THE NISSOURL TRAGEDY. | —_+—_—_. FANOTHER STGAY ADQUT THOSE BONDS, ¥ ] Who Were the Aggressive Party ? - HEAR BOTH SIDES. {From the St. Louis Republican, Apri! $0.) Mr. A. A. Zick, of the firm of Zick & Gosch, Pleas- ant Hill, with several other citizens of Casa county, called on Governor Brown yesterday in reference to the recent troubles fn that county. Mr. Zick was the bearer of @ letter to the Governor signed by A. 0. Bryant, Sheriffof Cass county Captain George Marper, of the First National Bauk, Pleasant Hill; David Humphries, Robert Adaws and George Gosch, all prominent citizens of Pleasant Hill, ‘These gen- tlemen ask the Governor to send some persons ou whom he can rely to Investigate the condition of matters fa Cass county, and request that (roups be sent up to restore order ani law, if found necessary. They represent everything as quiet, and that th Sheriff was able to cnfoice the execution of the law _ Without assistance, The statement of Mr. Zick puts a different color- ing on the recent tragedy at Gun City than ts repre- sented by the. reports already published. He says that the reports copied from the Kansas City and Holden papers have been so and sensational that, even to those unacqnaiuted with the connec. tion which the editors of those papers had with the bond swindle, they would seem to be extravagant and published for the purpose of exciting another riot among the people. Mr. Zick says the evidence taken at the inquest shows thal as the train stopped Cline drew his pistol and tired out of the window into the crowd standing by, wounding two men. He then rushed ont upon the platform, and when charged with the shooting denied it, aud in the melée which ensued he was shot twice and KkINét. Stephenson and Dutro also fired and ran into the baggage car, where the fizht was resumed, and thus bot Were Killed. Buch hud the marks of two wounds. General Joe Shelby was not molested, as he offered no attack upon the people and was in no wise connected with the bond swindle, He was not a contractor upon the road nor was he in close connection with the tssuing of the bonds, He was contractor upon the Kansas City and Memphis road, to which bonds had been issued by the Court, contrary to the remonstrance of almost the entire eople of the county and in violation of a writ of Injunction which had been issued restraining them from doing 80. { It was then—some time last fall—that the secret society, which still exists, was formed. Its object ‘was to protect the people from bankruptcy from the action of the County Court; the legal protection of the county by raising money to pay the necessary expenses in testing the mochien, of the legality of that iasue of bonds by the Court. Any Naaig by paying one dollar could become amember, The constitution and bylaws of the society, which was called “The Protective Union Association of Cass County,” were published in the papers. The meet- ings and proceedings were ail public, and by its feney attorneys were employed, and a writ of injunction was granted, and which has been sus- tained, But the bonds were issued notwithstand- ing, and the amount, with Interest, over $330,000,i8 a debt upon the county. The community, says Mr. Zick, Were patient under this wrong, and disposed to endure the injury, and made no demonstra- tion until the court issued $229,000 bonds toa railroad which had been built without any vote of the people, The court andits confederates left the county and became fugitives from justice, By the exertions of the Sherif, the President of the associ- ation and other citizens the parties implicated were brought back to Cass county and bound over to await the action of the Grand Jury, No violence was Olfered to any of them, and they were as safe as at any place in the State. But not content with the people’s moderation, and presuming upon their long suffering, they gathered around them men by the influence of thelr money which they had stolen from the people—men of des- Jaden character, who openly boasted of their ‘auus, taunted the people that they were pow- erless to resist the payment of the bonds, and threat- encd to kill all of those who Lad been prominent in the detection of the swindle and the arrest of the perpetraiors, It was then that the indignation of some hot-headed men, according to Mr. Zick, got the better of thelr judgment. and they gathered to- gether for some purpose, which has resuited in the eplorabis tragedy at Gua City. ue People of Cass county, says Mr. Zick, are 1 We and good citizens, and deprecate all riot- Tle says the persistent erforts on the part of the press to have it believed by the conntry at large that a reign of terror exists there, that no one dares speak of the transaction for fear of the mob, can only be explained from the fact that the report of the transaction is taken from a blassed sourc: The people are generally about their usual avoc: tions, ‘There is no jear of the mob, and the action of aay Wednesday was unexpected and surprising to them, The above statement from a respected citizen of Cass county presents another phase of the subject about which those nearest the scene of the recent tragedy scem to be divided. A thorough investiga- tion of the facts in the case is invited, and, of course, it will require time to ferret out and estab- Le the truth of the representations made by