The Race Between the Gracie and Meta. For the past six weeks, since the sloop yacht Mace such a brilliant début at the regatta of the Brooklyn Yacht Club, there has been considerable discussion in yachting circles as to what she could 1 do in an eight-knot breeze with the famous sloop | 1 Gracie, Commodore Beling, the owner of the Meta, notwithstanding that his boat, ‘canvas and rig- ging were new and not reduced to thor- | ough racing trim, signifled that he would { be willing to sail his yacht, and upon the invitation | of Mr. Colgate a match was arranged, the terms of | which were, twenty miles to windward and return | buoy, to the norshward: and westward of ¥ pez either the | Stepping Stones and panes oyneg to Lightship or the buoy oif Sandy Hook, as the judges | i’ ye'”'same from. leeward to. windwar- | might deem fit. In order to make the race inter- | | esting and give the victor an appropriate me- mento of such an interesting event, they agreed to race fora $250 cup. ‘The match was to be sailed on July 23, and a number of gentlemen who had availed themselves of the invitation of the owners of the competing yachts to be present at the race goton board the steamer W. Tittamer at the Battery yesterday morning, shortly before nine o'clock. The morning did not look very favorable, and the chances of wind dppeared slim, so much so that an eight- knot breeze uppeared out of the question. The judges—Messrs, W. Krebs and J. M. Sawyer—how- ever, stated that the yacht owners had waived the eight-knot stipulation and they would start the yachts if there was any prospect of a fair test of | their merits. The ‘Tittamer arrived in the Horse Shoe about eleven o'clock A. M., and there she met the Meta and Gracie coming out from their anchorage, with the assistance of a light southerly breeze that was Making a gentle ripple on the face of the glassy water. The Vision and Vixen were also tacking, evidently Vein for the start, with a view | of having a private trial of what they could do with the racing yachts. The Meta had a flying jib and jib” topsail set with one spreader, giving the appearance of a square sail when going before the wind, which occasioned some consultation among the judges and resulted in its being ruled out as unconstitutional, rota ‘there Is no violation of the sailing regulations in the wayin which it was set. The race was gov- erned by the rules of the Brooklyn Yacht Club, Shortly after eleven o'clock A. M. Messrs, Ss te and Beling came on board the Tittamer, after a short talk, finding the breeze still dreshenttig they decided to make a start. The Titta- mer then started off and took up a position to the northward of buoy No. 5, paar, Hook. By this DI ‘ume there was a “ety fresh breeze from the #outh-southeast, and It lool pelle tee freshening. The preparatory whistle sounded fro! e Tittamer two | or three minutes aiter noon, and the yachts lay up | into position, and after ‘a lapse of five minutes a second whistle gave them the STARTING SIGNAL. At last, after ex-Commodore Simpson, Edward Brown, ex-Vico Commodore Clark and W. H. Johi- son came on board'the Fort Lee, the whistle, at 12:87, blew for the first class boats to make prepara- tion, The crew of the Sarah had much trouble with her gat’ topsail, and it required some time to send it up, The tide was flood. At 12h, 88m. 10s. the second whistle vlew for them to get away, and, before the wind, they went rattling on their journey. The sails of the Mystery were first to fll, and her crew, working with a will, sent a balloon Jib rattling up the stays. | The Amelia was next to follow, then the Twilight, the Sarah and the Orion last, the latter seeming to hang helpless tor a while, but she made amends for it in a short time, At 12h. 40m, 028, the third whistle warned the J class sloops to be away, and the southern e was freshening every minute. Like gre 8 they slipped forward to the work, The Sophia Emma was the first to get her nose toward Riker’s Island Point, and then the Skip Jack got around, and after her the Crombie, with the others in a bunch, the Zephyr carried away her jib and thus early in’ the race was compelled to retire. Now the Sarah, with everything apparently ship- shape on board, caught the freshening breeze and managed to get the start of the others in her class, with the Mystery second, Amelia third, Orion fourth and Twilight fitth. all of the first class cra(t took in their balloon jibs but the Twilight, whose sailing master, for some unknown reason, allowed the sail todrag—a great hindrance to her progress. The little ones also caught the increasing wind, and every now and then, to the great consternation of a ladies on board the Sire nage steamboat, would take an unpleasant ‘dip.’ Of these the So- phia Emma led, Mary Louise second, Seaman third, Crombie fourth, Skip Jack fifth and Carrie last. TO FORT SCHUYLER BUOY, with the wind on the quarter the large sloops sped merrily along, the Orion leading, with the Sarah on her weather bow and the others not far distant. All this while the rt lee had been handled to perfection, and so well was she thought of that bets were made on her winning the second rie in her class. Trouble was now had with the Sarah's jib, but before it could be reme- | died she was let up in the wind, | and thus lost much of her headway, as it was quick work with them all at this time. Under White- atone Point the wind lost its force, and during this short period the Mystery gained encouragingiy, and for a while clung prettily to the Orion, the Sarah doing well right in her wake, Out from under the lee of the land the contest became more excited, and the Orion caught the bree and took a commanding lead. The interest of the aquatic battle vow centred in the Mystery and Sarah for second place, and many shouts we raised at the sight as the Mystery held her own nicely. they could do, but the Sophia Emma lead, with the Mary Louise next. Tt was now slack water, and the yachts bowled merrily hefore the wind to the Stepping Stones buoy, where the little ones, after rounding, wonld start for home. ‘There was no further ques- tion about the Orion being the winner in her class, as she worked most effectively. But between the Sarah, who had gone to the windward of the Mystery and Amelia, the straggle was grand. So well did the | Sarah do that the Mystery was compelled to send up her topsail at 1h. 27m., but it was of no avail, asat Th. 281m. 10s, the Sarah took her wind, and this display of speed was ail the more referred to because of her (Sarah's) miserapie handling later in the race. At Hart's Island the Orion was fully twenty minutes in advance of her class, the Amelia second to the windward of the Mystery, the struggle between the two latter still goit on with great earneat- with the Sarah and Twilight to leeward, Here the Mary Annie came up irom the Harlem Club House, with Commodore Kipp, Harry Genet and others on board, who were lustily cheered. A ‘few Teutonic musicians made the air resonant with fiy-blown melodies of ancient date, and young ladies would have liked to have danced if there had been sufiicient room to perform an evolution without run’ the risk of immersion. The Jeanette passed Howe’s Point (Asto- ria) at fifteen minutes to eleven o’clock, the Kate Bulger and Sea Gull following close in her wake, When the contestants were abreast the Inebriate Asylum, on Ward’s Isiand, the breeze freshened considerably, and the white-winged craft swept over tie rippling surface of the waters like swift- sailing sea birds, The second class boats were all parallel at this epoch, each striving hard to win the Jaurel crown of victory, The leading yachts reached the South Brother at ten minutes to twelve, and though the wind was increasing they retained al their sail with true feminine pertinacity; bat, on a mdse"to CL re 4 Co.
