FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Saronpay, Jan 287M} ‘On 'Change to-day wheat was heavy and dull, market held its recent improvement, but barely steady. ‘THE COTTON MOVEMENT, ‘The receipts of cotton at all the ports during the ‘past woek were 113,887 bales, against 94,595 the pre- ‘vious week. The total receipts since September 1, 1871, are 1,703,000 bales, against 2,048,024 for the cor- Tesponding period of the previous year, showing a Gecrease in the present crop of 345,024 bales. Tne ‘exports trom all ports for the week were 87,666 ‘Dales, against 119,349 bales for the same week last year, Tne total exports for the expired portion of ‘the cotton year are 909,497 bales, against 1,219,548 bales for the same time last year. The stock at all the ports 1s 611,226 bales, agaist 546,476 for the Bame date in 1871, THE BANK STATEMENT. ‘The weekly statement of the associated banks re- flects the continued flow of currency wo this centre, ‘the deposits having increased about five and a half Millions, of which it is tair to presume at least four millions were paper money shipped from the in- terior, the amount of legal tenders being specified in an average of nearly two millions. There is a Bmall decrease in specie, resulting from the con- tinued heavy demand for customs payments. ‘The loans show an expansion of nearly four Millions, owing doubtless to the readiness of the Danks to lend out tne national bank notes with which they were so plentifully supplied during the ‘week. The proportion of reserve to lMabilities re- Mains without important variation. Prices have advanced and many qualities are largely oversold. Bleached sheetings and sbirtings are active, with some tickets largely advanced, Lonsdale 4-4 being marked at 18 cents. Satteens and corset jeans share the activity of other cottons, and the large demand and scarcity of stock have caused an advance, Naumkeag is marked at 163,¢., Pequot at 15°., Kearsarge brown at 16};c., do. slate and bleached at 16c. Rotled Jaconets are tn good demand, and have advauced to 12c, in all makes. Jobbers find trou- bie in getting goods to supply their large orders. Prints are noc fairly opened, only a fair business having been done in medium work. Prices depend upon the price of printing cloths, and these, marked now at sc., might compel a@ change in prints if ad- vanced; 11 }<c. Is the price at preseut of most of the lea acing’ tickets. Ginghams o1 the Lancaster ticket have been cut down to 13c., Which created quite a in the mar- ket. WOOLLEN Goops, Beavers move slowly un account of the advance of the first of the year, Doeskins are moderately active and have ad- vanced slightly, thougu not at all in proporuon to cost of production, ‘The lower qualities are scarce and in demand. Fancy cassimeres have moved quite freely, though buyers are not as picnty as last week. There 1s hope of better prices, and considerable firmness has been maintained. In light weights the stock of low and medium qualities is getting reduced, FOREIGN DRY GOODS. Alpacas and mohairs have advanced with the ad- vance of raw material in Europe, and the cheaper »Btyles, 80-called, are notin market. The demand for spring wear "1s nob diminished, notwithstanding the increase of domestic mauufacture. The present advance of home products is not in proportion with the foreign, as the former have aiready been ad- vanced to meet the stapie. Ttalian cloths ays @ much Nigher figure and are taken with caution by clotnters, Linens are ac' ve und higher prices will, doubt- less, prevail. Dress goods are expected to increase in firmness. Shawis, especially Thivets, are Jargely advanced in Europe and will sympatuize nere, Biack silk are nut expected to show much differ- ence, but fancy silk will ve he neg higher, owing to increased cost and demand. “MARRIAGES AND DEATHS, Married.
