Ex-Justice ‘Voorhies conductd the case for the people, and Judge Troy appeared for the prisoner, After sparring and indulging tn personalities for three houra, the Court stopped the counsel by sending the prisoner before the Grand Jury, A Child Starved by Its Parents. It was discovered by the police of the Second precinct yesterday that Mary Jane Harkins, a child four years old, and residing with {ts parents at 68 Adams street, had been starved to death by their Megiect, The parents of the child are both . @issipated, and allowed it to die from want, while they spent all the money they could Cn Senger of for rum. ‘ihe child had been in the Kings county Dursery until three wecks ago, when her mother tok her out, and since that tims n pected to pro- vide jor her.’ ‘The mother of the child left the honse yesterdi and has not as yet rturned, The father Zntered just ‘as his child Was dying, and was too much under the influence of liquor to have any feel- ing for his offspring. — Looking After, the Saloon Keepers. The Police Commissioners have issued further orders in regard to the sale of liquor on Sunday. They are determined if possible to entirely sup- presa the sale of it, Their instructions to the com- manding officers are as follows :— Commanding oMeers of precincts and sub-pre- cincts will select one or more d:screet and reliable men to patiol their respective precincts on Sun- days; the men thus deta:led will dress in citizens? clothing; their duty shail be to visit all drinking saloons and drug stores where in their judgment the law is violated, and in case they discover any lquor deuler or others violating the law they will arrest the offenders immediately. Commanding officers will also direct the patrol- men on duty in the several precincts to make a re- port of all liquor dealers whose drinking saloons are kept open on Sundaye, and of all saicous where Bide doors are k »pt open for the accommodation of gh toe who enter for the purpose of obtaining in- xicating liquors, which list of names will be for- warded to these headquarters on the ed | Monday mornitig, where they wil! be consolidates by the chief clerk, B Ory of which wil! be trans- Mitted to the Board of Excise, and shall be avail- able for the information of the representatives of the press, THE DETROTIVES AND THE DIAMOND ROR. BERY, To Tur Eprror or Tur HERALD:— Dear Smr—In this morning’s HERALD there is an article about the diamond robbery that has a tendency to injure the reputation of two innocent Jadics as well as myself; s0, to avold all future mis- takes of that kind, I will give a plain statement of the facts :— On Monday afternoon, the day before'the rob- bery, I walked up Broadway with two ladies whom Ihave known for some time, and who are well known to be thoroughly respectable. We stopped ‘at our mutual friend’s store (Mr. Johnson), and everything occurred as your artistic correspondent Stated; but where the mistake occurred that caused the supposed new cine was by Mr. Johnson thinking I had been robbed that day instead of the next. When I returned to my boarding house that evening I had the diamonds, and on the next morning I had the diamonds in my hand = and looked and counted them over. I put them into my pocket and went out of the house without secing any of the inmates, and had my breakiast at @ ‘restaurant on Broad- ‘way; walked over to the New York Hotel and stood on the stoop for about fifteen minutes, waiting for et with wnom I had an engagement. After seeing him for five minutes I took the stage, missed the diamonds, and found my when I arrived opposite the City Hall. On Wednes- day Captain Irving sent for me and said he had been following up the supposed clue of this morn- ing’s HERALD, and asked me if I had been robbed on Monday. When | iniormed him it was on Tues- day he immediately saw that his men were on the ‘wrong scent, and was satisfied that the ladies in question were not in the oy tag l) degree connected with the affair, 1am confident that no woman has anything to do with it, and, furthermore, I never expect to see the diamonds in, and I'm not go- tng to trouble myseif about it any more. I've had an peels, lesson and I don’t want any more tutors t line, JEROME L. BABE, 25 Waverley place. New York, July 2 eket cut, CITY GOVERNMENT, yn’ (OF FICIAL.) Board of Assistant Aldermen.
