AMERICAN GEOGRAPHICAL Annual Meeting—Reports and Election of OM- core=Interesting Address by Professor Gill~ mnn—The Progress Made During the Past Year. ‘The annual meeting of this society was held last evening at the Cooper Institute, for the election of oMicers and to listen to the address of Professor D. C. Gillman, of Yale College, the subject being “American Contributions to Geographical Science During tne last year.” Judge Charles P. Daly, President of the society, occupied the ehatr, There was @ large attendance, including many ladies, while several gentlemen, istinguished in scienufic circles, were also present. ‘The Secretary read the minutes of the last monthly meeting, which were unanimously approved. Mr. F, A, CONKLING, Chairman of the Council, reaa the annual report, which showed the soctety to be io a very prosperous condition. Ten stated meet Inga, eight pubilc meetings and one public recep- tuon had been held. In April last an act was passed by the Legislature changing the name or the society. On the 3ist of December last there were 540 members in the society; forty-four had since been added, and, deducting thirty for deaths ana resignations, tue total! number of members was 654. He alluded to the loss sustainea by the death of Sir Roderick Murchison and Archibald Russell and by the resignation of the Rey. Joseph Thomp- son, " Mr. HENRY CLEws, Treasurer, rean the financial Teport, which set forth that the total receipts for the year were $3,112, and the disbursements, $2,951— lewving @ balance of $130 89, The dues uncollected -were $2,500; dues outstanding, $500—making the resources for the present ycar $3,130 89, Mr, W. Rutner- Jord, G. ©, Ward, The election, which was by bal- lot, was unanimous, Judge DaLy then introduced the speaker of the evening in complimentary terms, Professor GILLMAN said that, at the last meeting of the Society, the attention of the audience was in- viled to a review of the iast decade of geographical researches witnin the territory of the Uniied states, He would now present an account of the geograpni- cal work of Americans during the past twelve months, At first 1t seemed to be a familiar and an easy task, but before he had concluded be was sure they would be impressed with iis variety. the magnitude and the success of the various enterprises which had been in progress under the auspices of American explorers, xeog- Yaphers and men of sclence, and he trusted they would also appreciate the dificuity witch there was in collecting and discussing the results of such investigations. It was only by oco.slonal reviews like the present that they could appreciate the great importance of matntatuing with vigor and liberality in the national metropolis an association With its ofticers, its rooms, its collections, 118 bureau of charts, its library, and, above all, its publications, a8 the centre to which all impor- tant researches and explorations might be re- ported, and to which the enquirer in any special field could turn with the certainty of ascertaining the jatest and jullest information which was acces- sible on the subject of his investigations. No re- cent year had surpassed the one just closed in the amount and value of American geograpnical in- quiry. The various departments of the govern- ment had been prosecuting their work of accurate investigations into the structure of this country with their accustomed diligence, fidelity and freedom from display. Especially to be held in honor were the officers of the corps of engineers and those of the United States Cuast Sur- vey—two departments of the public service whucn, im these days of criticisms and reproach, couid cialin the closest scrutiny and receive the highest commendations, The hydiographic work of those two corps—tue one surveying tne sea coast and the other surveying the lake shores—had /requently re- ceived, abroad and at home, the rich encomiums which they deserved. ‘he Mining Bureau, the Educational Bureau, the Hydrographic Otice, the Post Office Department, the Observatory and the Smithsonian Institution had all maintataed these investigations during the year just closed, but the twelve months was more remarkable tor the completion of the decennial census and the com. mencement of the publication of those statistical tables which were essential to the study of political progress. The year was also noteworutiy for the pertection of arrangements to receive vy telegraph daily reports concerning the weather, 80 complete aud systemauc that they had aireaay thrown great light upon the subject of climate and the laws of storms, aud were des- uned to have more and more Influence upon te promotion of haman comfort aud the protection of ie and property. The general government bad also leat 11s ald to the Volar expedition of Captain Hail; it had caused # rapid reconnoisance to be made of the istund of St. Yomimgo, and it had imstt- tuted a thorough investigaiion lato the fisheries of the coust. Severai of tie States were aiso prose- cuting their geological sarveys, whjch was the common form in these days for the mnanifestauion of loca! interest in natural pace, Someites those surveys were purely gcological, but usnaily toy extended to natural Characteristics, topography, Che Mate, botany aud zovlogy. New Hampsiure, New Jersey, Ohio, Indiana, Iiinols and Calitornia bad been carrying forward their surveys, and one or more Volumes pertinent thereto had been publisi In each of those States. by the enterprise of p vate men of science and by the aid of ar corporations much iunportant knowledge had been accumulated. Chief of iL such Tee searches was the work of the Nortuern Pactic Railroad, in connecuon with wiich several say- veys had been made. The speaker then ailuced to the studies of Professor Dana m respect to the taciers of New England, te inquiry of Profes: tigard ip respect tu toe formation of the Gul Mexico and the Mississ: clia and the essays upon earthquakes and voi Americans were also at work in foreign tauds, mciuding Investigauions in Japan, the Sandwich Islands, Peru, the vat ley of the Amazon, St. Domingo ana the Holy Land. Prolessor Gillman theh, die a at some ih upon the topics Jate ‘wiuch related to the physical structure of the coun- try and the progress of geography under the saver- intendence of Americans. The subject was illus- trated by some very excellent maps. At the conclusion o1 the address, which was listened to with great attention, a vote of thanks was ioved to Professor Gilman, Tne election of officers having been completed, tie meeting adjourned.
