The weekly statement of the associated hanks proved quite unfavorable, and at a more active ‘time in the stock market might have induced con- siderabie fluctuation in prices. The surplus reserve has been impaired to the extent of pretty nearly two million dollars, owing to a loss of that amount t legal tenders and specie, The joss in legal ten- ders is about a million and a half dollars, reflecting the beginning of the temporary flow of money for the “wool clip” which is marketed between this | time and the latter end of July. This year the woo! } Interest is of much more importance than hereto- fore, on account both of the large increase in the consnmption of woo! and of the enhanced price of the commodity. The efflux of money to meet this demand is, of course, insignificant, as compared with the necessities of the wheat and cotton crops, but for a few weeks to come the requisition upon New York will be quite large, but hardiy enough to | eccasion any apprehension as to a derangement of | the money market. It may have the effect of ad- vancing the rate on call to 6 a 7 per cent, but that ‘Will doubtless be the maximum etfect, The loss in specie is not so easily explained, but in go vast a movement as occurs weekly in the metropolis a @ixcrepancy of a few hundred thonsand dollars is not of much importance, especially as the sta ment ie only an average for six days and mot a specific total for one da The banks now hold the sum of $9,726,025 reserve over and | ‘a lose for The largest | the week, in exact flew variation has been in the of loans, which show au increase of over four millions. New Yorks, June 22, 1 To THe Epivor or The HeRatp:— Your itemin this morning's paper concerning the results of the examination in tne College of the City of New York has a tendenzy, I think, to create an unjust Impression as to the success of the new commercial department. In that department there were 108 students examined, of witch forty were recommended for diplomas, instead of twenty-five out of 125, as stated in the item. This is regarded as a large propertion, under the circumstances, as the students received a stricter examination than they wouid have had if they were simply to be pro- moted to another classin the college, and each one had to exhibit evidence of good ability in all respects for entering at once upon the duties of the counting room, embracing familiarity with bookkeeping, penmanship, phonography, mathematics, &c, The percentage of students thus graduated is'as large as in our best business colleges, although the commercial cour: of the coliege contains more studies, and 1s as at a proportion 2s can be expected, go long as he course is limited, as at present, to only one year. As evidence of the gers of this new commercial department (which has been but one rin operation) the fact may be mentioned that fifths of the applicants ‘for admission to the college for the coming year have chosen the com- The forty graduates of this new department will do credit to the present enterpris- ing management of the college, and tne available members of tais and future classes will be sought after by our business men, who are always wanting young men of the right stamp to introduce to promising business positions, ©.
