ee FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, | Wau. STREET, SaTuRpay, Jan. 27—6 P. u} On 'Obange to-day wheat was steady and firm. ‘The cotton market was 30. better and quiet. THE COTTON MOVEMENT. ‘The receipts of cotton at all the ports during the past week were 120,813 bales, against 118,887 the previous week, The total receipts since September | 1, 1871, are 1,824,045 bales, against 2,193,213 for the | corresponding period of tne previous year, showing &@ decrease in the present crop of 374,168 bales, The exports from all ports for the week were 81,121 bales, against 105,823 bales for tne same week last ‘year. The total exports for the expired portion of -the cotton year are 986,616 bales, against 1,325,300 bales for the same time last year. The stock at all the porta is 535,606 bales, against 500,612 for the ‘same date in 1871. i THE IMPORTS OF THE WEEK. ‘The imports of the week reached the enormous total of $9,954,455, divided between dry goods— $6,735,456—and general merchandise—$4,218,999. ‘This amount has been seldom-equalled and only “twice or three times surpassed in the history of our foreign trade. THE BANK STATEMENT. The weekly statement of the associated banks is quite unfavorable, owing to @ sharp retrograde | movement in their legal reserve, which shows a -decrease of over a million and a half of dollars, ac- | counted for by the difference between the income and outcome of the Sub-Treasury. The customs of the | ‘week were $3,500,000 and the specie export $550,000, or @ loss to the banks of over $4,000,000, which has been offset to the extent of $1,500,000 only by dis- bursements on account of January interest and re- deemed ’62’s. Fortunately there has been a large return of greenbacks from the interlor—nearly, @ milion—but even with this help the surplus re- serve of the banks 1s impaired to the extent of $1,705,900, and now stands at $9,2.5,725. The state- ment compares with its predecessor as follows:— $280,881, 600 25,228,200 28,288,900 221,074,200 46,328,300 $1;848, 100 2,467,100 82.300 712,700 918,800 Worease in legal tenders MONBY ACTIVE. The money market was quiet in the earlier hours of the day at 546 per cent on governments and at 6a percent on stocks, put became quite active after two o'clock, the closing dealings being at seven per cent currency and seven coin alternately. The wider speculation in gold is offered as an ex- planation of the suddenly increased demand. Prime paper was quoted at 7 a 9 per vent dis- count. Foreign exchange was dull and nominally un- ge yon STRONG—100% A 109%. The operations of the ‘bull clique in the Gold Room were instrumental to-day in advancing the price from 109% to 109%, the speculation enlisting a @ great deai of outside interest, now that it has be- @ayed tts existence. The enormous imports of the past week, the decline in the specie reserve of the banks and a haraer money market in London (such are private advices by cable), readily contributed to the firmer feeling in the market outside the artificial influences referred to, which feem to be applied just at a time when they Qre as felicitous as experimental. The present “bull” clique commenced organizing a couple of weeks ago (as noticed by the HzxALp at the time), when they could not have known that the imports of this week were to be nearly ten millions. Good luck ts often taken for genius. Has there beena commutation of this kind here? The course of the market is shown in the taple:— «+ 109% 12:59 P. M. 109 yy ion 6PM. In the gold loan market the rates for carrying fanged from 3 to 7 per cent. Tho operations of the Gold Exchange Bank were as foliows Gold butane a aeereat. Ourrency balances. 1, The Luropean steamers took out $260,000 in silver. The Sub-Treasury paid out $75,000 on account of January interest, and $30,000 in redemption of the called '62's, $37,550,000 TAR SPECIE MOVEMENT, The exports of specie from this port during the bast week and sipce the beginning of the year have’ been as tollows:— Total for the week. The Gang of Thieves from the Bowery and Hester Street Dive to Have a Ride at the City’s Expense. The twelve murderers, thieves, pickpockets and burglars whom Captain Mount, of the Fourteenth precinct, aprested Friday night m the “Thieves! Resort,” corner of Hester street and the Bowery, were taken before Judge Dowling, at the Tombs Po. Moe Court, yesterday morning. The proprietors of the place, Pat Conroy. and Pat Knapp, were at once committed, in default of adequate bail, but what to do with the remaining ten was a question easier by far to ask than to answer. After a few moments’ CONVERSATION WITH CAPTAIN MOUNT the Judge decided to remand them until nalf-past one o'clock in the afternoon, at which time the Captain promised to have as many of the detective force present as possible, in order that they might identify the gang and make oath to the fact of their being vagrants, thieves and dangerous characters, which proceeding would, of course, enable the Judge to send the whole of them to a place of safety as regards the peaceable and respectable poruion of the community, The prisoners were accordingly taken below and locked up, and at half-past one Detectives peseaberry, Simonton, Tilly, Elder, Heidelberg, Clapp and Eustace were on nand, and spent some minutes in looking over the gang and comparing noves, The prisoners were drawn up IN LINE BEFORE THE DES and Judge Dowling inquired as to whdéther or not any of them were identified. Mr. Elder sata ne recognized two of them. One he had lost sight of for five or six years, but arrested him again about a month since on Broadway for broking Kets. The other he knew by reputation only and by seeing him brought into headquarters repeatediy. JvpGE—Can you swear thut they are vagrants? ELpER—Well, no, I don’t think I can. bave my opinion of them, but I cannot swear that they have nO Means Of support. JupGe—Do any of the other detectives recognize oi the prisoners? ir, Heidelberg stepped forward and said he knew one of them, but that, like Detective Elder, he coulu not swear he was a vagrant. Jupee—Captain Mount’, I think you had better take the prisoners up to Police Headquarters and turn them over to SUPERINTENDENT KELSO. ‘Tell the Snperintendent think he had better apply tothe Commissioners of Charities and Correcuon Jor the use of the “Black Maria,’ and when he ob- tains 1t put all the prisoners into it and drive them to each precinct station houge in the city and snow them up to she entire police and detective torce. In: this way the force will have an opportunity to be- come familiar with their faces, and if they are ever arrested again we will know just what to do with them. In accordance with these instructions the prison- ers were taken charge of Wa the detectives and marched off, and will on Monday, in all probability, be afforded an opportunity to “do” the city at the | Po Cae te a | meat’ ; and others interested in congregational singing, an mon; 73 | will deliver ti aannenana-SBLIGIOUS NOTIOES, LL SAINTS’ FREE CHU!
