Steinkamp, Twentieth p went in searc ner of nuh avenue, Yesterday afternoon Coroner Keenan Investigated the case of Mr. John G. Whittaker, the gentleman who was run over on the night’ of the 24 Inst., eorner of Grand street and Sonth Fifth ave- pue, by car 109 of the Grand street line. Death resulted from the injuries received, nis left thigh being terribly fractured. Deceased attempted to cross the track ahead of the horses, and was warned of his danger by @ colored man mamed Johnson; but, not heeding it, Kept on and ‘Was ron over. At thestation house deceased stated to Captain McDermott, of the Eighth precinet, that Ro One but himself was to blame lor the accident, and exonerated the car driver from blame. Assistant District Attorney Stewart was present at the investigation, but not by request of the Coro- ner, and he was about to cross-examine one of the Wituesses. Mr. Francis, Superintendent of we Toad, protested against the interterence of counsel, to which Mr. Stewart — replied that he was assistant District Attorney and represented the people. Tnis did not satisfy Superintendent Francis, when Coroner Keenan expressed his ability, with the ald of we vary, to conduct the case without the assistance of counsel, Mr. Stewart, evidently displeased with the turn the case had taken, said that as his services ‘were not required he would leave the court, which he did at once. There was nothing whatever in- tricate or complicated about the case. rn a SET es RELIGLOUS NOTLEGs.
