FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, ADULL DAY IN WALL STREET ’ Progress of the Speculation in Northwestern, Pacific Mail and Union Pacifie, A Rise in Erie on the Hope of Leg- islative Redress. Money Tight—Gold Steady—Gov- ernments Quiet. DECLINE IN SOUTH CARGLINA BONDS. WALL STRzET, } Tuespay, Feb, 27—6 P. M. On "Change to-day wheat was heavy and lower. The cotton market was firm and a trifie higher. MONEY ACTIVE. ‘ The money market was active throughout the day, with, at the close, a suggestion of stringency. ‘The increased demand was due chiefly to the neces- | Bitie3 of the pool in Northwestern, who had some | ‘fifty thousand shares of stock to take care of, and found great dificulty in getting the money imme- lately. The rate from the beginning of business \¥as sharp seven per cent, the only exceptions below Phat figure being among the government dealers, ‘who had, as usual, anumber of balances placed to eit credit at six per cent. As the afternoon wore ‘on the demand became urgent, and borrowers who had awaitea the expected relaxation betore three w'clock not only were alsappointed in this caicula- ion, but nad to pay 1-32 a 1-16 per cent in addition Ao legal interest in orier to get the requisite bal- ‘ances to close their bank accounts. Commercial paper was quoted 7 a 83g per cent Miscount for prime double names, | Foreign exchange was nominaily steaay, but very ‘ul Bills in second hands were freely sold at a discount of 4¢ per cent from the asking rates, in ‘order to get the money. The following were the | Tates at the close of business:—Sterling, sixty days, mmercial, 10834 & 1094; do., good to prime bank. ‘3°, 10994 410934; do. short sight, 11034 a 110%; [Paris, sixty days, 5,25 a 5.20; do., short sight, 5.135¢ ‘@ 5.15; Prussian thalers, 7174 a 7214; Antwerp, 5.25 a 5.20; Switzerland, 5.23% a 5.20; Hamburg, 357% a 36+,; Amsterdam, 40: 407; Frankfort, 40% a 4134; Bremen, 7334 a 79. GOLD STEADY—110%¢ a 11034. _ The gold market was in the main steady, the | fi Dulk of the day’s business having been at 11034. (The pressure in the morning to sell the coin dis- ‘pursed by tie Treasury in payment of the Maren in- terest induced decline to 11034, from which there ‘Was a temporary reaction to 1105 on @ Washington telegram asserting not only that there is no founda- tion for the report that the United States will accept £10,000,000 in settlement of the Alabama claims, but | that the award of the Genevd Commission will be | insisted upon. This influence was short-lived, hows | ever, for gold settled back to 1103¢ on a convicuon ‘With most people in the market that the payment of B fixed sum will be the result of the present inter- change of communications between London and ‘Washington. In the absence of prices from London, ‘Where the day was a complete holiday, the market Was dull. GOVERNMENTS QUIET. the government list was qniet, and in the ab- Bence of the regular cals aud London quotations business was limited to light transactions over the pounter. By recent action of the Committee on Securities the currency sixes are now quoted In the same manner as other government Becurities—that 1s, the market price in- wludes accrued interest. A HOLIDAY ON MARCH 17. \, Out of respect to the numerous citizens of Celtic irth or descent members of the Board or in- Pereenz in its dealings from aay today, and as a eatimontal of regard for the 1mmense Celtic contri- putions to the railway wealth of the country, pra beerf decided to close the Stock Exchange on trick’s Day, the 17th of March proximo. This tithe Was not arrived at by any special lutions or action of the Board, but was agreed Sasi soaees among the members, and will be ered to none the less strictly. It will be remem- ioe that last year the Legislature proposed mak- the 17th of March a holiday legally. This year Stock Exchange will render it one practically. is thought that the banks, the Custom House and buildings generally will unite with the Stock et SESE Exchange im this aecorous compliment to our Hi- bernian fellow citizens. STOCKS DULL AND STRONG. The stock market was dull, the absence of many leading members of the board at the funeral of the late Mr, Le Grand Lockwood and the omission of a formal session limiting business to the few more active specialties of the railway and miscellaneous hist. The earlier feature was a sudden rise in North- Western common to 775, on the disclosure by the HERALD of the organization of a new pool. The more conservative element of the street, thinking @ “bull” movement at hand, bougat heavily of Lake Shore, while the Pacific Mail party made their favorite active at 60}; a 505, In tue afternoon Erie was taken in hand and advanced to 82%, the speculation next running upon Union Pacific, which touched 35. The stringency in money and the re- ported refusal of the Washington Cabinet to accept a fixed Bash sertiement of the Alabama clatms ren- dered the market heavy in tae interval just before the closing of the banks, but the decline thus ensu- ing was triting outside of Northwestern and West- ern Union, which were affected to tne extent of about % per cent. New York, Feb. 20, 1872, To tas Eprvor OF THe HERALD:— In your sketch of George Wilcox, in this morn- ing’s- edition, you make the following statement He acquired some «distinction as a writer of fash- jonable gossip, and ultimately endeavored to turn =, Re utation to some pecuniary advantage by es- ug & fashionable weekly goamial in this city, our Soctety was the result of this id This assertion, taken in cone with the tenor of the rest of the article, 1s 30 manifesily cal- culated to injure me and my associates in our busi- ness that I am reluctantly compelled to request a correction. George Wilcox was not the originator of Our Society. 1 started it for Mr. Barks- daie, and managed tt during the first three months of tts existence, It is no boast to say that it was then a great success. The weekly returns showed a ciear profit of $400 above all expenses long before 1 severed my connection wita the paper. I resigned my position as managing editor because my notion of what a lashionable paper should be did not coincide with the peculiar plans Of the proprietor, 1t was not until after this time that [ firstmet Mr, Wiicox, who was introduced to me as the society editor of an evening newspaper. 1 pever had any business connection with him, nor did he ever do apy work for Our Society ‘until tt had pi through several hands and had become the property Of a worthy gentieman, who, knowing nothing of jourualism, was per- suaded to place Mr. Wilcox in charge of it. This was last summer. Mr. Wilcox’s management of the paper lasied only a month or two, je has not had anything to do with 1 since, Lately four gentiemen purchased a clear title to Our Society. [have now the sole management and am at periect liberty to make of it hencetorth & strictly first class newspaper, containing the fullest, Treshest and most select sociai news of the day— one, in short, which shall be unexceptionabdle in every respect. On no other condition would I have returned to it. I mention ts because vour asser- ion that “this Journal, however, has not had a very peaceful career” may be misconstrued to our disad- Vantage in the future by those who do not know the facts, Very respectiully, LAWRENCE S, KANE, Managing Kuitor Our soctety.
