~ HORRIBLE OHILD MURDER. \A Woman Beate Her Little stepdaughter to Death. [From the St. Joseph (Mo.) Herald, June 4.) | Last Friday the people of Villisca, lowa, were shocked by the report that achild had been murdered ‘gbout six miles north of the town by its infuriated ‘and jealous stepmother. Subsequent investigation proved the correctness of the report, and shows that @ most infamous crime has been committed ‘the details of which are most sickening and horrify- ing. An eye witness to some of tho tragic clrcum- ‘Btances says:—A man named Bilis Grimth, who lives upon rented farm some five or #ix miles north of Villisca, has had @ little girl, some five Years old—a daughter bya first wife—living with , bim, he having been divorced and remarried some 'thme ago. This child has been for some time the innocent object of the wrath and vengeance of Its parents, and on Wednesday last the wife of Grimth ‘and stepmother to the Lttle girl, upon some pre- (tended cause, set upon the child with a switch, and having beaten her for some time seemed not to be watisfied with that mode of unishment, Produced a blacksnake whip with a heav: stock and beat the object of her wratl moss unmercifully until tired out, and ry seemingly hed gyn with rage, with the endishness of a wild beast she struck her now roeraee victim several severe and what proved be fatal blows upon the back of the head, crush- Ang the skull at each blow. Not satisfled with her rork she then sprang upon the child with her feet it lay yeaa. upon the ground before her and jtamped it with the heels of her shoes, breaking he bones of the shoulders and making uel looking ‘contusions on its breast. A young gi if Nancy rs by namo, was living in the family at that ‘Mme, and when the infuriated woman was beating el child with the whip she attempted to interpose its behalf, but the wife quickly silenced her by 4 pistol from her pocket and threatening tn ‘the wickedest manner possible that if she raised a hand to interfere or attempted to leave the prem- dues she would shoot her. Being a timid girl she subsided. When the woman had completed her work of ‘Meath she coolly threw its senseless form to the ‘door, Its head striking the jam, and told the girl to ‘Wash the blood from its body and redress it, and then she could call one of the neighbors. Mrs. Wil- liam Stewart, who lives not far distant, was ac- foordinaty, called, The child lived about an hour, remaining insensible all the time. The girl, Miss Sagers, was in the meantime threatened with death at the hands of this most inhuman savage, in case Bhe divulged the cause of the child’s death, and put ito her mouth another story as to the origin of the child’s injuries. S | The woman seems to have exhibited the same ‘Spirit of relentless flendishness until the child was actu dead, for while it was dying she gave vent to her feelings by kicking it as it lay upon a pallet ‘on the floor of the house. +, 48 s00n as the neighbors came in they suspected the cause of the condition of the child, A physician was sent for, and after the child’s death a coroner's inquest was held, which developed the facts that have been related above, and the woman was ar- ‘ated for murder, \, From the actions of the busband and father when ‘he returned Lome from tne field where he had been at work it is inferred that he was in sympathy with his wife in patting to death the child, and he has been arrested for complicity in the murder. The woman is rough and coarse in her conversa- tlon, swears like a trooper and seems incapable of human sympathy. The former wife of Griffith is said to have pro- cured @ divorce from him for adultery, and was Awarded the ht to the possession of the child nd compelled him to support it. Still he retained it and since married this woman. Lately the former wife gave them notice that she wanted the little girl, but would expect him to furnish means for its sapport, as she herself was poor and unable to care for it, This seemed to fill the mind of the ew wife with a determination to prevent, and she ias succeeded, in the manner we have indicated, The family not long since removed to that vicinity from Colorado. The woman has been in the habit of carrying a loaded revolver about her | person and is a practised hand in usingit.