either side. Mr. La Due, who came down from Henry county night before’ last, gives another version. He 1s under $25,000 bonds to appear at Harrisonville Cir- cult Court next Monday, but says he will not ap- pear, as his life has been threatened, and it would not be prudent for him to go. He declares there isa reign of terror in the county. Matters appear quict and peaceable, but it is only an appearance. The lives: of certain persons have been threatened, and if they should be found would be Kilied. | Mr. La Due says the Protective Union Association (P. U. A.) in the county is sald to embrace 1,000 persons, and that two-thirds of the population sympathize with the mob, and nothing can be done, except by an over- whelming force of troops. Ail oMciuls ave_over- awed, Whether Mr. La Due or Mr. Zick ts right concerning the present state of affairs in Cass county subsequent events must determine, Since the above information was obtained our re- porter had an interview with Governor Brown, who ‘was in receipt of fresh despatehes last night from Fest a Geveral Sigel and the Commissioners sent by him to Holden to examine iuto matters, General Cockrell and Colonel Phillips. Tho purport of the despatches received is that qniet prevails in Cass county. There is no further excitement at Holden, and the Mayor docs not anticipate any more trouble, Captain Phelan’s company was stationed at Holden and will reimain there as long as their presence is needed. The citizeus of Pleasant Hill esterday sent down a deputation to Holden, assur- ing the authorities of the latter place of their read- iness to co-operate in restoring the reign of law and order, and procuring the arrest of tle perpe- trators of the recent outrages. Adjutant General Sigel and the commissioners 0 to-day to Harrisonville, and will visit such other Res as may be necessary to obtain the fullest in- jormation in relation to the recent tragedy. ‘fhe Governor expresses as his opinion that no more troops will be needed in that quarter, and he believes that the measures already taken will re- store order, and that while it may take some little time to bring the perpetrators of the late outrage to justice, yet that it will be done, and done thor- oughly and quietly, The best information that can be obtained abont the men who itis reported were ordered to leave is that thoy were a good deal excited and were not ordered away at all, but that one of their friends told them they had better leave for safety. d Dis acts, FIRES IN BROOKLYN. The month of April was particularly prolific in the Qumber of fires occurring there, as will be seen from the subjoined report, which was submitted to the Police Commissioners by the Fire Marshal of Brooklyn yesterday : GENTLEMEN—There were thirty-six fires in this city during the month of April, 1872. This is agreat Sncrease over the number for the previous month, and, strange to gay, few of tuem have boon cause by kerosene. As I’ have often stated before, care lessnees ts the great cause of fires, A glance at the statistical table herowith submitted, showing the cause of cach fire, will prove this fact. The number of ak eta here within the past few daya 1 becoming alarming. The firemen have been at work constantly for hours, only to be calied away ~to another fire before they could entirely extin- guish the first; and I feel satisiled that novhing but their Ree discipline and eMeiency have saved the city from very large conflagrations. Orrawa, May 2, 1872, In the House last night Mr. Oliver moved an ad- dress for copies of all the correspondence respect- ing the fees charged by officials of the American government on goods passing through the United States in bond. He said the fees charged by the consular agents and others were very high, while American goods were allowed to pass through Canada free of charge. Mr. DgcosMs said the people of British Columbia were deeply interested in this matter, aa they were compelled oer excessive charges on goods car- ried in bond throngh the United States, Mr. Ginas was glud the motion had been brought up. There was no doubt that the Canadinns suf. fered heavily in this respect, On each carload of Mews grain the charges amounted to from $10 to 20, Mr. Warrr said that the Inmbering Interests of Ceorgiau Bay were scriously affected by these high charges. WORKMAN stated that the Montreal mer- 3, Who were already doing considerable busl- | ness with British Columbia, were continually com- platuing of the trouble and annoyance they were put tom sending goods through the United States. Mr. Murniry referred to the delays that Canadian vessels trading on Lake Michigan were subjected to, and hoped something Would be done to remove the annoyance. Mr. HARRISON, spenking on behalf of the mer- chauts of Toronto, said that a change in the system ‘Was necessary. Mr. 'TiLLEY Was notover sanguine of a pennies being effected; stili the government would do everything in their power, Mr, CARTWRIGHY moved @ series of reso!ntions ex- presslug regret that the imperial government had assumed the responsibility of withdrawing Canada’s claims against the United States arising out of the Fenian raids, On motion of Sir JouN MACDONALD the motion was not proceeded with, that rentieman ek to bring ina bill respecting the Treaty of Washington on Friday, when the whole question could be dis- cussed.
