FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. “THINGS ARE QUIET.” Gold 111---Governments Firm--- Southern Securities Steady. sUBSIDY AGAIN. Pacifie Mail Excited, Western Union Stimu- lated, and an Electric Impulse All Round. MONEY QUIET---FOREIGN EXCHANGE DULL, WALL STREET, } Tuvnrspay, April 18—6 P. M. GOLD 111, ‘The gold market has shown a reticent feeling to- @ay, notwithstanding the increased disposition, per telegram, to block the ‘American case,” so called, at Geneva. Asa matter of fact it may be stated that @be American case does not receive the endorse- ment of all Americans. What policy the adminis- tration may be compelled to act upon in this matter 4s of course problematical, but the local feeling is aswe have pointed out. Gold ranged as low as 110%, but hardened later in the day, with a firmer tone to the London market. The carrying rate was Bto3 percent, At ( TUE GOVERNMENT SALB the aggregate bids were for $4,175,600, of which $1,000,000 was sold below the market. STOCKS UNSETTLED AND EXCITED, The stock market was excited and Irregular during the day, Pacific Mail becoming active in the afternoon upon the revival of the subsidy promise, nd Western Union on the assumption that the Atlantic and Pacific was willing to sell out. GOVERNMENTS WERE STEADY, ‘with a moderate business, most of which was do- mestic. The market closed strong, as follows:— Wnited States currency sixes, 115% a 116; do, sixes, 1881, registered, 115 a 11534; do. do, do., coupon, 116 31634; do, five-twentles, pepe erod) May and No- vember, 110% a 114%; do. do., 1862, coupon, d 118% a 114%; do. do., 1864, do. do., 113% a 114: Go. do., 1865, do. do., 11434 a 115; do. do., 1867, reg- istered, January and July, 11342 a 113%; do. do., 1865, coupon, do, 11276 @ 113; do, do., 1867, do. do., 23K a 118%; do. do., 1868, do, do., 1143 a 11434 ‘do. fives of 1881, funded, ‘registered, 10934 a 110; ft M3 ia do, ten-forties, do. di ey ‘coupon, 40944 jo i 100123 a 209345 Central Pacific gold bonds, 101% a 10234. THE MONEY MARKET shows a disposition to the return of nominal sales, Early in the day seven per cent was paid, and close ‘on banking hours money was offered at two per cent. The legitimate rates may be quoted at six to feven per cent. Discounts are unchanged, The wonservative action of the Bank of England direc- tore to-day has undoubtedly influenced the quicter feelIng in the money market here, while at the game time it rebukes the latest telegraphic de- spatches of a belligerent purpose on the part of France. FOREIGN EXCHANGE is quict and steady at the rates previously quoted. RAILWAY MORTGAGES, ‘Tho following were the bids to-day lew York Cen Tol & W Ast m.
