Drayton and told him that en- gine onght to be taken away immeiately; before anything could be done after that the wall had fallen. P. Did you, since the fire, say that Chief Engineer Farrier was responsible for the death of McCarthy A. I can't say positively; I may have said that if he ordered that engine there he was responsible. Q. If you were in authority there would you have ordered that engine to the place? A. I would not (emphatically). Q. Is it usnal for a sixteen-inch wall fifteen feet high to fail? A. Oh, yes, sir; [ would not have placed that engine there under any circumstances when I saw that wall in danger of falling. A. K. Brown was next examined—I was at the fire in Provost street when McCarthy was killed; I was standing just opposite him; I remarked that the wall was » dangerous one; | stated to several persons standing near me that I would not go in there under any circumstances; saw the wall tremble fat to ie before it. fell; several persons q cated when v the saw it giving wal s Mecort.y turned his head a ehen te heard the Bbe"ting and looked Lip tO Hed w allots was abont; the wall fell in a solid mass ; with bricks.
