8 FINANCHML AND COMMERCIAL. Sharp Rise in United States Bonds in London and New York. The First Fruits of the Amended, Treaty. The Domestic Results Impeded by Clique Interference. “GOLD MAINTAINED UNCHANGED. Mocks Assdiled and Weakened---Pacifie Mail Lowered to 72 1-9. A Combined “‘Bear’’ Movement on the Stock Exchange. WALL STREET, } Monpay, May 27—6 B M. On ‘Change to-day the principal feature was the 4 firmness im cotton, which advanced to the even ‘S50. for low middlings. Flour was heavy and lower, nd wheat was inclined to sympathize with it, but -Femained moderately steady. ‘The cotton failures rumored last week were an ex- @ggeration, the trouble being confined to one drm, ‘who expoct to be afloat in a few days, In Wall etreet and vicinity an active weakness in the stock market was attended by A BETTER DEMAND FOR MONEY, ‘with, in the interval between twoand three o'clock, @ little running to make up balances. The activity ‘was far from being anticipated early in the day, ‘when the renewals were generally on the former ecale of 6 per cent for loans on stocks, and 5a 6 per cent on governments, with an occasional stock loan @tSpercent. After two o'clock there wasa sharp demand at 6 per cent, and a fatr amount of money Was loaned at 7 per cent. Tho activity had this Mmit, however. Borrowers wanted the money at Bpercent, and were quite unwilling to pay more after the steady facilities which they enjoyed pre- viously, The supply at 7 per cent betrayed the abundance of funds still accessible by the brokers hhad they been unable to adjust their bank accounts at a lower rate, Discounts were steady and quoted 7a 8 per cent for prime double names of short dates, _ Foreign exchange was firmer, without much doing, and toward the close oue leading firm advanced the Fate for sixty day sterling to 1093{. The market is quotable at 109% a 109%¢ for prime sixty day, and 11036 for sight bills. THE TRRATY RATIFIOATION IN ENGLAND. The adoption of the resolution ratifying the Sup- plementary Treaty has produced a marked eiiect upon the London market so far as American secu:1- ties are concerned. The advance in our bonds to- ay has been 4 a % per cent—the '67’s rising from 9354 to 94 and closing buoyant at the latter price, Which, if our memory serves us aright, is the high- @st point ever attained in the foreign market by ‘our five-twenties. Eries wavered at first, from Jocal and inside reasons doubtless, but rallied with She general market for American investments, GOLD FIRM—1183¢ a 113%. As the impatient crowd burst into the Gold Room at the prescribed opening hour an early pressure to Bell was perceptible as a consequence of Saturday night's doings in the Senate, and the dealings up to moon were alternately at the two prices—113% und 413%. The foreign bankers were the principal sellers, but disposed of only small amounts, com- paratively speaking, and found ready takers. The gold they offered was legitimately theirs to the ex- tent that it represented the proceeds of bond sules ®n the other side to catch the difference be- tween the New York and London markets, and was limited im amount for the reason that they soon found it impossible to get any round amount of bonus on this side at prof- {table Ogares. In other words, the gold market re- fased to become the vehicle of expressing the effect a@broad upon our national credit of the adoption of the Supplemental Treaty, ‘and remained firm, ad- vancing eventually to 113%, when later in the day the domestic quotations of five-twenties moved up to the parallel of the foreign market. The parties controlling the gold premium seem satisfied to let circumstances, like the treaty ratification, increase the short interest, which, if calculations are cor- Fect, is by no means inconsiderable. The course of the market during the day is shown in the tabie:— In the gold loan market the rates ranged from 8 to 5 per cent for carrying. The operations of the id Exchange Bank were as follows:— (Gold cleared... ‘Gold balance: ,Ourrency balance: 1,705,605 _ Tomorrow's sigamer Will take ino specis. The government list wag buoyant and strong thronghoat, each session of the board evoking a farther advance in quotations, the 67's touching ‘117%. STOOKS WEAK AND LOWER. The very earliest impressions in the Stock Ex- change were ofa favorable character as regards the ‘expected influence of the restoration of good feel- ‘ing between England and America by the ratifica- tion of the Supplemental Treaty, and the first half ihour witnessed a nervous covering of short sales by those who believed they had placed themselves in @ wrong attitude with reference te the market, The firmness thus imparted was prief-lived and did not outlast the morning board, the first call revealing @ weakness and inaugurating a general decline, which brought to many os mind the oftremembered experience that in Wall street good news is a signal to sell, Btock speculation on @ nominal theory being apt, dike the best laid plans of mice and men, to “gang @giey.” The depression seemed, however, more the result of the direct application of bearish effort than a natural mevement. In fact, the “bears” did \assail it with all their might just at the point when At stood hesitating after the first impulse given it ‘by those who had been 60 eager to cover short sales ‘fn the early forenoon. An erst “boar,” of consider- sable fame, led the assault with @ raid upon Pacific | Mail, which he sold to the extent of ten or fifteen ‘thousand shares, breaking the price from ‘91% to 72%, to the general consternation of the ‘crowd of amall “baits,” whom he further terrified ‘Dy serving on the Pacifio Mall Company notice of ‘(fais Intention to move for an injunction restraining * the officers from lending the money in the treasury \apon other than United States stocks, &¢., all of ‘which farce was enacted last winter in the earlier {bistory of the Paoiflo Mail speculation, The pro- fessional operators and elique dealers are very Confased as to each other's position with ref- nee to this stock ever since the main pool out lest week, and, in the anxiety oome fo eet in Sonaaen atnaee © bots ho “oa” be begun over goed mead ta ‘dugecs bare been sertousty bad burned. Hence the persistent retention of the books In a closed condition kept out the Boston certificates from this market, The heaviest dealings ‘e distributed between Pacific Mail ana Erie, which litter went off to 6734. A sus- picion of the real extent of the speculative sales indulged in by the “bears” and the exceedingly buoyant temper of the London market, which had gone just as was anticipated it would after the ratification of the treaty, started a smart reaction after three o'clock, Pactic Mail recovering about two per ceut and others pretty nearly all they lost in the interval since morning; but the effort at im- provement was followed by dulness, although a fair degree of steadiness was to be remarked in the eventual closing of the market, The Southern State bonds were quict and steady, with the dealings rather more widely distributed, HIGHEST AND LOWEST PRICES.
