8 THE METHODIST BOOK CONCERN. ee Annual Conference Report ef the Commit. tee—Adjeurbment Till April. ‘The Methodist Book Committee sat yesterday watt! half-past three o’clock endeavoring to finish wp the business, Several of the members were ‘@uxions to go to their homes ana churches before ‘whe Sabbath, and hence the hurry. The sub-Com- mittee on Annual Report presented their report, which, with one or two slight verbal amendments, ‘was adopted, The report starts out with a aeclara- tion to the Annual Conferences that the committee are obliged to admit that the publisning inverests of ‘the denomination, so far as they relate to the Book Concern of New York, during the last quadrennium have been surrounded by UNPRECEDENTED DIFFICULTIES, and at times the best friends have somewhat anxiously inquired whether these clouds of obloquy and suspicion would ever be aispersed, The committee nave decided opinions as to where ‘the responsibilty for all this troubie rests, but are mot called upon to express any furtner judgment until their report to the General Conference. But ween ak all these grievous troubles, extend- yh nearly the whole quadrennium, some bo Soa as been made in the material success of the interest committed to their oversight, ‘The report then recites the condition and status @f the several publications, magazin pal ae, reviews, &c., all of whico are declared to have feund ina good and healthy condition and weil edited and managed, The Sabbath school litera- ture 1s also commended, and the German publica- tions have been increased in numbers and efficiency and are well received. ‘Tne periodicals in this de- partment have reached the first position among the German periodicals of the country, both in extent oo Shem and in the character of the literature ‘The loss to the church Li the ite fe fre, the committee says, will probably reach $100,000, but the recuperative power of Methodism in that region ‘Will doubtless attract the admiration of the church, nd at no distant day they hope to recover from the @ffects of that terrible disaster, The commitiee then gave their reason for not naving a more de- tallec report to present to the Annual Conferences, Because the accountant appointed last summer has a yet made his report, aren the adoption of this report some debate was in regard to the OPINIONS OF RESPONSIBILITY hinted at in the opening clauses, Some were in favor of striking out this part, but others favored making the language stronger. 1t was finally adopted as presented by the sub-committee. Asub-committee on the Quadrennial weary tre isting of Drs, Cyrus Brooks (Chairman), ° ham and F, A. Blades, was appointed to review the ‘work of the committee during the four years past, and to prepare the same for the General Conference. A discussion arose on the selection of this commit. Wwe, the muuority claiming that they should have a Fs cpaeioleabdipa thereon. This detnand was consid. pe prepiond in @ report which is to be vo the whole Church as the en cong the Book Committee. After maki! ane propriations for the several publica’ ons, an the Salaries of the bemnope. oie whee ts, the Com- mittee bol epigen -a pril accountant’s report will be ready. PACIFIO MAIL INVESTIGATION. Asal st the Officers of the Com- papy—The Complaining Stockholder Falls &o Appear. Tae Legislative Committee appointed to investi- gate the charges preferred against the President ‘and directors of the Pacific Mail Steamship Com- pany assembled yesterday morning at the St. Micholas Hotel. The complainant is a Mr. Newton Layman, a stockholder, who asserted that the mtock of the company had been manipulated to favor private speculation. With a commendable amount of aSaue the commitiee awaited the ap- Besrance of .the stockholder for some time, but as did not present himself an adjournment to the v's office Was decided upon, Shortly after ore o’clock the committee met at the Mice of the Pacitic Mail Steamship Company; but, Before the investigation bee formally resumed, Mr. er, the chairman, desired to give an emphatic contradiction to the statement which appeared in a paper Lo the effect that the commitree had = here and drinking rum on the day pre- in Tee. G. Bellows, Vice President of the company, testified that he came iuto office im November; hé found the financial statement now produced correct; - an were by order of the directors; in Decem- on December 1, they sold $250, 00 government 8, on the Sth $400,000, on the Toth $200,000, iden $100,000, on the 20tn. $96,000, on the nth $100,000, and they secured al! around Tr cent more than they paid. ‘The company intended yullding fron steamers, and the bonds were sold to pay cost. ‘Mr. Stock well and himself considerea they would get g higher price then than if they retained them, and ‘that they were correct was proved by the fact that they could now buy them in three and one-half per cent lower than they sold; did not make loans on Pacific stock at jess than ten per cent; loans were et to Oswell & Chapin on Pacific stock, $700,000 or $800,000; the loans outstanding were, Kenny & @ox, $110,000; Van Vecnten & Co., $450,000; Smith & Co., $232,000; their principal account men the Bank of Commerce; none of the directors po tire yee deposits; know bree} of any Haag to “lock up’? vy calling on loans and deposits. _T! ‘witness denied the statement that in December the company consolidated its currency and deposited it ¢m their safes: he always understood mr, Stockwell to be a Wealihy man; witness knew nothing what- ever about Layman until his name came on the te ied in January for 500 shares, ter some further evidence in reference to the affairs of the company a question rose as to the whereabouts of Layman. The Chairman said that a@carefal inquiry had been made concerning bim in Greenpoint and New York, but that his residence could not be discovered. The counsel for the com. pany stigmatized the affair as a ‘put up job” of “short operators.” Mr, Bellows, in reply to further questions, stated that it was a strange thing that persons who sold stock to Layman should not know anything whatever avout him only so jaras his mame was connected with tne present investiga. The committee adjourned to meet to-morrow merning at the St. Nicholas Hotel. RAID ON THE TENTH AVENUE GANG, For some time past the vicinity of Tenth avenue, from Twentieth strect to Forty-second street, has ween infested by a gang of young raffians who have become a terror to the neighborhood. Scarcely a night passed that some person was not knocked @own and robped. Captain Caffrey, determined to put stop to these depredations, on Friday night d: a bumber of officers in citizens’ clothes.
