STOCKS ACTIVE, WEAK AND LOWER. ‘The stock market opened firm, on the European despatches in the morning papers exhibiting a more conciliatory tone in the latest London comments on the Alabama question and the further prospect of a peaceful adjustment of all the matters in dispute through the friendly interposition of Chancelior Bismarck. But at the first cali a “break” in Union Pacific suddenly demoralized the market and started prices so rapidly on the aownward turn that the more timid class of operators saw @ panic impending and hastened to unburden themselves of such interest as they had in the market. Union Pacific fell to 3354, Ohio and Missis- sippi to 4354; Western Union to 69, Pacific Mail to 665;, Lake Shore to 89%, and Northwestern common to 73%. Hariem, which was so heavy Saturday, fell in this crisis to 10734, on the current impression of stockholders that the depression of the roadbed above the depot will be inevitably required of the company, to whom the alteration will be a cost of several millions of dollars, The only strength of the day was shown by Wabash, which was resoluiély supported by Mr. Daniel Drew against all oppo- sition and eventually advanced to 76%, The “break”? in Union Paciflc ts attributed to sales by the so- called Vanderbilt party, who, having perfected an agreement by which Mr. Horace F, Clark is to be the choice of the Board for next President of the road, were no longer interested in holding their stock, and parted with it accordingly. After the close of banking hours, and subsequent to the re- laxation 1y the money market, there was a recovery of irregular extent from the lowest points of the day, Hariem touching 109 and Pacific Mail 675, the latter on the adjournment and return of the investi- gating committee to Albany with what is regarded asa weak case against the “bull” clique.
