10 "WAR AT PERTH AMBOY. ea i Re ‘TO BRIDGE OR NOT TO BRIDGE, Sipe al) We Have a Railroad to Long Branch }— Two Giant Corporations Struggling for Supremacy—Five Hundred Men Ready for Battle. | | ‘Those who frequent Long Brauch In the summer beason would derive some consolation from the knowledge that a railroad is being constructed but for the fact that the work has been retarded and anay be delayed for mouths owing to the bickerings ef rival railroad corporations, ‘The leading spirit 48 the enterprise is John Taylor Johuston, President of the New Jersey Central, and this in itself arouses the jealousy of the Penusylvania Centra, monopoly which managed to gobble up the Camden and Amboy during the past year. The Lehigh Val- Jey Railroad was leased some months ago to the New Jersey Central, and the united railroads térm a powerml rival to the new monopoly. The con- #truction of the road to Long Branch, under the direct superintendence of Mr, Johnston, would give an additional ally to the Central-Lehigh combina- ‘on, and to frustrate this, therefore, is the policy and aim of the Pennsylvania Central. In constructing the new road it is necessary to have a bridge erected across the Raritan at Perth Amboy, and just here the Pennsylvania Company Anagined it found the heel of Achilles, It was al- leged that the proposed bridge would seriously interfere with the naviation interest, and threats were made that the United States District Court would be called upon to prevent the prog- yess of the work. It is now some five months since a HERALD reporter called upon Mr. Johnston in reference to these threats but that gentleman stated that he had no appre- hesions of any tuterference, as no motion for an Injunction could be successfully maintained in the Courts. Five days afterwards the injunction was applied for by the Pennsylvania Central, and was ranted by Judge Nixon, of the United States Dis- rict Court at Trenton, Arguments were heard on the motion to dissolve the mjunction, but the Court has not yet given a decision, ‘This is the case in brief. Itmay be added that at several mass meet- Ings held at Perth Amboy the people were unanl- mously in favor of the proposed bridge, THE ROW AT PERTH AMBOY, The unusually quiet neighborhood of Perth Am- doy was made the theatre for the stirring scenes of conflicts between the rival railway interests. Two contending parties are on the line of the Blizabeth- ort and Perth Amboy Railroad ata point where the ‘oodbridge and Perth Amboy Railroad crosses the Une of the Elizabethport ana Perth Amboy Rail- road, about # mile distant from the ancient city of Perth Amboy. THE CAUS The Pennsylvania Central Railre since proposed to the Elizabethpor boy Railroad that in conside! of using a portion of their r they (the Pennsylvania Ceutr build a bridge across the between Perth and South Amboy, and also construct that portion of the’ they (the Pennsylvania Central) desired to use order to form an all tion to New York, and = thus = avoid of reshipment | of freight and Perth | Amboy ou & steame sident of the | Pennsylvania Central Railroad, Mr, Thomas Scott, eaw that the wbethport and Pe Am boy Riilroad gave this all vail connecting link that he | desired for the Camden and Amboy Railroad, wud | he made the offer as stated abo The citizens of Perth Amboy were very desirous to have the bridge | built, and the oer wis at once accepted by the Flizabethport and Perth Amboy Railroad rey, «some time nd Perth Am- ion of the privilege ad ax a connection Railroad) would Raritan River, pussenge ‘The shrewd Pr th yuiliding of the road to Messrs, P. The National Amatcur Regatta of the Schuylkill Navy—The Special Rules of Organization and the Established Rac- ing Regulations. ‘The National Amateur Regatta organized by the Sehuyikill Navy bids fair to become one of the most prominent and interesting series of bout races that | will oceur in the United States during the coming active aquatic season. The several clubs constitat- ing the association are recognized as being very ambitions in their efforts to encourage the sport of rowing, as they are striving at all times with the one object in view—its advancement to the frout rank of athletic amusements. The contests hitherto arranged by the Schuylkill Navy were attended with much snecess, but that now on foot outstrips those of past years both in the number of liberal prizes to he offered for competition and in the character of the proposed races, The special rules regulating the preliminaries and conditions of the regatta have been issued and transmitted to all the more prominent alubs in the country, and from indications it is safe to predict that the number of favorable respdnses received by the committee will be very large. Letters of invita- tion which accompanied the circular of special rules advise that the races will be rowed on the Schuyl- Kill, within the limits of Fairmount Park, where the river can be entirely under the control of the Ke- gatta committee, THE SPECIAL RULES. 1, ‘The regatta will take place between the 8th and 15th , 1872.
