Grioell, Collector*of the Port.—This was an ac- tion brought to recover from Moses H,. Grin- gel, as Collector of the Port of New York, un aileget excess of duty paid on a quantity of imported sugar. The facts appear tobe these: ‘fhe plainudy imported on the 1st of August, 1869, 443. hogsneads and twenty-nine barrels of sugar, and entered them ut the Custom House on the 2d of August, and on the LOth ol the same Month the goods were placed 1p bonded warehouse. Tho Furman Street tragedy—Galvia Sent to State Prison, Before Judge McCue. The second triai of Daniel B. Galvin, indicted for the murder of Michael Campbell, in Furman street, in July last, was concluded yesterday afternoon. Afier the opening of tue Vourt yesterday morning, allthe evidence having been heard, Mr. Spencer proceeded to sum up the case on behalf of the pris- oner, and argued that there was no premeditation ‘on the part of Galvin, or any evidence that the men ‘were enemies. fae deed was committed in a sna- den frenzy, to which the prisoner had been goaded on by dec-ased. District Attorney Britton summed up for the peo- pie, stating that if the jury velleved the prisoner Qid not intend to Kill Campbell, but was in the heat of passion from adequate cause, he was gulity of mansiaughter in the third degree. Aiter a comprehensive charge by Judge McUue the jury retired, and, at hali-past four o'clock, re- turned with a verdict convicting the prisoner of manslaughter in the third degree, The Court thereupon sentenced Galvin to the State Prison tor three years and six months. Harvest on tho Hudson—The Ice Companics All Replenishing Their Stores—Strike of the Kuickerbecker Hands for 82 a Day=—The Company Decides to Pay It. POUGHKEEPSIE, Jan, 16, 1872, It fs a noteworthy fact that the tee harvest on the Hudson commences unusually late this season, though at present the greatest activity 1s observed everywhere. Here the ice is about nine inches thick, but work has not yet been entered into, At Hyde Park the Muinal Benefit Company have a house capable of holding 800 tons, in which no ice has yet been placed. At Staatsburg the Knicker- bocker Company have eigut houses, with a capacity of 30,000 tons, and the Mutual three houses, with acapacity of 12,000 tons, The ice there is from seven to eight inches thick. This week the Knick- erbocker Company will put on 100 men and tne Mutuals eighty. There 1s some ice cutting progress- ing at Rninebeck, but not much near Tivoli, At Turkey Point the Knickerbocker Company have a house holding 30,000 tons and another at Eves Nort holding 25,000 tons. There is a hurrying to get men to fill them, but javorers will not work on the ice for $175 per day. At Germantown, a little furtner north, the ice is only six and a hatt inches thick, The ice bh. uses near there are located on the west side of the river. One is owned by the Consumers’ Ice Company and holds 70,000 tons, There are already four rooms full, they having been left over from last winter. Another house near by 1s owned by the New Jersey Ice Company, and hoids 45,000 tons, They have not yetcommenced work there, On Catskill Creek the Newark Ice Company have one house fliled with 26,000 tons of thick ice, H. Van Steenburgh has also one house on the creek filled with 1,600 tons of ten-inch ice. He is building another of the same capacity, and will have it filled by the 1st of February. The New York Company have one house on the creek filed with 6,000 tons of ten-ineh Ice, They have also one house on Catskill Point, which hoids 40,000 tons, empty, and ono house at Hamburg, @ mile further north, which holds 25,000 tons, and which is also empty. They will go to work on ten-iuch ice on the river to-mor- row. The Washington Ice Company, at Rogers’ Istand, 1s working on eight and a half to nine aud a half-inch tce, ‘iheir house contains 4,000 tous left over from last winter, and they have already housed 4,600 tons this winter.
