8 THE MUTUALS _ “Reas” feated Wine Game Between the Bostoi and the Mutuals—The Latter by a Score of 9 to 2 The Boston Red Stockings and the Mutuals played the first of their championship games yes- terday afternoon on the Union Grounds, Witliams- burg, and the result was a signal defeat of the New Yerk club, by a score of 9 to 2. There were present on the grounds about six thousand persons, while mearly a8 many more occupied every available posi- ‘tion from which a sight of the grounds could be had grom withont the fence, ‘The playing of both nines was really brilhant in the field, the Mutuals having a little the best of it here; but at the bat they were nowhere beside their red-legged adversaries. By a reference to the score it will be scen that George Wright and Gould Jed at the ash, while Spaulding and McVey fol- Jowed close in their wake. As for the Mutuals’ score of base hits, the least said, perhaps, the bet- ter; but if they cannot do better next time they had better quit. In the field Hat- field, Start, Fggler, Fulmer and Hicks bore off the honors, the former playing second base ‘to perfection, while Hicks did not have a passed from Cummings. For the Bostons McVey and George Wright did the best execution, George makiug some really astonishing fine plays. THE GAME, The “Reds” won the toss and sent their greon- Jegged opponents to the ash, Hatfield led off with &@ hice grounder past first base, and as Kogers fumbled it Hatfield took two bags. Start bit to George Wright and retired at first. Pearce sent George a hot liner, which was muffed but picked up in time to beat Richard wo tirst. Eggier made a good foul-fair hit past third, which brought Hatfield home, and, owing to Leonard juggling the ball, Eggler got to second base, Cummings got first on a high ball to centre feld, Eggler scoring on the hit, Bechtel made the third hand out on a slow grounder to Barnes. Two runs, one earned, George Wright drove a liner to left, and gota base. Barnes hit a hot bounder to Peavee at short, and the result was a fine double play by Pearce, Hatfled and Start. This sharp and effective p! was enthusiastically applauded by the assemblage, Leonard earned a base, as did alsoM , the lacter sending a beautiful liner to right centre, bringing Leonard home and himself going to third on Eg- ters bad throw in, Spauldi earned ab but joVey was caught at the home plate by Fulmer and Hicks. One earned run, THE SECOND INNING Tesulted in the Mutuals being whitewashed, while their opponents, through an error by Fulmer, gotin another run. By an over pitch by Cummings tho “Reds” recorded another ran in the th inning, but the “Mutes” took their second “goose egg.” La the fourth inning the Kostons, through tine batting by Barnes and George Wright, scored another earned run. The Mutuals, however, took another paws at Chicago, Again, in the ifth inning, the ew Yorkers failed to score, while the red-legged chaps got in three more ‘eained runs—Gould making a magnificent three-base drive to right feld, Spaulding hitting a calker to Kggler, (who, how- ever, allowed it to fem Sees his legs, and the batter got to third hase instead of being held on first), and MeVey sending aliner to centre field. Durfng this inuing the assemblage was treated to another fine double play, Schatler was on first base when Rogeis sent up a high ball, which Hatileld captured and fielded to first bef t back. ‘The point of excellence in the play was he manner in which Start took the ball at first when Hatfield threw it. It came very warm and away to one side; but Joe put down his left hand and capturea it, amid the cheers of the immense crowd. TNE SIXTH INNING was marked by close and sharp playing on both sides, not a run being scored, ‘The ‘seventh and eighth innings Were counterparts of the sixth, Pul- mer and Eggler each making remarkably’ fine catches for the Mutuals, while George Wright bore off the palm for fielding on behalf of his club. When the ninth inning opened it was with the expecta- tion on the part of the many friends of the Mutual Club present, that their boys would make a raliy and bring their score up a little, to say | ‘the least, but they were disappointed. The Mutuals | seemed and were utterly unable to bat Spaulding, who, it must be said, pitched with more than usual brilliancy and effect. In one, two, three order the | “Mutes” we lisposed of, aud then their lively | opponents went in and put on two more runs, earn- one of them. he following is the score, the column marked 6” judicating errors made :— x AL BOSTON. To-mor- row Mr. Jere Johnson sells under the hammer 200 lots at Inglewood, Quecns county, L. I The ®@usiness at the desk has been unusually good, especially in Madison and Fifth avenue lots, and a very large amount of property has ‘been @isposed of in the past six Weeks. Among the re- cent purchases is that of Messrs. Kall & Black, who have bought a full lot on the northwest corner of Fifth avenue and Twenty-eighth street and the lot adjoining it and fronting on Twenty-ciguth street, ‘with the brown stone building thereon, for $180,600, Mr. John Andersen, who las been for some time the owner of the two valuable lots facing the Fifth ave- ue plaza, and Lomein from Fifty-eighth to Pitty- ninth street, between Fifth and Sixth avenues, hag urchased the two adjoining through lots for 140,000, cash. This purchase gives Mr. Anderson a plot of seventy-five feet on Filty-eighth and Fifty- Rinth streets and 200,10 feet on the plaza. Mr. A, paid $90,000 for the two lots east of and adjoining the last mentioned lots about three years ago. V. K. Stevenson & Son have sold two lots, north wide of Sixty-second street, 100 feet west of Fourth avenue, for Mr, Michael Murray, for $27,500; also three lots, west side of Ninth avenue, 25.5 feet south of Fifty-cighth strect, for Gerson Frei heidt, for 000, ‘One of the most important sales of the season in suburban real estate wili be that of the Messrs, A. D. Mellick & Co, at Elizabeth, when 600 lots and several houses will be sold next Monday. The property is situated in the Fifth ward, in the im- mediate vicinity of the North Elizabeth station, ad- joining North Park. The terms are very liberal and ‘the jots are in the midst of improvements, Several pieces of property were offered at the Exchange to-day, but the bids proving unsatisfac- tory they were withdrawn, and the business of the day was exclusively transacted by Jeremiah John- son, Jr., Who disposed of the following property :— 2 lots x99 on Atlantic ay., between Brooklyn and Albany avs. &.
