THE BOSTON JUBILEE. lpn The “Hab” in an Ecstasy of Delight—The Pro- gramme of Music for the First Week—The Big Drum and the Little Drums. Boston, June 15, 1872. As the time draws near and ‘the premonitory murmurs of the great hubbub become louder and more distinct the ecstasy of the modern Athenians Brows more rapturous and intoxicating (if one may ase that expression in pious Boston). Coliseum is the object of every one’s gaze, and all streets leading to it are crowded with delighted denizens of jority belonging to the spectacled fraternity. never could understand why so many you meet ere wear glasses, unless it is on account of the diMcuity of seeing their way through the crooked ‘The same reason has been given for the existence of the Prohibitory law, as the authorities think that a short walk in the principal thorough- fares is enough to make one’s head dizzy without spirituous stimulants. It has been kindly advised that the piano and artist be mounted on a small platform on wheels and drawn slowly about the Coliseum, 80 as to give the entire audience an opportunity to hear, Meanwhile the work goes on, thousands of applications are being made at the overcrowded hotels for rooms, and rehearsals are Lge eayn going on. The principal foreign artists have al- ready arrived. A Grand Procession to be Formed To- Morrow. Boston, June 15, 1872. Arrangements have been perfected for a grand public reception of the German, English and Wash- ington Marine hands, At eight o’clock on Monday morning the Executive Committee of the Jubilee, the various German, English and Scottish societies, with several military companies, will form a pro- Coneiony eg will be reviewed by the Mayor at the City Hall. Arrival of the German Band. ‘The Bertin Garde Grenadier Band, about forty in number, arrived by the steamer Rhein at Hoboken yesterday morning. The streets leading to Busch’s Hotel were hung with flags and emblems of wel- come. The band halted outside the hotel and played several airs, amid the cheers of an immense number of citizens. Speeches were made by Strauss and several other gentlemen. Captain Busch, on coming forth to welcome the champion musi- cians, was enthusiastically cheere by the band, whose members were struck with his giant proportions, After playing several tunes which the spectators called for, and which were acknowledged to bé the best ever heard from a brass band, the musicians retired to the dining halls arid were treated to a sumptuous repast. Several Hoboken politicians assisted in ing away with the viands. In the afternoon they went on board a revenue cutter, furnished by Collector Arthur, and proceeded to’ the Boston boat, on Which they departed for the “Hub.” It will be re- membered that this band was awarded the first prize at the Paris Exhibition of 1867, and is con- sidered the first of all German banda, There are thirty-five more members belonging to the com- pany, who remained at home for vations reasons. THE SAENGERFEST IN ST, LOUIS, Sr. Louis, June 15, 1872, Alarge number of delegates from the different societies in attendance at the Saengerfest assem- bled at the hall this morning. Forty-three socie- ties were represented. A motion to hold anational Saengerfest every fifth year instead of every second ¥Fearwas tabled. A motion to allow each society one delegate for every twelve members instead of two delegates for each society was adopted. Cleveland was selected as the place of holding the next Saen- gerfest Another great audience greeted the singers at Saengerfest Hall to-night, although not as large as last night. The programme was pleasantly varied y the substitution of separate hoes singing for the full chorus. The pieces sung by the separate societies were ‘The Call,” by the Haeliner Cleve- land Maennerchor; “Awake,”’ by the Koec! “i Cestia Union of Cincinnati; “Lovely is b ring,’ the Abt Belleville Saengerbund; “Song Spring. by the Abt Columbus Maenmerchor; “Adleu,? by the Schubert Louisville Lelderkranz, Mra, Dexter | gave an arivtta and valse, by Venzano, and “Let the bright seraphim,” from the oratorio of “Samson,"? by Haydn. After the concert a torchlight festival was given in Scheider's garden, at which there was @ great crowd and festivities were kept up until a very late hour, To-morrow there will be a grand piente on the fair grounds, which will end the ‘Week’s entertainment, OBITUARY, Thedeath of Mr. A. F. Shepherd, who published an excellent acceunt of the Abyssinian Expedition, is announced at Bombay, India. ‘ Ex-Judge A. A. Phillips. Judge Alfred A. Phillips is dead, The Bench has lost an ornament. During his manifold diseases he evinced a most formidable power of endurance, and his last hours were consecrated to religious venera- tion. Conscious of early demise, his thoughts were concentrated upon subjects beyond this mundane sphere, and, although surrounded by his family, he seemed to hold a communion with those whose ex- emplary life has entitled them to reward. Ever foremost as a lawyer, he was called upon by a majority of the people to sit as judge upon the Marine Court Bench. For a quarter of a century he occupied that unenviable position, and his brethren of bench and bar (most competent to judge) have endorsed him incorruptible. His oy and friends have iost a husband, a father anda Iriend. The inperal takes place to-day from his residence, Ni 146 East Twenty-seventh street. EUROPEAN MARKETS.
