F., Jan. —, 187% The murder of the old man Garret Sears and his fister, Mrs, Gehan, by the husband of tne latter, FtLlI continues to create universal horror among the law-abiding people of Newfoundland, Many weoks hadypassed since the boay of Mrs, Gehan was found ‘on the old Spaniard’s Bay Road, and the crime was still shrouded in mystery. Then, as the HeRatd has prowptly published, the body of the missing man, Sears, was discovered by tne Chief of Police in a heap of ordure near the murderer's house, and then suspicion was fixed on Geban and HIS GUILTY PARAMOUK, Johannah Hamiiton, who were duly arrested, Gehan strongly asserted his innocence and was uphela in his protestations by his accomplice. On the ground of inaisputabie ciréimstantial evidence the mur derer and Johanaah Hamilton were conveyed from Harbor Grace in charge of the Chief of Police tothe Penitentiary at St. John’s, There the terrors of prison iife extracted from the girl Hamilton a full confession of the murders committed by, the hanas of Parick Gehan, and fully witnessea and conuived at by herself. Ske said that on the morn- ing of the 20th of November, Garrett Sears, Pat- Tick Genan, Mrs, Genan and witness sat together at breakfast In Gehan’s house, During tie meal Ge- han petrayed ‘an uncommon suriiness of dispost- « ton, and seemed disposed to avail bimsell of the least opportunity to vent nis passion on somebody, Alter patiently listenlng to many untoward remarks passed by.Gehan, the old man, Sears, at last under- ‘ook to feprimand him. Gehan then left the room, and shortly returned with a pistol, which, without Uttering @ word, he aimed aud fired at old Sears, Inflictiug A MONTAL WOUND in the bram. Old Sears fell backward, exclaiming, “Holy Saviour,-have merey on me! While pros- traieon the floor, and gasping and moaning tp his death throes, the old man received emht or ten violent plows of a mattock, which Genan seized in order to despaten his victim. These blows occa- #ioned the revolting appearance of THE MURDERED MAN'S SKULL, which was recently described by your corre. spondent. Inthe meantime Gehan’s wife had fed to her bedroom, where she fell Into aswoon, Aiter the completion of his first bloouy work, the mur- derer toliowed her into the bedroom, and before ghe had recovered from her fit, he removed a Teaiber bea and ihrew it over her, pressiug upon tt ligutiy inorder TO SMOTHER HER. In consequence of the woman's sudden illness \sulfocation was not long delayed. Fearimg that sho might again breathe, the murderer gave her a heavy biow with the mattock on the back of the akuil. In the dead of nurht the mangled corpse of old Sears was carded to the manure heap and buried there. The witness, Johanneh Uamilton, fss.sted tu this work, ‘then Geaan proposed to bring the corpse of his wile “away up the span. ¢ lard’s Say.road,” and seave 11 there, so that people Might sav that some accident hac velalien her, The body of Mrs. Gehan was accordmyly borne to a lone- Bome spot on the Spamard’s Bay road, and there disposed Of successfully, a3 the murderers hoped. ‘This part.of ‘THE GIRLS CONFRSZION ‘exactly coincides win detective Foley's first, theory, that the womay Must nave been killed in Gehau’s house, ior seyerai rgasons, viz. he clones upon the woman's compse Were of @ fashion ta which no ‘woman Would be found: at that distance from her house; Gouliy, that tue Spanisn Bay road oad been udiy for many days, and the boots upon the dead omen teev were periectly iree jrom any sou, and the soies had that pecuiar gloss acquired oy Wieh have nov been used oulsiae of dours tor a considerable umes ‘Ihe above tsa substantial synopsis of Johannat Hamuton’s confession.
